First official Devhat competition!

As you all are aware our website lacks, erm everything, but things are moving in such a way that, there will be a website soon. Small snag, we're pants at designing a look. (Hey, at least we're honest!)

So this is where this competition comes into play, come up with a winning design and win cash! (PayPal for non-UK members, bank transfer for UK people with bank accounts). Not only that, you will be credited for your work on the website, with a link to your website if you so wish.

The prize is $40 dollars (~£21GBP)

For the rules please visit:
http://www.devhat.org/forums/index.php?topic=132
if you cant access that forum, you need to register.

if you don't know what DevHat is, I'll explain quickly.

Devhat is the network where the #darkbasic channel resides on. we have a active #lobby room, where there is regular talk about everything!

if you have a irc client here are the info you need:
server: irc.devhat.net
port: default (6667)
rooms: #darkbasic or #lobby (if you feel bored grab the channel list by doing "/list")

if you wish to use the Java applet on this website it's:
http://www.thegamecreators.com/?gf=irc

we hope you enjoy the chat there and the competition we offer!

On a side note, there are a number of community projects going on on Devhat, one is DIM (Devhat Instant Messenger), an open protocol that is being developed so people can write their own servers and clients. There's also discussion going on for a different community project, with ideas ranging from games, to compilers and quite a lot in-between.
The website itself is also a community project lead by me, an open-source PHP CMS system is currently being developed to act as a backend for the site, and it will be made available for public use. The website itself will have an articles and tutorials system, and possibly things like developer blogs and project pages, depending on what people would like to see.

Heh, from this thread, you'd be right in thinking we're complete nutters. But intelligent discussion does happen!

If webdesign aint your thing, I will plug DIM, which as Kentaree mentioned is DevHat Instant Messenger, our IM Protocol, which is entering it's second phase (Phase 2 or P2) of development. Discussion is going on about the additions to our (currently basic, but extendable) protocol over on the forums if you're interested in getting involved, and there's more information about DIM, our current protocol, and even descriptions/screenshots of the clients some of us have made:

Link To Wiki (Forgive the TinyUrl, Apollo is playing about with the URL.)

This all seems like another of those "Join our new forums and community" posts, but I assure you it isn't, DevHat has evolved from other networks over a number of years and began as a network of TGC Coders.

lol i just asked a friend of mine who does webdesign, he's being a right moody @rse about it.

"OMG THEY ASKING £20 FOR A WEBSITE!!!!"

even though i tell him its just the design, he responds yelling even more saying how most of the time and effort all goes into the design, not the code, so it makes no difference >.>

LOL, tell him I worked as a webdeveloper for a while, and that that's total and utter bullcrap, and if it takes him that long, that he should ask himself some questions

It's uhm... different. Would make for some very awkward navigation and no real scalability

Only entry so far though ^_^

Yeah, we're extending the competition until the new year because of the lack of entries, so there's still time!

you could buy a professional looking template for most CMS based options with that cash.

Probably, but we're looking for something unique tbh. That and, be honest, this thread is nearly a month old and still at the top of the board, it's good publicity

Is it just an image template we are making, or a fully coded site layout?

Just an image template. I prefer to code it up myself as I want to be able to easily modify it and make code it according to XHTML standard

I'm gonna say this as a member of the community rather than an oper:

I'm afraid to say respect is a major part of life. The channel moderators and opers are here to help - just like the moderators on this forum, your teachers and your parents. These people (with the exception of your teachers) don't get paid to do what they do, they do it anyway, and when we have you acting all teenage and exclaiming how you "don't need us", and insulting some of our regular users (users even greatly respected on here!) you can see how the community as a whole can get annoyed.

Without respect, online communities would fall into disarray and people wouldn't care for the rules. Furthermore it would be a sucky place to be - I know I don't want to be in a place where people are constantly making sly digs at me.

It's nothing personal. If someone else was acting the same way towards you or any other person, I'd of posted the same reply.

we've tried contacting you via email but the email address you provided with nickserv isn't valid.

your conduct on the network lately has been unacceptable to say the least and we've had numerous complaints about you. we've even had to try to get the regulars to loosen their view of you being a "noob" on there. that has succeeded in a way, more people are chatty to you, I'm sure you've noticed that.

respect isn't the issue really, it's sometimes your attitude towards things/users.

rooms and nicknames have a 90 day expiry so you don't have to worry. your ban is only for 7 days (6 days left)

if you have an issue you wish to take further pm me on the devhat forum, it's what it's there for. this forum isnt the place to say "why am i banned"

anyway back to the thread topic!
