This is a subject which has fascinated me for quite a while. I have always longed for a website which would provide a true 3D experience e.g a world to explore and navigate in. I've always had a soft spot for VRML but the inability to stream data and the reuirement of a plugin has always put people off. Even though there are some really nice 3D viewers out there ( Octaga to name one ) they force your visitors to download something that they've never heard of.

Director is an option... if you have the money anyway, but it's not very popular. VRML and even X3D have more homes on the web than shockwave. So the question is, what are the options ? What is the best way, if any, to create a rich 3D experince on the web ?

view point media labs have run off with the ball (3d).
major car sites use this 3d plugin nowadays.

http://www.viewpoint.com/technologies/viewpoint-media-player-3d.shtml

they have modified there site since i was there last.

check out the video cube once you get it running.

Director would be one of the better options due to its flexibility, and quite a few of the bigger 3d packages work well with it. I havent really seen much else that does 3D online (there's a noticeable lack), so I'm wondering if there's a reason for that?

I tend to follow what professional websites use and it appears view point have taken the lead.

Nope, looks ok-ish. Java 3d only works well when using jogl, which is a java wrapper for opengl, or for Java3D on supporting mobile phones. On PC's its just clunky, and not really worth much

I used blaxxun for about 2 years when I played an online web based game. They offer game building tools and alsorts, but its not cheap.

3D web stuff is fairly pointless TBH. I mean, why bother making simple 2d sites into navigating hell by adding a useless dose of 3d? There is absolutely no sense in it
