hi all,

check out this brilliant documentary on the classic puzzle game TETRIS, It's creator, the communist state, and the underhand dealings of the games industry during the late 80's early 90's.

it might upset Rich a tad seeing this, being the worlds biggest Atari fan 'n all. :p

copy and paste link this into your browser.

from my memory without looking at the link it was made by two guys in a university in russia and the university would not let them use the code for commercial purposes becuase they made it on campus with the equipment in house, old skool news with most serious developers around here.

nothing to do with university m8, more the communist state and the KGB, underhand dealings with Robert Maxwell at top communist levels, almost sinking atari corp, and the domination by nintendo.

this is an amazing story.

ahh so it was one guy Dimitry, I had a bad recollection it was two guys.
after reading the wikipedia version I can see where my wires were crossed.
It appears to be made at the Soviet_Academy_of_Sciences
Funny how a government got involved.

I strongly remember two guys involved, perhaps its when it was ported that got me mixed up.

I remember that, it was on TV about a year ago, damn interesting.

I couldn't help feeling sorry for Atari after what Nintendo did to them, that was pretty evil to leave it so long then drop the anvil on them just as they were about to ship .

Good buisness sense to utterly destory your competitors chances of competing really. And lets face it, the Atari systems where great machines! But the management wasn't that great. Nintendo won in the long run, and you've got to hand it to them.

Funny you should mention that Sly D, because thats exactly what nintendo done to Sony with the playstation, the PSX was never designed to be a sony console, it only become such after nintendo pulled out of the deal. nintendo seem to be very adept at underhand dealings. when nintendo pulled out of the playstation deal it left sony with a SNES compatible console and advanced 3d hardware, Sony stipped it of SNES backwards compatibility and the playstation was born, and the playstation is the console that allmost put nintendo under in the first round of NexGEN console wars.

@ geecee3;

I thought it was Sony who pulled out on Nintendo, taking along with them the rights to CD (or something like that, don't remeber correctly), which in turn caused Nintendo to flop with its cartridge design for N64.

Nope--- Nintendo pulled out on Sony, and I'm sure they're kicking themselves now.
