Ok, i've been trying to record a video of my Nvidia Competition game lately...

I downloaded fraps (free limited version) and recorded a 30 second video. every time i tried to open it though it crashed windows explorer! (i even tried recording a less than 30 second video to see if the cutting off was doing it)

anyway, i thought it had to be fraps fault so i tried two other screen recording programs (HyperCam and "Quick Screen Recorder") but both of those had the same problem with the AVIs they produced!

so... is there just some codec or something i need to download to fix my windows? or even better is there a screen capture program that doesn't save to AVI

Thanks,
--Peter

It does sound like a codec issue.

If you download virtual dub, from memory it has a file analyser to tell you about the file format thats being created.

another two gems are a program called SUPER for video conversion and FFMPEG.

ah, thank you. "Super" converts the AVIs into another format nicely (and the new files don't crash explorer lol)

There's a code snippet and plugin for making your own AVI's. It's slower than Fraps, but not really, because you can record at whatever FPS you like, and then you just play your demo grabbing each frame and adding it to the avi. If your PC can handle it then it should be pretty smooth, plus playing in slow mo means you can make people think your leet, exact aiming and stuff like that made easy by slow mo.
