To repair a "problem solved" fault, take hammer, and apply to motherboard vigerously.

I installed Steam because I was actually considering buying the Valve SDKs and games. Then Valve, or someone tried to reach back into my computer last night while I was offline and my firewall stopped it.

I usually allow access from my machine forward, but...not the other way 'round. That is not allowed on my system!

I solved my problem by uninstalling Steam.

Doubt it was steam. they wouldn't be allowed to publish games that use it, otherwise it might have been someone using the same port/connection as steam does tho
