Anyone got tips on learning this, and building up speed with it? Cuz my left hand is sloppy when moving this fast...I started out slow, but it doesn't seem like its helping too much.

sweep picking....omg so hard to do...
It is probably the hardest thing to do on guitar(at least for me..)
to begin....
for me it is easiest to do it on the bottom(thinnest) string
and to make a something that doesn't sound too bad try just doing index and middle finger ups and downs(frets right beside each other) and try going up and down on frets 2 and 3. Also, make sure to kind of pop the string when you release it or it may not sound right
but well that's about all I can teach since it's the only thing I can do...

whats so hard about sweep picking? It's just a controlled strum. I use it a lot when doing spanish leads, its a neat trick compared to individually alt picking each note haha

keep up the work benny, your style of music will love you for learning it hows the band going by the way? been a while since i heard anything from them

Its going pretty good. We have two upcoming shows in about a week. We have one on Dec. 16th,and one on Dec. 22nd,we may be headlining at the dec. 22nd show,so that makes me happy. We also may enter a battle of the bands,in which the prize is 16 hours of free recording time,so that'll be great if we win. Sweep picking isn't really hard,it just takes getting used to. I'm somewhat used to it now,I'm just building up my speed and precision with my left hand at the moment. I'm pretty much halfway to where I wanna be with sweep picking.

SIXTEEN HOURS FREE?! Wow, what studio? That's one hell of a prize, for studios around here thats nearly one grand worth of studio time! I hope you win that one, it'll help out your musical progression as well once you've recorded in a studio.

Quote: "whats so hard about sweep picking?"

Depends on the speed and the amount of strings that you're doing it across, and also the chord you base it on. If you don't think it's hard, I would like to hear some 6 string sweep picking at a decent speed.

Sweep picking is a bit over rated. It's not that hard, and it's not that good unless you're clever enough to do something good with it, like Jason Becker. It's a good technique to learn though, I find it makes my fingers more flexible.

I started doing 3 stringed ones, which I still like. I can do 5 strings now, haven't really bothered to learn any 6 string ones.

lol...*imagines sweep picking on a 12 string, across 6 string "sets"*
I'm not very good, can barely do any 2 string stuff across no more than 2 frets...

edit:
on the topic of guitars... can anyone do the finger tapping method of harmonics? like where you pick a string normally and then you "tap" the string(above a pickup) and it makes a cool sounding harmonic

yes, you just gotta be very gentle when you tap a harmonic or you won't get one.

tap a string above the pickup for a harmonic? you mean like an artificial harmonic?

There are the ones where you just hold your finger over a fret, and a similar one where it's basically you do a note, then you can tap the fret an octave above (or whetever you want, as long as it has a harmonic). Then there's the aritificial harmonic, or pinch harmonic, where you touch the string with the end of your thumb after picking it, which makes a the screaming noise, very popular in most DragonForce tunes (they were playing in my town tonight... didn't go lol)

I don't know of any others...

theirs another one that sounds slightly similar to artificail
to do it just pick normally but hold the pick really tight(almost hitting the string with the tip of your thumb); also that only works at certain places on the string(like artificial harmonic)
I'm not sure what it's called..my dad taught it to me..

Pinch harmonic,Natural Harmonic, and Artificial harmonic. I only know the first 2. A pinch harmonic is where you take the pic and above a pickup and strum it,but you wanna hit the string with your finger right after you hit the string. I use pinch harmonics quite often, cuz natrual harmonics aren't that flexible. Natural harmonics are on 3rd,5th,7th,9th and 12th frets(or something like that). If anyone can explain what artifical harmonic is,I'd be quite happy

artificial harmonic is like pinch execpt you pick normal and then barely(and quickly) tap your finger above a pickup

a really cool thing to do that's kindof harmonics is to use a natural harmonic on fret 1 on the thicker strings..gives it a palm muted sound, yet leaves your right hand to do easy, fast up and down picking(or alternate or whatever..)
