I've spoken to about fourteen people so far, six of whom were from my myspace friends list, who got a PS3 and are loving the crap out of it. In fact, if you did get a PS3 steve, then you're the only person I've heard from thus far that's complaining about it.
The best/ happiest story I've heard so far (break out the tissues, this is a tear-jerker!): A guy I know has been sick for the past few weeks with bronchitis, and was devastated that he couldn't get the PS3 and wait in line for it with his friends. His girlfriend was supposed to go visit her parents in Argentina, and told him she was going... but instead of boarding a flight back to her native land, she boarded her Camry, drove up to Best Buy in Syracuse to visit her sister, and together the two of them waited in line for two days so she could get a PS3 for her sick boyfriend... which she was able to do for him. The best part: today is his birthday. So thanks to her, he's laying around in bed sick with a brand-new PS3 and a handful of games to help him recover quicker.
THAT IS LOVE people! If I were sick and wanted a PS3, would my girlfriend wait in line for two days to get me one? Maybe, but I'd probably have to beg her lol.
I think the shootings, robberies, riots, and maulings over the PS3 have something to do with the holiday season. Also, of the three consoles, the PS3 is without question the console that people [the general public] are the most excited about. Maybe not people on this forum (did I just say "maybe?" I meant "definitely"), but most places aren't seeing lines queueing up for the Wii just yet, only hours away from launch, possibly because Nintendo, with all of the positive hype the Wii has recieved, still hasn't gotten the public over the idea that the Wii is another casual party-gaming console like the gamecube. In Manhattan I've heard that there's a few lines sprouting up, and a friend of mine in LA said there's about fifty people outside a wal-mart store there, but it looks like the PS3 had the most gargantuan lines, the 360 had huge lines almost as long but not quite as monsterous, and the Wii is off to a somewhat slow start in the "public anticipation department." I'm sure I'll be crucified for saying that on this blatently Wii-supporting forum, but after a tour of Google with the search phrases "wii lines," wii launch," and "wii launch lines," I'm not turning anything up that would support people waiting in lines for the Wii. But to the Wii's credit, I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with the fact that the Wii isn't expecting shortages like the 360 and PS3 have had.
