Update 5th January - The Gallery is no longer in Beta, it is now LIVE. So still feel free to post images there, but make sure they are high quality and of actual DB/FPSC games, etc. Thanks.

Hi all,

Today we've released the public beta of our new TGC Screenshot Gallery. This gallery allows you to upload screenshots (or concept art) of your games (*) to our web site.

If we like what we see, we'll approve the image and it'll go into rotation on all of our main sites + into the forum.

There are options to add extra details about the game such as links to a TGC forum thread, or YouTube video, and people can filter / sort / rate everything.

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=gallery

Post your findings here. If it dies on you somehow, tell me please. If you've got a feature suggestion, here is the place to request it.

Note that images uploaded need to be approved before they'll appear in the Gallery, even in this beta state. But I will be doing that on a regular basis over the coming days, and the system emails you when your image is up there. Also note that I track who uploads what, so if you stick a giant dick image on there, even though its a beta, I'll consider that foul play and noob slap you accordingly

Cheers,

Rich

* Just to clarify, when the Gallery is live for real, we'll consider shots of games made with any TGC sold product as valid - i.e. DBPro, FPSC, PlayBasic, etc.

Probably not. But then again, you would have to actually develop something to warrant that. You wouldn't qualify. And John Y, spell check please.

@Rich -
The gallery looks good. Very interesting game pictures posted so far. I'll upload a couple dramatic ones.

Good idea Rich, it's what this site needs.

I've uploaded a picture...

That's a rather rude thing to say.

Uploaded a bunch of pics, used some random characters, etc. Just waiting to see if the info is filled out properly when the pics are accepted.

I know it's a longshot, but it would be cool if there was some AJAX thrown in there. For example when you rate the picture, it probably shouldn't refresh the whole page

As long as you could rate stuff anonymously

Hi guys,

Ok I just approved a whole bunch of screenies so it's filling up nicely. Sorry to the uploader whos image I accidentally rejected

I do log who rates what, but I don't want to disclose this, it goes against what I feel is considered privacy. I could add a tickbox option next to the vote drop-down saying 'Allow others to see my vote' - and default it to 'off'.

I'm not overly concerned about the page refresh when you rate an image I need to add in a few more little tweaks, and after some more testing I'll release it.

Can people from non-English speaking countries please try entering some of your local characters please? (i.e. Germans, enter some German, French, Spanish, etc) - I'd like to ensure it retains the encoding correctly.

I just uploaded a pic and noticed that there is no "my pictures" list anywhere (or is there one but I couldn't see it for some reason?)
Also, it would be nice to be able to edit the descriptions (or do I have to wait for approval before I can?). I remembered you asked for translations to other languages on the descriptions only after I already sent it all.
edit: It would also be nice to be able to comment on someone else's picture.
edit: Oi! It doesn't count unique views! (keep pressing F5 and the views count just keeps growing) >_<

This isn't a real big problem, but if You don't agree to the terms and conditions, then it resets your path to the image. Luckily though, everthing else stays there.

Like 90% of the pictures on there are not of DBPro games but of other stuff like car shows, published games, and even someone's cat. I thought these things needed to be approved before being displayed?

[EDIT] Ah nevermind, didn't see the invite to post anything. I guess I'm too serious 2am in the morning.

I'm not a real programmer but I play one with DBPro!

Yeah there's nothing I can do about this, sorry - just the way browsers file upload form elements work (they have no 'value' that can be set).

TKF15H - I'm not massively worried about having no 'My Pictures' option, because really the Gallery is where you post your final, really gorgeous finished images. A 'My Pictures' section implies to me an area where you can just store and upload whatever images you like, which is more akin along the lines of Johns 'Dev Diaries' comment, i.e. not really the purpose of the Gallery, but something we want to do eventually. As for the view count I know, it's on my todo list.

I'm in two minds over letting people comment on screen shots, and am yet to decide if it's a good idea or not. This isn't the place to solicit comments on the image, it's the place to pimp finished games. But I'm open to opinions on this.

I think that's kind of what the Forum is for. Comments that is. As you say, the Gallery is more a best of the best image show off.

This is a fantastic system! I have a few suggestions on added functionality, I'm not sure how "do-able" they are, but I'll share my ideas anyway

It would be nice to know the forum name of the unloader, maybe even include their forum icon next to their name. That would help provide a sense of ownership with the artwork and would convince people that it's a good way of getting some project recognition.

A section showing the highest rated images would be nice, like a "hall of fame" which would give people some friendly competition.

Commenting on the screenshots isn't really necessary as the forum provides all the discussion elements for peoples projects.

Let's say I upload 5 screenshots of the same project. I would like to be able to link all of these images so that if a member is viewing 1 there are links or even thumbnails of the other images uploaded from the same project.

maybe a "flag as offensive" button for when the system becomes massively popular.

And finally, just for fun. Instead of "Awesome", have a 6 star rating equal "Ownage!"

Just a little comment - the Upload Screen Shots button looks too much like a banner or advert in the body of the page, and as such I had a blind spot to it for a while, even when I was looking for it. It's such a tiny niggle and I'm sure it didn't affect most people though, but I've trained myself to be blind to all banner/ads

It's a nice feature though, especially if you add the linkage to a thread thing you mentioned.

Doesn't seem to work for the image title (tried French and German ones). It says that the image title is too long. It's ok with those characters in the description field, though.

As you can see I filled it with test images of commercial games, so do the same if you like. Or post real screenies of your work, or some snaps from a digital camera - whatever really - just test the system to death please

You don't have to have a forum account to be able to upload to the Gallery though. I also don't want people to feel like they have to upload pictures of games *they* have made. For example when it goes live I would love to see people upload screen shots from any DB/DBPro game they enjoy playing. So putting a forum name with the image might give the wrong impression. I'll think about it though.

Quote: "A section showing the highest rated images would be nice, like a "hall of fame" which would give people some friendly competition."

Agreed, I'll add this.

Quote: "Let's say I upload 5 screenshots of the same project. I would like to be able to link all of these images so that if a member is viewing 1 there are links or even thumbnails of the other images uploaded from the same project."

Yes I think this is a key point. I had already talked to a few testers about perhaps being able to create a 'category' when you upload, and placing images into the category you created. Which would cover this.

Quote: "maybe a "flag as offensive" button for when the system becomes massively popular."

No need, images don't show on the site until TGC staff approve them. If they're offensive we'll reject them and if they're really offensive delete your user account

Thanks for the comments all - keep 'em coming, I am taking note of most of these for future additions.

Cheers,

Rich

How about a feature where you click the stars and it will take you to a bar graph or some sort of graph that will show you what all the users rated it.

Perhaps you could change the code a little so that it checks to see if the user agrees to your terms and conditions before uploading. I tried to upload an image that was above the 2Mb limit to test functionality and it was a little annoying to have to wait for a couple of minutes before finding out that I hadn't agreed.

Admittedly, I wouldn't ordinarily be uploading a file that was above the maximum file size but uploading one that was close to it would still involve a lengthy-ish wait that would prove very frustrating if you didn't click the checkbox.

This is cool, i like the halo screen shots, wishes i had an xbox

I think you really need make it tell people how many people rated it. One vote on awsome is nothing, its probably the pearson who uploaded but if it was 50 votes for awsome means it must be great! Just add a vote count next to the stars

Alex

It does. Hover over the vote stars, look at the tool tip.

I could add some JavaScript to do this, but that is all. Those who browse with it disabled (or blocked) are still at the mercy of how form uploads work. Same happens for any form element, i.e. if you leave the title blank, etc, the upload is lost.

Rich, this is really cool! I don't know if anyone has suggested this yet, but perhaps integrating this into the user's profile would be pretty cool. That way you could click on a user's profile and look at the work that he/she has done so far etc.
