If you've ever used Opera while trying to browse the forums, you've probably noticed that the code tags don't look right at all and they're completely unreadable. That's because the style for the code tags is: font-family: Terminal,Courier,Arial;

Here's what Opera users see:
LOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOLLOLOLOL

Terminal isn't a TrueType font, as in it can't be found in your WindowsFonts folder. It's rendered on the fly, I believe, by Windows, but because it isn't TrueType most browsers don't even support it. The problem with Opera is that at 12pt for some reason, it displays TrueType like crap. I'm pretty sure it's an Opera bug and I've posted it on the tech support forums, because it displays fine in IE (although I'm not sure if it's actually using the Terminal font). I think that you should remove the Terminal font family from the <pre tag you use in the code snippet box, however, because it's not a font that all browsers recognize and can create display issues for some users, like in this case. Has anyone else noticed this?

cant you just change your default font in your browser under [Fonts and colors], is this website forcing it?

You can't overwrite webpage fonts with Opera. You can tell Opera what font you want it to use if no font is specificed, otherwise Opera will listen to the webpage.

I get that problem whenever I use FireFox or Mozilla too.
Have no idea why it seems to affect me on the what, 25 odd computer I've used with Gecko-based browsers over the last 2years but doesn't appear to affect Rich.. have asked him to correct the issue in the past (esp. given it's a couple min job) but no joy.

Given Rich has added the "Get FireFox" logo to the bottom of the page you would expect the forum to look better in Gecko-based browser over Explorer. The design is still royally screwed up in FireFox as well as these code-tag areas displaying incomprehenable jibberish.

I'm not changing my settings just for one website feature.. why screw up the 20-30 websites i regularly visit because of 1 which can't seem to be designed to handle such issues?

I had the same thing happen when using FireFox last year, and the year before. I created a thread about it and there's a number of possible solutions at:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=52816&b=2

I think I just ended up creating/modifying an actual font (and its name) to match the one the code tag tries to grab, now everything works fine but it was the most annoying issue for the longest time!

I too am using Firefox and have this exact same problem, though it's likely due to the fact I installed the japanese language pack, however I'm pretty sure it started happening before that, and it would be a better solution if the forums fixed this rather than the user having to manually change things.

I use opera, the forums looks fine. But Opera does have a zoom in and out feature, chances are you've turned that on by accident.

No, in fact the font only works when the page is zoomed in our out, as I said it renders Terminal wrong at 12pt.

I have removed the use of 'Terminal' from the style sheet and swapped it with Courier. However this is NOT a browser specific problem and never has been, it is PC specific - as has been demonstrated time after time, year after year. For some reason, which no-one has ever managed to track down, something in their OS stops the rendering of the Terminal font in a browser (or rather renders it as a bitmap), simple as that.

It is not as simple as 'it doesn't work in Opera', because it's not that specific at all. For each screen shot showing it corrupted in Opera or FF, I can show you one where it works fine in the exact same build of browser running on the same version of Windows. No-one has ever worked out what causes it, me included, but I can only suspect it's something to do with the OS itself, or the location of a font file, or font driver, or god-knows-what.

Yeah, I realized that from people's replies. It's weird though, It's happened to me on two different computers with two different version of Opera installed, so I have no idea what the similarity is.

Edit: None of the old code snippets look right, does that mean that it will only take place on newer ones?

test:

Still doesn't work; the font is embedded in the pre tag, not the style sheet.

I agree still isn't fixed, for now I have decreaced the font size by one step, and that seems to be working fine, however I prefer the older size text.

it used to happen to my in some installations of xp, i think i decided it was a fault in the font installation in windows. (for me it was firefox and mozilla browsers it ocurred in).
you could try installing new fonts for terminal in windows

AMD athlon 64 3000+, 1GB ddr400, 400GB total hdd, ati radeon x700pro 256mb (pci-e) 17" tft(@1280x1024).

I removed the use of Terminal from the style sheet, so you don't need to 'hack' around it anymore if it happened for you. It just uses Courier now, which Windows will always have by default. Ensure your cache is fully refreshed to get the new CSS file.

No-one ever did work out what caused it, and I doubt we ever will now.

QuothTheRaven is correct. The style for the Code Snippet doesn't seem to be in the CSS files, Rich. Its injected into the pre tag and so would overwrite any CSS style set for it. It actually looks like this:

Clearing the cache and even loading each CSS file manually and refreshing them doesn't fix it.
The only reason I have added my 2p worth is because I get the same problem from a machine I use with Netscape 4.7 (which I use to test site compatibility). The exact same version of Netscape on another machine works fine, so its certainly a Windows fault rather than a browser one.

I knew there was another file lurking somewhere. Try it now.
