Neither 3D world studio, nor cartography shop 4 work on my PC, I officially give up on looking for decent world building programs. can anyone else suggest any?

Also, it's VERY important that they can export textures to DBC.

Hi Sonic,

One of the easiest modeling and level building programs I've used is Deled. There is a lite version that is free. Here's a link:

Deled 3d

Of course, I always recommend Blender. It takes a little while to learn, but it is well worth it. It comes with a DirectX export that will work for DBpro that will export animations, textures, etc. And I built a script that will export DirectX specifically for DBC - animations, textures, etc.

Here's a link to the Blender main site.

Enjoy your day.

Thanks, Latch. I have both Deled and Blender, but only got around to using them today (well, not Blender yet!). Deled seems easy enough to use, except I don't know how to texture the models. the help files are no help when it comes to this either! however, until i figure this out, do textured deled models (exported as direct x) keep their textures when loaded into DBC?

Well, as far as Blender goes, I could almost feel a big black question mark hovering over my head as soon as i saw the interface. i had a few clicks, couldn't figure it out and it has been removed from my computer, as it seems far too complex to learn! and also just found out that textured deled models don't export to DB as textured, just blank. so, back to blender, i suppose, and i'll look for tutorials, i guess. ho hum...

BTW, Latch, do you have the script that will export textures to DBC?

Did they give any clues as to why they didn't work? Perhaps all you need is a new video card.

giving up too fast is your problem sonic, its not a click and play world with designing 3d objects in most packages. Blender has a very steep learning curve as its layout and process is a little different to others, ok a lot!.

The easiest 3d application if your very new is DOGA L1 / DOGA L2 / DOGA L3
start with this perhaps and from there once you get comfortable move on to another.
Milkshape is pretty much straight forward.
3d canvas is easy because its well documented.
etc.etc.

i know that! it's just that blender is more complex than all the other modelling programs i've seen put together!

you're right. i do need a new video card. the interface of 3DWS is just white, when there should be a black background with grid lines, and CS4 works fine, except it crashes every time I click on one of the menu labels at the top of the interface.

i had an awful time upgrading my video card recently, i found a new driver for it, and so i uninstalled/deleted the old driver. this allowed 3DWS to work correctly, but DB didn't work. when i realised that i had deleted the old driver without installing the new one, i installed the new one straight away. this allowed DB to work, but made 3DWS go back to what it was before: a blank interface. and cartography shop still doesn't work! do you think i'll still have this problem with cartography shop if i were to buy the full version? after a browse of the other forums, i found out i am not the first person this has happened to.

If I was you I wouldn't buy anything else for the computer till I get a new video card. Maybe you can convince Santa to bring you one.

3DWS doesn't work for me unless I turn off my video acceleration. Then it works great.

Cash, u have just made me very happy! I turned off the video acceleration, and 3DWS works great! this causes DB to crash, though. but so what? i'll just turn the video acceleration up again when i'm finished in 3DWS, and DB will work again! YAY!

Cartography Shop 4 also works fine! I'm going to stop whining now. World building? It's official: I'm gonna do it! Thanks for your help and advice!

That's great, Sonic!

In case you ever decide to use Deled:

You have to change the materials inside the program to include textures that are bitmaps instead of jpegs and are named in the 8.3 format (8 characters for the file name and a 3 char extension ex: wall.bmp). You also would have to have the bitmap textures in the same directory that your model is saved to.

Blender might be a lot to bite off and chew just yet. Like indi wrote:

But if one put the time and patience into learning it, it has some truly amzing features... it even has a built in physics engine (ODE I believe) and a game creator...

Enjoy your day.

yes, i noticed about the game creator, which seems to be a cool thing. i just don't have th time and patience to put into blender at the moment, as i'm very busy at work and getting ready for Christmas.

wall.bmp? is that 8.3? anyway, i see what u mean. i'll have a look at deled again as well. and also, i will look at getting a new video card, to avoid the inconvenience of constantly switching the acceleration on/off.

@Sonic 91 Software -

Glad that it works for you It's annoying having to switch the acceleration on and off for DBP to work, but at least there's a way to make it work.

To clarify, I meant between 1 and 8 chars, but no more that 8 with a 3 char extension.

Enjoy your day.

thanks. i should've worked that out. when it comes to noticing the obvious, i'm not the brightest spark. i'm not the kind of person you'd refer to as an intellectual. 10 years ago, maybe.
