Man U don't play an attack in the same way as most teams. They don't feed their strikers to score, they attack quickly in numbers.

That means Rooney is just one of many, rather than the last piece of a chain. It is often his vision and intelligence that links the move together though. He's the only one who can play tight technical football and feed from the middle. Giggs, Scholes, Neville and Ronaldo all prefer to provide from the wings. They would not play as well without him.

It's similiar with England - Owen is the goal machine, we've got Lampard and Gerrard who are pretty much the highest scoring midfielders in the world, Rooney just needs to thread the midfield and attack together.

What he does (and what pretty much no one else in the world can do) is hold it up, up front while still attacking and being a threat. Drogba can hold it up really well, but he always stops and waits for the midfield. Rooney has the same effect, but he is constantly troubling defenders while he does it.

But he has scored quite a bit in previous seasons, hasn't he? I'm not saying he's playing poorly, it just seems like he isn't particularly going for goal as often as he could. I understand how he's forging every offensive, but it just seems like lately he's passed up a few good scoring opportunities so he could play the ball to Ronaldo. But maybe I'm just looking at it wrong, hehe.

You're right BUT you were talking about the end of the 49-match unbeaten run in your previous post, which was Wayne's 18th birthday.

THIERRY HENRY!

Sorry, but passing the ball to himself a good 20 yards away and scoring with that on Aston Villa negates all conversation about Mr. Rooney Did anyone else see that? Un-real! I seem to be having a very difficult time naming anyone as talented as him right now, whose playing today anyway. Maybe, *maybe* Ronaldihno, and maybe, *maybe* C. Ronaldo given a few more years experience, but that simply took my breath away.

Newcastle = 1; Birmingham = 5!
Who on earth saw THAT coming! Total Massacre at St. James!

It's finally coming... Man-U versus Arsenal with Thierry Henry back on his feet. I've been yearning for this for the past few months for some reason... I mean yeah, it's happened before, but for some reason it's going to be far better this time around. Here in the states it'll be on at 11am Sunday... can't wait! I hate making predictions between my two absolute favorite teams, but I'd have to go with 2-1 Man-U. I would be happy regardless of the result though... it's just always fun to watch them face off.

What a game!

Odds on Rooney AND Henry scoring headers??

Quality entertainment I would have killed to be there.

WOW. Just... WOW. Such a beautiful game, imo that's the game of the year. Here's how I called it previously in this thread:

Quote: "I hate making predictions between my two absolute favorite teams, but I'd have to go with 2-1 Man-U."

Who on earth would have predicted it would be 2-1 ARSENAL! Rooney, gorgeous header. Van Persie, incredible shot on goal, Henry? I can't find the words. A game-saving header in the last few seconds of the game, that has to be one of his best goals of the season, and it's definitely one of the (if not THE) most important goals for Arsenal this season. It was a hard match to watch... I love both teams almost equally, but I was definitely happy with the result and I can't wait to see a replay of this match.

GRR! First, I just saw the Man-U/ Portsmouth game (very, very late)... Vidic's ball CLEARLY went over the line. Throughout that game the ref was making some rancid calls, and I thought I'd seen the worst of it...

But then TODAY happened! The ref in the Arsenal/ Middlesbrough match was so horrible it was laughable! Seriously, he gives Senderos a red and for what? Am I the only person who didn't think that was justified in the least? Senderos tapped the striker on the shoulder. He didn't slam into him, he didn't spit in his face, he didn't Zidane him in the chest... he tapped him on the shoulder, and the boro player takes a dive hoping for the penalty. Then to add some icing to the cake, the ref decides to yellow Lehmann for talking back. Some refs just need to be fired!

Speaking of Jens Lehmann, what do you guys think he's going to do at the end of the summer? Will he want to leave Arsenal, or a better question, would Wenger want to keep him? He's getting pretty old and he's infamously short-tempered. imo, that's no reason to let him go. I really want him to stay with the gunners, imo he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Arsenal will offer him a one year contract, some German or Spanish club will offer him four...

I would imagine he will stay unless they recon they can get Buffon.

Senderos was pretty fair I think. He's inexperienced, should have known not to play the man.

That's what the foul was for - not playing the ball - it is a lame foul, one of the absolute weakest, but if he's the last defender and its 'a clear goalscoring opportunity', it has to be red.

It is a bit stupid when you consider some of the horror tackles that get away with yellow.

That game did have its fair share of meaty challenges and the ref continuously said "play on." Wenger is seeing his lines continue to thin out, with Senderos off the pitch for a number of games and a visibly-weary Adebayor (I thought he was playing poorly that game, probably from exaustion) desperately in need of a game or two off. Then of course there's his list of injury-stricken players, most notably Robin Van Persie, without whom I think Arsenal has lost any hopes of overpowering Man-U. I'm sure Arsenal is going to stay in the race, and they might even have a shot at overtaking Liverpool and *maybe* Chelsea with a bit of luck, but Man-U is how many points clear of them now? I'm sorry to say it, but I think Arsenal's title hopes are vanquished.

What happened in Italy? I heard they were broadcasting the game (I think it was Cantonia vs. someone, not sure) on FSC and they cut the feed mid-game, and replaced it with infomercials or something. And when I just tuned in to see a replay to find out what happened, they'd replaced it entirely with a replay of the Arsenal/ boro match. Does anyone know what's going on with that match? I haven't seen a network drop footage like that in a long time, not since 1989 when the Hillsborough accident happened. I hope nothing like that happened with this match

And please, nobody say anything about Man-U/ Spurs! I didn't get to see it earlier and now I have to wait until 5pm EST to see the match. I don't want to know the score, or who scored (if anyone scored), or anything. I'm hoping man-u scores a bunch though, especially Saha and Ronaldo... they're both on my FSC EPL Fantasy team and I could win scores of cash if they play well But anyway, don't let me know lol.

Italian football is cancelled indefinitely due to Hooliganism.

A policeman got killed in riots at a derby.

It will probably be back in two weeks or so, but the prime minister is asking for a year ban.

That's insane, I just heard about it this afternoon. I hope they don't ban it for a full year . I don't watch Italian footy but it would be aweful if they dropped all of the italian games because of this.

Now let's see how they do in the premiership Man U is on fire! Who do you guys think will come in second and third? Man U is pretty much clear of the competition, so it's Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal fighting for second, lol. I wouldn't put it passed Arsenal to catch up though, If they can overtake Liverpool in points then this will start getting very, very close.

I only saw the Under 21 England/ Spain match, that one was somewhat decent. Stewart Pearce definitely has his work cut out for him though. I also watched Portugal/ Brazil... GASP! I didn't think Brazil would get their hind-ends slapped around like that, it was depressing. They should have had Adriano in the starting 11, he could have scored early-on and changed the tempo of the game. But Cristiano Ronaldo's footwork was absolutely brilliant during the match, I was extremely impressed by that.

WARNING: If you haven't seen the Arsenal/ Wigan match, skip this post!

I'm convinced now, beyond all reason of doubt. I don't need any more proof. Arsene Wenger is a TGC forum member, and has it in for me personally. Arsenal seems to be keeping me on the edge of my seat, and just when I think all hope is lost, they pull out the magic that they had today. These better-late-than-never wins seems to be all the rage for the gunners of late, but seriously, I understood it when Man-u was putting the heat on, but Wigan? WIGAN? Who thought Wigan was going to draw first blood, and who predicted they'd come as close as they did to defeating, then drawing with the all-mighty Arsenal? Unbelievable match, but Arsenal keeps their "you can't stop us at Emirates" record, and now we're just one point shy of Liverpool. And who knows, maybe with a bit of luck there's going to be a dogfight for second place

Okay... so... yesterday, Man U scores three goals in six minutes, but then they battle like crazy to avoid being defeated. And today, Arsenal loses to Rovers? Wha?!? I'm shocked and appalled that they lost today, but look at the injury/ suspension list: Thierry Henry, Adebayor, Van Persie, Lehmann... the list goes on for eons. I would have loved to see Arsenal work their way into the quarterfinals for the FA cup, but to be robbed by Rovers like they were... it's just insulting.

And yes, robbed. One clear penalty that the ref ignored, one possible penalty he ignored, a dozen cards that should have been dished out to Rovers but ignored... it was obvious who that ref favored to win

Oh come on... seriously, the referee definitely ignored that blatent foul and denied Arsenal a perfectly fair penalty kick. And all of the times Rovers were fouling Arsenal, especially Tugay's nastiness, that all went unchecked... I personally thought it was unfair. It's not like refs are infallable or anything, they definitely make mistakes, I seriously think this is another instance of that.

Okay... proof that referees are definitely fallable. Did you see today's West Ham/ Rovers match? That's stone-hard evidence that refs make epic, life-changing mistakes from time to time . He could have single-handedly decided if West Ham is getting religated or not.

Wasn't referee fully, assistant yes. Never a goal, big mess up on part of assistant, but do you think he'll be happy with the mistake?

I actually do think it was a penalty though,

lol Chris , sad but true, with the teams they'll be facing in the coming matches, and with how many of those games they'll need to win to stay in the Prem, it's definitely looking dreary for West Ham. I wonder if they'll fire this manager as well .

The linesman was in a bad position. He had the goal post in his way and in that split second was forced to make a call, and it just happened to be a horrible one. Still, I think this is proof for the debate about using video replays live during matches, to show refs what they might not be able to see on the ground. I'm all for it, especially after some of the horrific calls that have happened this season, calls that could have been avoided if video replays were shown during the games. But it seems like whenever I suggest that, everyone disagrees, so I doubt we'll actually see it implemented in the future, too many people are apparently against it .

If by "All the way" you mean "avoiding relegation" then sure, hehe

btw, GO GUNNERS . Not that Fulham is a tough team to beat or anything, but way to rally in the very end of the game (as usual) . One point short of Liverpool now. Ironically I'll be rooting for Fulham to beat Liverpool. Of course that won't happen, but if somehow it magically does, then Arsenal is sitting happy in third place again, hehe.
