Just loaded up Gears of War for my 360 a few dqays ago (christmas), and all I can say is wow, im really surprised it runs so consistently!

In the average scene you'll find every shader you can think of put on all of the models in the world, including HDR. You can find reflections everywhere, even on the smallest bricks that become wet. The entire thing is packed with better image quality than any of the xbox 1 game videos could've hoped to be.

Besides that, its got tonnes of hi-def monsters running around shooting up the place, and the feel of the game is amazing. The only downside I see with the game at all is that on the rare occasion you'll run for cover to a wall you didnt want to run to, due to pressing A by mistake.

On the flip side, whats with the wii? I understand its supposed to be aimed at giving a new take on gaming, as opposed to just upping the graphics, and I know, graphics are a small part of the game, but the wii sports models are terrible (IMO)!. I can see they were going for a cartoonish effect, but really, the head is a sphere, the body is a sphere elongated, and the legs are hi poly cylinders. Id understand if its just wii sports, but rayman, zelda, red steel, all blockbusting games, are still packed with low poly, low detail models. Call of Duty 3? I didnt see any light mapping in that thing at all :S.

Just thought Id vent that... its pretty sweet.

Indeed, the wii has Horrible graphics. I love the fact that its fun, but they really got to kick them up at least a little! And I'm sure as time passes developers will spend a little more time on making the games on it purty.

The Wii has horrible graphics now? I don't think they're the best but they're far from horrible.

Funny. They don't look that good when you see them on the TV, but looking at them when you play them they're alright

And yet somehow the Wii is much more fun than any of the other consoles I've ever played. Ever since I got it I haven't even touched my 360 and I have GoW and tons of other great games. I'm sure once I beat Zelda I'll go back and play some more, but for now I'm pretty much obsessed, lol.

Trust me, you will. As soon as I finished zelda, I really didnt use my wii much more. Unfortunatly, as of now thats the only real in depth game.

Yet more proof that good graphics means bugger all when it comes to fun.

Maybe I'm the only one who got bored with Wii Sports after a few hours? It's only fun when you're playing bowling with a bunch of others--- but single player is really lacking.

Would have been nice to use the online play with your friends.

@Jeku

Exactly! Wii sports was a great way to get my family into it, but now I wouldn't even think of playing it unless someone else wanted to have a go at tennis. I can't imagine how much more playtime it could have had if there was an online "tournament" system to speak of.

I've got a Wii but I'm somewhat concerned with its the long-term popularity, I'm afraid.

It's great fun and Zelda is an awesome game, and beautiful too: but the latter in a very last-gen sort of way. I know TP is in effect a souped up GameCube game, but I'm beginning to worry that all we'll ever see is souped up GameCube games - there certainly hasn't been released a Wii game that, other than the control, couldn't have been done on the GC _or_ doesn't look better on the original xbox!

I know that the Wii is truncing the 360 and ps3 in sales terms, and being a Nitty fanboy myself, this is something that really makes me happy (after the GC debacle). But the problem is console generations must last 5 years and I begin to doubt if, halfway through that, the Wii games will be looking so old hat as to turn players and developers away.

Trust me, I'm the first person to say that graphics are of limited importance - certainly to me. But they are still the "face" of any audio-visual experience. It's pure blinkered optimism to say otherwise - would the LOTR trilogy have done so well had the visuals looked like crap? As for the new Star Wars trilogy... it only did as well as it did because of the looks (it certainly wasn't the story that sold it).

So, I'll go out on a limb here and say that, Wii will do great in the first year and a half, pretty well from there to 2.5 years, and then tail off to a distant 3rd place in the twilight years of this generation...

... unless there is a chip hidden in the Wii somewhere that we know nothing about.

I have vague plans for World Domination

I was disappointed slightly with the graphics of the Wii slightly, I saw the road in NFS: Carbon and those seriously need a higher res texture, I would have thought a Wii would contain more power than my comp, but then I suppose it does, but the games don't really show that, but give it a little while and I predict that the graphics will improve once developers discover how, look at the Gamecube, it started with some low quality games, but it showed how good it was. Nintendo is behind with graphics, but always have been ahead with Gameplay. IMO the best controllers were the Nintendo ones, I can aim better with Splinter Cell than on the PS2, the buttons are all in convenient places and you don't get a hand strain making the game experience the best despite any of the graphics, I assume the exact same thing for the Wii, where as Sony gave out the best role play based and sports/racing games, the Xbox gave all of the bloodiest shooters And it may be the same for this generation.

Thing is, as gorgeous as the graphics are in GoW, the actual game lasts maybe 3 hours from beginning to end, not exactly in depth, or worth £50.

I'm holding out for the games developers actually want to make for the Wii, the possibilities are there, it's just a matter of time.

slightly off-topic, but anyone know if it's possible to make homebrew for the Wii?

Yah but the system's only been out for what--- 5 or 6 weeks? Remember Halo was an Xbox launch title, and it looked *crap* compared to Xbox games that were released years later (Splinter Cell CT is just amazing looking). Give it some time--- developers will find ways to make the games look amazing

I dunno, I guess that depends how you play it. I don't run and gun through every chapter, but I like to take my time and look at all the pretty detail. I got GOW for Christmas (second time owning it) and am playing through the harder difficulty levels, and it's tough. The gameplay is nothing short of amazing.

Plus, online is supposed to be 10x better than single-player.

Sometimes I'm that way too-- playing retro on the Wii or 360 instead of modern games. But sometimes I ask myself why those games are fun when many of them are just.... not. Take Pacman--- I almost bought it on Xbox Live Arcade-- the original arcade version. But after playing it again realized that it's just *not* fun anymore. I know that's obviously just an opinion thrown into the wind, but some of those retro games seriously lack the fun factor, but we look at them through rose-coloured glasses.

Maybe it's because we haven't noticed the development of our immunity to such doses of adrenalin.

remember re4 anyone? Remember how beautiful it looked on the gamecube? Well lets just say, re5 is coming out. It will most definitely push the wii to its limits.

I don't go that far, but that's because it's before my time, I start out as a kid with an Amiga 500 and a Master system then the megadrive, those are the classics I fell in love with and return to.

Gameplay needs a major return I must agree, which is why Nintendo score in my book, we may not get the 'classic' game play some of us long for, but the games for their consoles and their own games are addictive. I don't care that Zelda is the same story over and over again, the style is brilliant...Same for Sega and Atari, shame they stopped making consoles.

I'd say blitzing through the game it still takes about an hour per act (cept the final one)... in total you're looking at 4-5hrs but yeah this is still short for £50.

This said while I've only taken a small amount of time going through the game once, in single player. Lots more hours have been spent playing it in co-op, getting COG tags, etc. I've got almost all of the achiements now, and while my lass is bored of the game in long bursts. I still have alot of fun replaying the story over and over again.

Online gameplay just expands this, because it is just as fun as Halo, Counter-Strike or such.

For many games, I'd agree. I tend to download the trials and for some games that's enough. Some of the classic games though (like Street Fighter 2 Hyper Force) are worth purchasing, especially given they only cost a few quid... unlike RoboBlitz which is an entire Microsoft Points card (£15).

As far as the Wii goes, I have a feeling that it'll have a different development segment to the GameCube.
It's obvious that some games on the NGC were very well developed and it was obvious the development team were trying their best to get the game to be great on the console.

FF:CC, RE4, and MGS:TS for example were very good graphically. I believe that the next generation versions on the Wii will also prove to be quite gorgeous, despite it being quite a fair bit less capable than the competition.

Other games that are ported however, only time will tell if the effort will eventually be put in. Right now, it's appearing to be an after thought console to games like the NGC was. They need the support of the developers to keep the popularity alive now.

RE5 - Not a Wii title, Ps3 and 360.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles - Wii title, looks frickin' awesome.

Anyone else played Elebits? Because it is the Wii's sleep hit.
