I'm sure all of you have been seeing my posts, listing problems, etc. And one of those was a lockup with a high-pitched noise. Well, last night when I opened iTunes, it did this high pitched lockup, and I thought "But BF 2142 was almost done downloading for the reinstall!", but that was definately not the worst of it. When I tried to start my PC, it showed the splash screen that takes to to setup, system restore, etc., but after it showed that screen, and normally goes to the blackness before it starts boting Windows, it just stays black..nothing more.. So I though of memory right away, because I heard your system will work to a point without RAM, and that seems like the place it would stop (Please tell me if I am right or wrong). Also! Thats right...also... My graphics card failed during this... (When I first got my PC, I had lots of memory errors comming up, and this lockup/games closing out of nowhere might be a problem with my RAM.. It would all fit together if this RAM thing was correct.)

The End.
Please tell me if you know the problem, and how to fix. Thanks.

I would recommend chucking it in a skip and setting fire to it.

If you don't want to do that, I would recommend a total reformat and reinstall of everything, plus a check to make sure all the cooling fans are working inside the compo and all the connections to RAM chips, GPU etc. aren't caked in dust and causing overheating. Dust the compo with a compo vacume or static free duster.

I would still put chucking it into a skip as your best bet though.

Haha, you have no idea how much I want to do that, but I have done that to one of my computers before, and it was not happy. Long story short: My friend put the graphics card BACK into the PC. Plus-- it is hard to burn PCs... I did check my fans, all of them are working except the GFX card, wich is toast..
Cleared (or blew all around) the dust.
I moved the RAM from one slot to another, wich didn't work, and...
Thats all.

My mate has always had crashes with his compo sinse it was new. At one point it crashed loads, and we removed one of the RAM chips and then it worked fine. It's not necessarily the lack of ram that causes the problems, because virtual memory will make up the shortfall, it's possibly a dodgy ram chip. Either way, perhaps make sure the RAM chip connectors look pristine and that inside the ram slots its clean of dust. A bad connection will cause problems because, as your compo uses more and more RAM, eventually it'll get to the "problem cell" on the RAM chip, the data will get corrupted and problems will start to happen.

If you have another compo or a friend with another compo, you could try using their RAM chip(s) instead, and just see what happens. Make sure you discharge your static first though, because I believe RAM chips are more likely to be damaged by static than most other components.

hehe. I wouldn't play games if your GFX fan is toast either! Recipe for disaster!

Well, my ram slots are right under a load of cables...about the size of a tennis ball, that I cannot move, so I have no idea how I would 'check' to see if the ram slts were dusty. I'm having a trained nerd comming, so he can check that. And my GFX fan isn't the problem, the entire GFX is just not working, but this is my chance to get a card that will last me longer... To bad I only have one PCI-E slot.

To be honest, I gave up on my computer before it gave up on me, just goes to show who has the most patience, obviously it does and it beat me at my own game...outsmarted...by an inanimate object...

(I really should stop insulting my computer, now that I've learnt tricks to keep me in upmost control I've got the best out of my system)

Hard luck on your computer giving up, my old computer did that on me, when I had a half finished awesome TGF game that I was completing back when I was starting out with DBC and DBP, damn motherboard couldn't hack the graphics card I had just bought for it.

Also, make sure it is completely gone, I mean I thought this computer had gone when my graphics card became loose after a screw feel out, right next to the circuit board, I was soooo lucky it did not short circuit.

Have you passed your warranty, if you haven't, then you still can take it back.

I havn't passed the warranty, but can't take it back. It has been opened.

And I'm not going to buy a new PC if I don't have to.

Stick your old PC up on eBay, sell it as a "spares and repair", list the problems with it honestly. Remove the hard disk drive if you want to keep private data out of peoples hands. You might get a few quid from it to help get a New machine, by the sound of it, it would require an experianced technican to repair the system, they sometimes comb ebay for machines to referbish.

I would really rather just fix it. Don't want to deal with that hassle.

Good luck. I've been doing it for a few years, and I'd just get rid of the thing, unless I was in my old workshop with my selection of dianoistic PCI cards, and spare bit's and bobs to test with. You where talking of getting a Direct X 10 card in the other thread, so clearly you are not lacking for funds.

Love the technical termamology! you have a point, however I assume given the number of problems this users been having with this single machine, that he's had the foresight to ensure everything is firmly slotted in place.

If you want nerds, try a nerd forum, but I don't see why you'd wanna do that, you'd be called an idiot several times over, at least with geeks you can understand what they are saying

Thats why I'm not using a nerd forum. This way if the nerd has something to say, they say it to my face, wich is much less likly.

Quote: "it did this high pitched lockup"

i used to get that error before i bought my new computer.

yesterday i tried to fix that problem, due to my sister complaining about it all the time. It turned out one of the Hard Drives were broken. (no wonder, it used a helluva lot of time to read/write and it usually stopped when it had to do "too much" work).

so i removed the hard drive and as of now it works good as new.

though as i am at work now, i can't tell for sure if it still works.

Nothing that I can do about it now, until both drives ae in a PC that actually boots windows, so I can trash the 60gb one.
