the wii sounded awesome at first to alot of people... but think about it... lets say we were playing red steel or something and we kept swinging our arms over and over again... after a few hours, you'd be incredebly tired! then the next day, you'd be so sore, you couldn't even play that whole DAY!!!

i heard wii made a controller that doesnt involve the swinging... but is it true? because the zelda game sounds good and of course... ocarina of time for the n64 was the best game ever.

You'd get buff.

But seriously, I'd feel sorry for the person who gets tired from swinging around a ~two pound~ remote.

(the '~' signs mean approximate. someone correct me if wrong cuz I'm just guessing )

you dont have to swing with the normal controller (wiimote). When I bought it my friend told me. It is still fun, bet less than half the physical effort. The bottom is true as well.

I think you're over-estimating just how vigorous a movement is required to trip the sensor. It's nothing like you describe, but in short I think the Wii will sort out the lazy sods from the mildly-fit ones

If you're not capable of moving your arms gently for more than an hour without getting sore the next day, then I'd say you've got bigger issues to worry about than your console.

Nintendo should really take this into account, with so many people being unfit these days not many would be able to adjust to physically interacting with the game.

That's part of the game experience. In real life you'd get tired swining your heavy sword.

But still, there's a difference between a sword and a little remote Even though I think it'd be beneficial for the remotes to be heavy. Nothin' better than a little excercise to counterbalance all that McDonalds eh?

... well, other than A LOT of excercise

I think perhaps the point is nintendo HAVE taken this into account and finally made a console that will help tackle this. People should NOT be that unfit, its not healthy, its the fast track to death and to be honest a big reason for it is such fun and addictive games getting better and better and having people sat in doors instead of playing in the street like we used to years ago. Now someone has made a console with awesome games, nice and fun but also requires a little activity. this whole "im not fit enough, I cant do it!" is nonsense, do it for just a little while for as much as you can and you will find your stamina rising, your fitness getting slightly better, etc. and after that you will be able to play the same games as everyone else AND will be a healthier person for it.

kudos nintendo.

we just got sent a free Wii by nintendo for reviewing games btw Its not even out in our country (england) yet xD spent the evening on wii sports and zelda XD

I have a friend who owns a Wii (too far away for me to play it though ) i asked him about how exaggerated the movements have to be and he said they don't have to be that big (although him and his friends don't let each other potatoe on the couch)

really, they dont at all. whilst playing golf for example in wii sports, for alot of us the problem was we were too easilly hitting it TOO hard and we really had to be gentle for the putting and accuracy etc.

Competing with much more powerful machines in the next-gen battle, I am wondering if Nintendo would have been better off releasing their wiimote as an add-on for the GameCube rather than designing a new console around it? After all, it seems the majority of people are buying it because of the control device.
Just a thought.

A lie. The nintento graphical chip is the same as the 360's. The only difference is the processor, which tbh, isnt that great of a deal. It might affect a performance a bit, but I dont really think so. The wii is a very powerful machine.

Zappo, that comment made me laugh. How many games would use the Wiimote if it were an add on? IF the console isn't designed around it, Nintendo would be the only one utilizing it, and it would flop. The reason it's so good is that the console it based completely around it. And the cube has a bad rep for many people, while the Wii has a pretty good one so far. And can you imagine non-gamers even looking at a gc because of an add on? I know I, a pc and hand-held gamer, would not be getting a Wii is it were a gc add-on.
Shortly, Nintendo would go out of business if they had just made an add-on rather than a new console.

But as you said, it was just a thought, so it's not like you thought it through more than once.

If you get tired using the Wii-mote, then you should consider not playing games at all, as button mashing would be too much strain for you.

Nobody ever get tired hands from traditional controllers? - the only controllers that I find really comfortable are the original XBox chunky mothers!, so I'm looking forward to something different.

I think that people might get tired unecesserily just by getting into the game, it's a controller, not a lump of lead, I imagine it's more about accuracy with Wii sports than how fast you can swing a remote that weighs less than some chocolate bars.

Besides, nobody bitched about dance mats, and they sold like hot cakes to non-gamers all over the planet. It seems to me that the wrong people are sceptical about the Wii, because it's not marketed at us, designed for us, and the games wont be made with us in mind - it's a new gen console, in that a new generation of gamers will take to it, and that's who Nintendo plan to sell to.

Not buying a Wii because you think it'll be to strenious, well that's just sad, nobody is gonna care. Does anyone remember Nintendo's light gun on the SNES? - a bazooka!. I remember watching someone in disbelief as they used said bazooka to play a tetris style puzzle game. If your willing to play tetris with a bazooka, then the little Wiimote thing is not gonna put anyone off. I think some people need to remind themselves why they play games in the first place, or at least why they started playing - I guarantee it wasn't because those buttons and direction pad looked inviting.

Could be cool if Wii put out a dance mat and you needed the feet and hands both

I have played it and you do not need to swing the thing like a maniac once you get used to (though we do anyway). I as a parent applaud this console and will likely get one (eh for the kids yeah). I am so glad the added this activity to the game.

I am waiting for the Wii to be released in Europe to get my preorder, but as of late I have been getting a bit worried about the "endurance" of the console.

I am a gameplay gamer first and formost, and that's why I have always favoured Nintendo's consoles. Sure, I love to play a good looking game as much as the next man, but gfx has never been my primary concern.

However, I am genuinely concerned with how under-powered the Wii seems. Remember, each console generation should be able to stand for 5 or so years and I am under the impression that 2 years down the line - when developers really get the hang of 360 and PS3's hardware - that the chasm between the harvested power on these two consoles and the Wii will be so great that making a version for the latter it'll be like now porting Doom3 to the GBA.

My concern was summarised at the end of IGN's (mostly positive) preview of Far Cry Vengeance:

Quote: "
When moving quickly, the jungle seems to have all of the detail as in previous Far Cry games, but as soon as you stop moving and look closely, a distinctly muddy look surrounds you.

No one is disputing that the Wii lacks the graphical bells and whistles of its competitors, but that doesn't mean that Wii games have to look worse than Xbox or GameCube games. Nevertheless, several Wii games do. Compared to Far Cry Instincts on the Xbox, Far Cry Vengeance looks fairly awful. Textures everywhere lack detail, and the framerate often dips below 30 fps.
"

So... really... why the heck do Wii games look worse than Xbox 1's? It worries me that (while developers still have to learn how to be better use the controller) the Wii specs and architecture is suposedly a classic one, like the GC was - meaning that there's not much to discover and squeeze out of the hardware as time goes by...

To be completely honest, if you can't move this Wii controller around for an hour or so without dropping dead from exhaustion, you must be at deaths door. That controller won't make a BLIND bit of difference to your physical health either. I don't know how much it will weigh, but 2 pounds sounds crazy ... I would estimate 8oz-10oz (300g) tops, unless they stick some lead in it just to piss everyone off.

I played with the Wii for a little while on a demo pod, and I can assure everyone that the remote isn't any heavier than a normal TV control (it's certainly way lighter than my Thrustmaster PC gamepad).

Any exhertion one may have playing the Wii will come simply from swinging your arms around, not by you holding anything heavy on your hand.

Well, why do GameCube games remain smooth while XBox games stutter and lag left right and centre?

The Wii may not have the graphical ooomph of the PS3 or 360, but what it does have and what the GameCube had is a completely different graphics pipeline - people should play games for their playability, smooth graphics=more playability. How come the GameCube can bend the screen so nicely and have refraction effects, while the XBox has to cheat!. Who knows what the Wii will be capable of, once developers get used to the console, we'll see astounding works of art like RE4 and Pikmin2, you just have to be patient.

For xmas my son is getting a Wii with sports and Zelda, and a 360 with Gears'o'war and Pro Evo - it'll be interesting to see which one get's the most attention.

Honestly, I'm not that fit, so on the first day of playing wii sports I got tired and sore the next day. However, you get used to it fast, and I can't imagine going back to the standard controller.

They should make a hefty version of the Wii-mote for parents to buy for their chunky kids. Make them get some exercise if they're going to be playing video games.

Pfft. You adapt by doing. I'm terrible simply because I find repetitive exercise boring as heck, and have never been much for team sports even as a teen when I could hike all day and not worry about it!

I think the Wii controller is good for exercise rather than a source of tiredness, there are too many fat gamers, it might do people some good Okay it doesn't compare to running, but its better than sitting on your fat bum pushing a bunch of buttons.

It's just damn good marketing by Nintendo (and it's about time too). If you're a parent with the best in mind for you children, and you have to get them a console, would you buy them one that makes them actually get up off the couch and move, or one where they sit, fused to the sofa the whole day staring concentrated at the screen?

Mmmm. I think there are a few more differences than that. Its overall power has been compared to that of the original XBox, which isn't necessarily a bad thing - but 'next gen'? Its the controller which is the reason people are classing it as a next gen console.

I would disagree with that. I think people are developing games for it because of the controller rather than the machine.
It would have been a hell of a lot cheaper to develop, manufacture and promote an add-on than a whole new console, especially if the console itself is outpowered by the competition and doesn't bring anything else new (other than the controller) to the market.

would not have been cheaper because they would have lost profit.

and anyways it's not like the controller is the only upgrade. They added Wi-Fi (along with a sweet "live" system) and improved the graphics (leaving them the same as the gamecube would have been stupid when everybody else is improving, sure they didn't over perform the others, but they didn't with the gamecube either) + who knows what else.

and i really think nobody would have bought a add-on controller. I sure wouldn't have, because i would have had to buy a gamecube first, and i've already bought an xbox. but the Wii has made me want to get it more than a xbox360 (which is impressive since i didn't like the gamecube )

It's being classified as next gen because gen is short for generation. Just because something doesn't have as good as graphics as other consoles doesn't mean it's next gen. Seriously I could create something with 2 bit mono internal speaker sound, and a whopping 16 color display, release it, market it, and call it next gen. It's just this cycle of the consoles.

I am talking real COST rather than expected/projected profits.
Quote: "It's being classified as next gen because gen is short for generation."

Thanks for clearing that up I know the term 'next generation' has no real defined meaning and is down to personal interpretation, but in this sense precindence dictates its meaning to be the consoles most recently released or to be released in the next few months from companies who have previously released consoles.
Unless you have previously released a console with inferior specs to those you mention, I don't think you can say yours would be 'next generation' (as there was no previous generation to compare it with).

They usually care about cost because the lower the cost the greater the profit.

Edit: Cost as in the amount of money the business has to spend to make the product.
