The thanksgiving thread gave me an odd idea. If there were a "Programmers day" or "Game makers Day" as a world wide holiday what sort of traditions do you think it would encompass?

I say the holiday meal is Cold Pizza and Jolt Cola.

anyone want to add to the "holiday traditions"?

And it has to be 24 hours of programming. Not programming anything we're working on now but a totally new program just for the holiday. If the person celebrating "Programming Day" knows other people that program they get together as a group to make the game.

I just had a thought that it should be called "Coder Day" because people that judge if a TV show stays or goes are also called programmers.

I did a search for "coder holiday" and ran across an interesting site where people "rent" us. They're a service that holds onto the money from the client till you produce a program or just answer a coding question.

I think if there's a programmers day, the main thing that should happen is all programmers get the day off

Everybody bathes in redbull for 3 hours when the clock strikes 12. Shortly after, we all gather in the woods in world of warcraft atire, whilst throwing yellow-paper origami and salt at each other, yelling "lightning bolt!" and "blinding powder!" the entire time.

After that, its all out rage as every programmer in the world gets on counter strike.

There are 365 days per year available for work.

There are 52 weeks per year in which you already have 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work.

Since you spend 16 hours each day away fron work, you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days available.

You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available.

With a 1 hour lunch each day, you used up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available for work.

You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave.

This leaves you only 20 days per year available for work.

We are off 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down to 15 days.

We generously give 14 days vacation per year which leaves only 1 day available for work.

There's no way I'll let you take that day off!"

@Hobgoblin Lord,
I've seen that before, but there are some very serious errors with it.

First, the coffee breaks would only account for 5.4 days, not 23. The lunch break is already taken care of by your 16 hours off each day. Even then, an hour for each of the 261 days you work only adds up to 10.875 days (261/24), not 46. That's just what I see as the most obvious errors there. I think whoever thought that up failed their math class.

I love my job(s), but having a day off now and then really helps to keep your mind clear.

Good performance is better than a good excuse.

Hyrichter, of course it is full of errors and "fuzzy math" everything is computed using all 365 days and hours already creditied somewhere else.

example the coffee breaks (30*365)=10950 minutes=182.5 hours=22.8 (8 hour work days)

A true lesson on how statistics can be manipulated to prove just about anything

How many of us "slave" in front of a computer at work only to come home and "enjoy" being on the computer?

Using computers isn't work or play... it's a way of life. A programmers holiday must involve the computer.

I think that's off somewhere, let me try it myself...

Quote: "There are 365 days per year available for work."

yes

Quote: "

yes

Quote: "Since you spend 16 hours each day away fron work, you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days available."

most don't spend sixteen, if you work from 8 to 5, so let's say 15 away, so that's 160 days, leaving you with 101

Quote: "You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available."

Umm...I have no idea how they got that, 30 minutes a day, so (.5 hours)(261 days)/24 hours = 5.4375 days. Maybe I did it wrong, but I don't think so . So that leaves you with 95 days.

Quote: "With a 1 hour lunch each day, you used up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available for work."

again don't know how they got that, because. (1 hour)(261 days)/24 hours = 10.875 days. 85 days.

Quote: "You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave."

so 83 days

Quote: "We are off 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down to 15 days."

so 78 days

Quote: "We generously give 14 days vacation per year which leaves only 1 day available for work."

and most don't use all of them every year, but still about 65 days.

And that means 65 straight days, as in 24 hours each day, working, so it's about 1500 hours a year. Sorry just felt like checking those numbers out .

I disagree, computers are a way of life for some people, like me for instance, i spend nearly every hour of the day at a computer and when I’m not at one, I’m on my way to one or doing a short minor activity that a computer either isn’t needed for or hasn’t been invented for yet. Such as one that controls the toilet and one that can feed me. Also I wouldn’t be against such machines, i wanna be a freaking machine personally but that’s just me. On a more general scale, computers are a way of life because some people’s lives are based entirely around computers in the same way some peoples lives are based entirely around music or sports.

Making computers a way of life is unhealthy, I'd get some other hobbies that don't involve computers, heck some that get you out of the house, it will do you good, I mean my sister has computers as her way of life, it does her no good, for one thing she is addicted, and like anything you become addicted to being away from it effects your moods terribly, same happens with anything you spend too much time enjoying with.

I wonder if she agrees with your analysis because people have said the same of me but others have disagreed, myself included.

Quote: "like anything you become addicted to being away from it effects your moods terribly, same happens with anything you spend too much time enjoying with."

Sounds a bit generalized to me. I do things all the time which I enjoy but which I can drop at any time, going to the Gym for example. I am addicted to Adrenaline and love running but it doesn’t mean I run every day and get moody if I don’t. Same with TV, I used to watch it all the time but I stopped at soon as I got to uni and not just because I didn’t have Sky anymore because I could have bought box sets but didn’t, I just switched to new tasks.

Sounds to me like you don't have other hobbies, which generally isn't a good idea.

I was like that too, when I was in school, and I regret it heavily now because in a way it has carried over. I program all day at work, come home and program and/or play video games. The weekend is the only time for me to get away, and 50% of the time I'm at home on the computer again. It's not a healthy lifestyle--- I'm glad I have a high metabolism, that's for sure

As Jeku just pointed out, you just contradicted yourself, how can you spend all most every hour of the day on the computer and go to the gym regularly? And well when you do something far too much, you do become so addicted you depend on doing it, hence negative moods.

Some of the time I do believe I spend too much time on my computer, I even thought sacrifice all of my PC hobbies and use it for games only, come to think of it I'm still considering it.

I grew up around computers so I have no idea what it's like without one.

Balley Arcade Machine (had a cartridge to program in basic)
TSR-80 Model 1 (tape drive at first then a 5 1/4)
TI Professional
Tandy 1000
NEC
Many Frankenstein Computers

If being off the computer is "normal" it's a foreign concept to me... oh wait I do sleep... does that count?

Chances are I’m going to end up marrying that type of girl you know.

Because I wake up, turn my PC on, check a whole bunch of links I have in FF using right-click > open in tabs (this forum being one of them) then get changed, go to uni where I’m in a computer lab for an unhealthy 8 hours straight, not even braking for lunch most days, and then I’m off home where asides from cooking (when I’m listening to my iPod ill have ya know) or showering, going to the toilet etc I’m right where I am now, in front of my laptop. The only exception to this routine is that every other day I spend three hours in the gym lifting weights and twice a week running for about three hours. Hence I go to the gym regularly and spend most waking hours on my PC, I guess to make it exceptionally clear I would need to have put the word except in there.

Also I don’t depend on my computer usage, its just my life’s not got a lot of point to it otherwise considering I am doing computers at university, I am a programming and I’m aiming to be a computer game designer...I suppose I could use pen and paper to plan my games and that but why use a rock to cut meat when I have a knife?

Maybe that is so, but we only had to go on what you said, and that lead me to offer that piece of advice about not sticking to a computer all you life, at that point how was I to know you do other things as you gave us this piece of info:

Quote: "I disagree, computers are a way of life for some people, like me for instance, i spend nearly every hour of the day at a computer and when I’m not at one, I’m on my way to one or doing a short minor activity that a computer either isn’t needed for or hasn’t been invented for yet. -Spend nearly every hour of the day
-When not on computer on my way to or doing a 'short minor activity that computers haven't been invented yet, such as control toilets or can feed me'

That means to anyone reading that, 'I'm on the computer at every single chance I get' sign of an unhealthy addict, hence my point of advice, this new piece of info about doing sports a gym work a lot contradicts that. Hey man just don't say two things about yourself that are contradictory, it kind of weakens any point your making.

Quote: "Chances are I’m going to end up marrying that type of girl you know."

Sounds like you have an eye on someone in your computer class at uni Mind you a lot of girls are like the one I mentioned, just replace the static void stuff with something else, like I don't know anything you'll ever claim to know in your life

I wish, as far as I know, these girls don’t exist, not programming ones anyway...really annoys me that...and smokers, they really annoy me cus most are very good looking and friendly but I will not ever date a smoker...not even when she's stunning and asking me out...grrr. >.<

Dude, you can't say no to some one because they smoke, go out with them and figure that problem out, I mean if you like them, the unpleasantries can be figured out It doesn't matter as long as you like each other.

I don't think it's the computer itself thats addictive it's what's you're doing on it. People can be Game Addicts, Porn Addicts, MySpace Addicts, EBay Addicts, Chatroom Addicts, Wiki Addicts, and even Forum Addicts (nobody here of course ).
