Hi all,
I was lucky enough to get a video ipod from Santa (even though I recently said I'd never get an ipod and a more sane person would wait a few weeks for Mac World but hey ho).

Anyway, I had to upgrade to iTunes 7 and I can import music and stick it on my pod just fine. My problem is I've converted a file to mp4 using Handbrake but it won't import into iTunes. I drag it to the window and the little green '+' sign pops-up but when I let go of the mouse button the symbol disappears and nothing happens. I've tried this with a range of files from a range of sources. The files play fine in quicktime but I can't import to iTunes.

I've done my fair share of googling and have just had a look on the Apple forums and it looks like it's quite a common problem that can't be solved so I think I'll just have to wait for Apple to release an update of some kind of update.

Reason I'm posting here is there's a lot of people that know a lot more about macs than me so if anyone's had the same problem and found a work-around I'm all ears. I've read on a forum something to do with quicktime pro but I don't have this and it might not be the same problem I'm haivng.

Just to clarify a few things, I'm using a ppc g4 ibook, with itunes v.7 (latest version as of Monday) and I can't use an earlier version because the ipod (5.5gen 80gb) needs v.7 of iTunes.

It would appear I've been bitten by the coding bug yet again...

ffmpeg is a great program that will convert it. mostly its a codec issue.
usually you would convert it to h264 Quicktime and that should work ok.

if you wanted to do it with the best possible quality, dump it to a raw uncompressed format and then allow conversion from the larger file.

Thanks for the info Indi.

Turns out once I'd updated to OS X 10.4.8 and Quicktime 7.1.3 the files can be imported no problem. Live and learn.

DVD shrink will actually shrink the DVD content to half its size so it will fit onto 4.7 gig disks.
It lends itself to nero's DLL that will burn it later on but it will shrink it as well.

try a program called SUPER its a front end gui to ffmpeg for windows.

visit www.doom9.org and videohelp.com
they really are the definitive places to read about this kind of content for windows users.

I found something called Videora ipod converter! Its a pretty okay converter for being free but it takes along time and well i found that there was a problem with the video sound at a certain point in the converted movie - it basically goes mute for 10 minutes in the movie - so i guess my search isnt done yet... Ill get back to you guys if i do find something worthwhile to be used. Thanks indi for helping me though, i greatly appreciate it

Super is a front end for FFMPEG for windows.
GUI4 FFMEPG is another one for windows users.
check out those two sites i mentioned above.

by law your not allowed to download the whole FFMPEG in one go.
you have to download some components of the codecs in other areas.
At least thats the way its set up in the MAC OSX environment.

Yeah I made the animation years ago and slowly added to it.
