Since September I've been studying music technology alongside my main degree at university (Basically we have to choose a humanities or languages suject to study, and music tech is by far the most interesting ) We've been learning to use Reason and Cubase, and my first composition has to be handed in soon. It would be really great if I could get some feedback from you on my song and how it can be improved. I have several ideas on what's wrong with it, but I'd like to hear what your opinions are first

Sorry about the huge file size (25MB .wav) I downloaded 'River Past' converter, but it doesn't do anything when I click on convert :-s . I'm trying to find something to convert it so when I do I'll reupload it.

Thanks,

leaving aside the fact that the hosting server cant stream up the file as fast is it needs to...

some observations:
-bass drum fill-ins faster than 16th notes is never a good idea, in any genre of music
-each of the individual loop elements don't meld together tonally. Its like the keys, the drums, the guitar, the other pieces, are all so vastly different that it becomes more "noisy" than "musical", if you follow. Maybe spend time finding loop sections from the diff categories that sound like the belong together, and experiment from there.
-maybe try and not make each new successive part's entrance so predictable, over the course of time. The fact that have a base keyboard loop basically acting as the metronome, and then you introduce new elements on a regular interval, won't keep the listener's mind guessing. This leads to listener boredom.

I am not a loop/electro expert, but I am a musician, so these are just mho's. Seek the advice of a seasoned veteran in these arts - I recommend Mr. Fallout of course.

good luck

Thanks for the feedback CattleRustler.

I know exactly what you mean with the parts not fitting together well...I was thinking of replacing the guitar loop which comes in about 1:22 with a 'hand-written' piece, in which I'll also be able to add more variance etc. I'm constantly tweaking settings to try and get it to sound nicer, but a lot of the parts just seem off beat with another giving a slightly awkward sound....

any other feedback would be great!

Ok...
I've made some major changes to it (actually I pretty much scrapped everything apart from the strings and started fresh lol)
I'm not using any of the Reason sample loops now either, I put every note in by hand using my mouse
It's not finished (it comes to an abrupt end), but if anyone can download it and give me any feedack that would be great!

Audacity is good too. I think you have to hook in the "lame" mp3 converter but its not too much trouble. And the wave editing features are good to have at hand. I use Sonar Home Studio from cakewalk but that costs a few bucks.

New track: 1000% improved! Great work.
