For some reason, my computer has obtained a habit of not wanting to turn off. I run Windows XP SP 2. When I shut down my computer, my computer goes to the blue screen that says "Windows is Shutting off" but then my computer never turns off. Does anybody know whats wrong? My fan has also been acting up lately, maybe my computer is overheating or something. Any help?

Thanks

technical answer: you're PSU has probably given up and ACPI no longer works properly

idiot proof answer: you've been infected with

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, 512MB DDR2 667MHz, ATi Radeon X1900 XT 256MB PCI-E, Windows Vista Business / XP Professional SP2

Does it restart at the point where it would usually shut down? I had this problem with my old PC after installing a PCI card. After I removed it I had no problems.

I was going to say its the shutdown patch from service pack 1 but your beyond that.
check out any rogue processes you might have running that is stalling the shutdown sequence.

Reinstall all of your hardware drivers even for your printer etc. Then install an anti-spyware solution to ensure nothing is staying in memory unwanted.

if you go that route.

make a backup before you format.
make a disc with virus and spyware on hand before you connect the machine to the net.

That is probably the least helpful answer I've ever seen. I really doubt that his PSU has given up, he would more than likely see other symptoms.

its raven-esque, best to take with salt and humour if you havent worked it out by now.
6 years of raven-isms taught me that.

It's more likely that the PSU doesn't have enough power. I believe this was the cause of the same problem with me.

What did you do to fix it?

i opened up my computer, and cleaned out all the dust. I think it was overheating due to the dust.

When my PC turns off, if it's been running for more than ten minutes it makes a long beep, a short beep, a long beep, a short beep, a long beep and finally a very short beep before it shuts off. I think it's a mild motherboard-PSU incompatabillity because the beeps start when the CPU fan stops.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...
