http://www.zune.net/en-US/default.htm

Ok, yes the Zune is for the most part microsoft's version of the ipod, but it actually looks like a great (and possibly better) alternative to the ipod.

I don't exactly like Microsoft, but I severly dislike Mac, so there's no question that I'm against ipods... Not Macs fault, it's the local school systems fault for exposing me to the aweful mac os's of old before osx was released. But honestly Zune seems pretty cool. I'm not just saying that because I'm against Macs.

What do other people think? Is this worth a look? Any reason not to (aside from hating microsoft)? Check the link to look at some of the features (they're in there somewhere).

EDIT: Is this really flamebait? I guess I worded the title wrong... I didn't spend much time posting this, so I've gone back to make it sound less like I'm trying to start a flame war, as I have no intention to. I guess I should have made the title something like "Has anyone seen Zune?"

99.99% of the time, people who hate stuff, usually dont have an opinion why they do.
It stems from the us vs them approach in life, very immature.

Ill quote the green guy

Quote: "
Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering
"

People who also post hate posts, usually are wasting their time and dont even know it.
I feel sorry for you firstly wasting your own time with nonsense like this and for people around you who have to put up with your silly ways.

Ahhhhhh Microsoft's new born baby.

Well all I can really say is that the best feature is the wireless connectivity with other Zune players. You can send music and videos to other people who are in range. Nice feature, but not totally needed.

No? Strange.

Quote: "99.99% of the time, people who hate stuff, usually dont have an opinion why they do."

I hate Mac because I've had the worst expieriences with them in school enviorments. Also, I've known far too many people who have had their ipod's destoryed without them ever doing anything to them. I agknowlage that Macs isn't bad overall (and the osx is a pretty good operating system), I'm just predesposed to hating them. I'm not trying to get other people to hate them. I just can't help it.

I actualy had no clue what zune was until tonight. I'm asking what people think because I'm looking at mp3 players that aren't ipods, and this seems to be a very good alternative. I didn't intend to be posting flamebait...

I'll edit the post so it doesn't look like I'm ipod bashing (I didn't mean to...)

And I hope I didn't sound pro-microsoft. I'm not, I'm sort of nutral with them. I don't see a good reason (for me) not to run windows yet, and as my parents are microsoft partners, I've gotten tons of free stuff from them and it makes no sense not to use it. I just thought Zune looked really nice, and was surprised no one had posted it, so I did.

The connectivity feature looks pretty cool. Not nessasary, but very useful. Also looks like a great way to send viruses if it's automatic. But with the right protection (or the ability to add protection), it should be a very nice feature.

When I first heard about this I just laughed. Not because I think its a terrible product, its just funny that Microsoft is going to try and compete with the iPod. iPod is just way too established in culture now to introduce something new. There are people that I know that wouldn't even know that the Zune was in competition with the iPod because they don't really know what an iPod is. They know it plays music, but they don't understand its an MP3 player. So when you say Zune or MP3 player they go "Huh?". Then you say iPod, and they go "Ooooh".

Either way or I don't care for either. I've never desperately needed to listen to music that bad enough to carry around something as portable as an MP3 player.

Well, this definitely wasn't meant to be an us vs them thread. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the ipod at all.

And, ipods come in black as well, I'd be surprised if there wasn't just a free upgrade to make it run on the new os, has the sharing feature, and I don't see how they're ugly. It's as simplistic as an ipod, and really looks just as nice with a much larger screen. That's not the issue.
Krilik makes a much more valid point, that it's a bit late to try and compete with ipod, but also, there are more music players than ipods, it's not like we have only one or two choices. But yes, it's unlikely Zune will trump the ipod. And I as well wasn't considering any mp3 player until recently, but I've finally put together a list of songs I really like. And it's about 150 songs larger than I could recall off hand. I figure I need to get one at some point, so I'm looking right now. I doubt I'll be getting anything for quite a while.

Quote: "2. Windows can be a very slow computer. That's why I like iPods better. They run with mac's. And mac's are faster"

I'm sorry, but wtf??? ipod uses itunes, which works on any comp. And windows is not a comp, it's an os, and itunes definitely runs on windows. And my 4.5 yr old laptop runs xp, and is about 10 times faster than my schools brand new e-macs were. Yes, they were definitely not top of the line macs, I'm just saying think about what you post.

oh yes,
Quote: "We already have the iPod. People I think like them more than theses."

We also already have iriver, zen, psp, chocolate, and an untold number of other mp3 players. The ipod is the most popular, and its incredibly unlikely that ANY other mp3 player will trump it in sales any time soon.

But I'm not looking to bash the ipod, or defend zune from people like AlanC...

I dunno. I'm tired. I wont be surprised if I read this later and have no clue what I'm trying to say in the last bit.

Edit: yup. I was right. That's not what I ment at all. So therefore, I've put it in code

The more I think about it, the more I'm planning on selling my iriver H10 20GB and getting a zune...I'd like something with a good sized screen to play movies on.

Saw a zune for £144 + £20 P+P to england on ebay.co.uk....

There's no tangible reason for anyone owning an iPod to buy a Zune. I think the only area Zune will compete is in the 'other mp3 player' market (against Creative, etc). The connectivity between the Zune and MCE or the 360 will help too, but not enough to draw even the slightest mindshare away from Apple.

I don't own an iPod because I don't commute anywhere, and who the hell needs an mp3 player in their own 5.1 Dolby wired house But if I did commute, I'd buy an iPod first so I can sync it with my PC and Mac, and I use iTunes on both of those and love it. MSN Music just doesn't compare yet, until MS make it as easy as Apple to actually buy the tracks, this will be a non-event.

Jump forward 2 years time however and things will be different.

To be honest, with most phones nowadays being able to play music, what's the point in having multiple devices do the same thing? You can expand most phones with memory card, and with sim cards with 1GB memory being brought out for phones without expansion, why bother having 2 devices.
I know a lot of people have Gigs of music, but how much can you really listen to?

Personally I hate Windows, I've had aweful experience with it, hence I want a Mac, but in reality, theres no reason to have the grudge against them, if I felt I'd benefit from a 360, I'd get one, but not stick my nose up at it, same for the Zune, but all of my music is in itunes format, so I'd have an ipod, although having a terrible Windows experience, my new computer may be windows again, but so what, Windows doesn't good things, with your experience being Pre Mac OS X I'd take an open mind to it, because Mac OS X is a massive improvement and IMO much better than Windows. Just because you have a bad experience doesn't mean you need to hate

Arrgh... No duh if your iPod breaks no more music. But if the phone part of your phone breaks then your left without a cellphone AND a music player, so it ends up being a double whammey. If you have seperate devices though, then you don't end up with them both gone.

And about the car thing. Ya if your radio breaks you can get it replaced, but in the meantime you can take a taxi to where you need to go. You only lose one necessity and its easily replaced. I doubt there's a service that will let you borrow a cellphone that will have all your music and all the addresses that were on your broken cellphone.

If that didn't come out to clear sorry. I'm kinda tired.

Even if the phone broke, unless you fry your memory card how would you loose all your music and phone numbers? I know for sure that mine are stored on the memory stick in my Nokia and not on the phone itself. Also if I ever lost my phone, I can walk into any Orange store with a new phone and download all my contacts onto it again. The music would be lost though, granted, but no more so than if I lost an iPod

Well, the way I see it people either have £150 to spend on an iPod, or they go buy some cheap MP3 player.

In reality, iPods are nice players, but absolutely god awful value for money. You can spend £50 and get a 40gb MP3/Movie player with a 3'' screen. iPods are not exactly indestructable, first generation iPods were really dodgy, and even now there's a big refurbishment industry behind them. So I tend to go for cheap players, because if I drop it down the toilet then it wont cost me a months rent!. I tend to use them when on my bike, or when shopping - there's nothing better than an MP3 player to drown out the pain of ASDA's.

I mean, even these cheap iPod's, a 2gb iPod is about £70, a 2gb MP3 player costs about £25 these days. The main benefit is the rechargableness, batteries are a real pain - yes even rechargable batteries are a pain.

So the only thing I and a lot of people will care about is £££ - how much is it and how many albums can it store?.

hehe. I always thought MACs were silly back in the day with their one button mouse. I assume they have more buttons now. It was always strange to me, to assume an interface would be simpler with a single mouse button, because of course i'm incapable of learning to use two of my fingers.

iPods are good and they do the job, but their popularity is still 95% due to marketting. I prefer players by iRiver and companies like Archos who've been in the game a lot longer. It's all down to personal taste, but I've always thought iPods looked tacky, cheap, especially the initial hospital white design. And the lines look like the sort of thing you would've vacume-formed in technology class at school. In contrast, my iRiver looks spot on, with metal parts, good build quality, and it's about 5 years old now.

Each to their own. I like the clean sharp looks of my 60gb 5G iPod, and I like the looks of my tiny metal Sony walkman player (plastic Walkman phone also look pretty good). A friend of mine had an iRiver and it was very good, but it totally looked like a brick to me. Like a very solid, square, totally brain you, brick.

40Gb player with 3" (colour?) screen for £50? In the UK? From a store (or Web will be fine)? And not Ebay (doesn't really count, much like backs of lorries...).

Cheers

You can run Mac OS on a PC too...

Also,

Quote: "The New macs are faster than ANY windows computer hands down"

Eh?

How can you possibly say that??

I could make a new PC with a liquid nitrogen cooled CPU overclocked to 10GHz, and put two SLIed 8880s in it, then install windows on it, and I'm pretty sure it would be faster than the Mac.

Then of course you could go build a Mac with 100 10Ghz processors in etc. etc.

You can't match off computers like it. It just doesn't work.

Look I have worked with macs, I like them, I would not buy one because I feel they are overpriced for what you get. If I were really into video or music editing MAC is the way to go. Personally I like games thus I choose a PC because for the same price as a Mac I get get a much better machine for gaming.

AlanC. Shut up. Don't turn a music player discussion into a flame war about Mac vs. PC.

Read my posts and you'll notice I put A LOT of thought into what I post. If I don't think I've put enough thought into them, I actually go back and edit them.

And why do you think Microsoft charges you for a lot of things? I don't pay them for anything but OS's and games (oh yes, and office). IN every case they have every right to charge us for them. And furthermore, why do you think I wouldn't know anything about Macs? I use them daily. As I said, my unyielding dislike has little to do with the current Mac os.

No.

Don't.
You're flaming something that doesn't matter, especially as we're talking about music players and not comps. So stop. We don't care.

That's not a strong argument, I think Macs are awesome, I can see where you're coming from, because Macs don't have that crap you can get with Windows to slow down, you say a Mac is faster than any PC, well not really, I found a website with a PC twice as powerful as a top spec Mac, but not as reliable. Its only because Windows does pick up a lot more crap and Microsoft love using ram that Windows as an OS doesn't perform as well as a Mac, from looking at Vista they haven't change their way, but the only way one is the superior is for the user, its very much like saying Maya is better than 3D Studio Max, but is it?

Like any other device of this nature, I'm going to wait until I know a few people who have it so I can give it a little look. I don't have an ipod because I think they're too expensive for what they actually do, it seems people just buy it for it's name although I do admit, they do the job very well and look nice.

I use my phone as an mp3 player anyway, got a 512mb memory card in it, and considering I don't often go on journeys longer than about 4 hours, it serves nicely as a little media player.

Well, I'ma keep this on topic...

How is the software that goes with this? I don't like iTunes very much. On my brother's comptuer it always takes files from my computer and puts them on his ipod. I also don't like all the restrictions it places and everything. Just seems real shady to me...

Yo Alan, I just went back and did notice Bizar was indeed the first to mention macs vs pc (sorry Bizar) I'll go ahead and edit that post.

Personally, I like windows better because that's what I've always had and have been accustomed to using. I've used a mac and it worked just as well, froze just as much. I really have no hate for macs. I just know my XPS laptop can beat the snot out of all my friends' imacs

The zune seems nice, but from what I heard its got some serious DRM problems. The only way I'd buy a zune over an ipod is if it could offere me something else, rather than be another clone. I think it has FM radio support, yes? If so, that's a start. A lower price would also help.

Factors I'd consider before buying any mp3 player:

- Price
- Storage
- Reliability
- Functionality/Usability
- Battery life

Are their any MP3 players that support ogg? I could care less about WMA, who uses WMA anyway?

I actually went with neither and bought a 20Gig Zen "Sleek Photo" for $160 a few months ago.

features it has that pwn ipod.
The ability to listen to and record FM radio (when i was in India i recorded some of their radio lol... though i could only find one weak station)
Very good value, a similarly priced ipod and you get maybe 2-4 or 8 gigs.

features that ipod has that it doesn't
games
large mod community

If i didn't care about value for your money i probably would have got a ipod, but if you're on a budget, it's a good deal.

Not too sure on the Zune. I'm not too keen on the design and I'd definately let other people give feedback on it for a good few months before even thinking about buying one. Having said that, I wouldn't buy an ipod either.

It would appear I've been bitten by the coding bug yet again...
