Map, Level, World. what's the difference? World building programs such as 3DWS and CS4 are often described as either a map editor, level editor or a world editor. What is the difference?

Oh, and is it just me, or have the forums been rather quiet recently? I'm subscribed on a lot of threads, and where as before I would get up to 10 emails a day telling me a reply had been posted, I now get only 1 every 3 days, if I'm lucky! I guess it just depends on the topic of the thread.

its all relative to each computer game or program.

a map can be a level and a world.
a world can be a map and a level.
a level can be a map and a world.

your level however might consist of a map and extra data.
your world might consist of a series of maps or just one, that is a level with other data.
your map might be a level with data.

I've allways though about it like this:

Map:
a map is a Level object with textures, but no other objects.
to give you an idea of what the level looks like.

Level:
a level is a level object with additional entites, such as weapons, ammo crates, healthpacks etc.

World:
a world is a very large level, consisting of terrains, houses, other entities, action zones, etc. etc.

but i think Indi explained it quite well.
