I've just recently stated having this problem with my screen where I have 5 bars, made up of around 20 yellow lines each, going across my monitors. (See screen shot). I've looked and I'm not ready to say it's a hardware failure, because I REALLY don't feel like replacing a Radeon 9800 for what might turn out to be no good reason.

Anybody else had this problem? Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks,

It looks like a video card driver issue, but its hard to tell from here.
if your not sure, try a diagnostic program that determines what might be faulty.

It kinda looks video related.
shut down the machine, re slot the video card in case its a little wonky.
visit the manufacturers site and re install the drivers or update the drivers or roll back the drivers.

did you remove the older drivers or just upgrade over the top?

is it happening on two monitors?
are you only using one?
what port are you using?VGA DVI etc..

what motherboard do you have?

I have a 9800 in this machine but for OSX

my current usage

this forum link has some other basics you should try.

is the monitor a crt or an lcd?
if its a crt the monitor could be going. Have you tried a different monitor? If the problem goes away then it isnt the card or the drivers

I have dual CRT monitors, one off a Dell 2350, the other off a Gateway from 1998. In short, both ancient. But would print screen catch the lines if it was a monitor problem?

I opened the thing up a week ago.

I use both monitors half the time I use the computer, which is pretty much every day. Sometimes it happens on both monitors, other times only on the primary one.

My motherboards an Abit AS8-V that's gone wonky and been replaced with a new one 3 times now.

If Print Screen catches the lines it's definitly NOT a monitor problem, and most likely a video card problem.
You could try (as indi said) updating the video card drivers. If it doesn't work or if you don't want to mess with the settings yet, you could try experimenting with Linux to see if it still messes up (if it does, its either your mother board or the video card, hard to find out which without swapping parts).

Got it, it was a monitor problem. Kind of strange that print screen would catch it. It was because I had the two CRT monitors plugged into a six-plug powerstrip, apparently. I had been using a four-plug one, but changed it to a six plug one. Apparently that was dividing it up a little to thin.

You sure it wasn't the GFX card fan not getting enough power, then switching to a 4 port powerstrip sorted that?

Really, there's no way a power issue in a monitor would be capturable on your PC.

had I read that clearly the first time, and knowing that its sporadic between the two, I would not have suggested a monitor issue. But if youre saying its a power issue then ok. Hope you got it sorted

Well, I dunno. I've still got the CPU case plugged into the six-plug power strip, I just plugged the monitors into another outlet. So either the monitors were draining power from the CPU case, or it was the monitors. Still kind of odd print screen would get it.

hate to add to the possibilities/mystery but: Is that outlet on a different circuit?

2 different outlets don't usually mean 2 different circuits, especially if both outlets are in the same room. Unless, of course, one is a regular outlet and the other an appliance outlet (like for an air conditioner)

what I am getting at is, by changing the outlet, and seeing the prob go away, if the new outlet is on the same circuit, nothing has really changed regarding power-draw on that circuit. The move away from the same strip might have something to do with it however.

I like a good mystery now and again

Ahh, no. I came back. It is a graphics card problem, now I'm sure: I took the cover off the CPU and they disappeared, Obviously, the card's too hot.
