I see a lot of people discussing a^2 + b^2 etc etc.. what does the ^ mean and why is it used?

Yeah, no one can be bothered going through the character map to find the little 2's and stuff.

Oh, and 6^2 would also be pronounced "6 squared", in addition to "6 to the power of 2".
