This hasn't been until very recently a subject I've cared much about, because not really had a handset that I've liked the look of which also has the features to play games.

Got a new handset for christmas though, which I love and has lots of crazy new toys for me to play with.
Digital Camera and Video Camera + Zoom, Media Player, Internet (not just crappy WAP), and all important 3D!

I had tinkered a few months back with J2ME but given I only got to test on a real phone (not just the emulator) on a few rare occassions my interest kinda disappeared. Now I've got my own again I've wanted to fill it with cool games, cept they're all a bit pricey (£5 for Pac-man FGS!) . Plus none seem to provide demos, so not quite sure if wasting a good hour or two worth of talk time credit is worth what you're getting.

So this has sparked my interest again in development for myself. The last 24hrs I've been downloading lots of cool things, mostly the SonyEricsson SDK and benchmarking tools.
Was pleased with myself earlier tonight when I saw "Hello World" spinning on a cube...

Just wondered if anyone else here has ever done mobile game dev (except Kentaree who does it for a living ), and what experiences have you had doing it? Any tips you can give me?

I'm definately looking forward to making some stuff that utilises the 3D and Bluetooth/Internet Modem(160K) functionality of the phone

keeping in light with this company, they have a language other then java.

I reckon the piracy issues within mobile phones are a lot better when it comes to "per sale" units.
You will need to invest in a great sprite making package as most of the games are 2d bitmap variants.
I would love the time to invest but i cant yet.

Not sure if omegabasic is even supported by the developers.

I downloaded J2ME and set it up through Eclipse a few weeks ago. Have been porting WordTrix over--- slowly but surely. It's really not difficult if you understand Java

Unfortunately, the only phone that I have where I could play a game from my pc is my Verizon Chocolate, and Verizon has their own form of Java which is closed to public (Or something like if I have been reading around right). So for me, now game dev until Verizon lightens up (Like Sony and the PSP).

I am trying to download a demo of Omega Basic, but the download link just points me to a different website where I can download the Synergy IDE...any ideas where I can get a demo of Omega Basic from?

If you want to do mobile phone game dev, it is doable in 3D for us cheapskates, I never tried it because well I can't find my Symbian phone, which is annoying because it was pink and everybody loved me for having a pink phone, but hey.

Its call Mirrlicht, a mobile phone port of the irrlicht engine, it might be worth a shot as Irrlicht is easy as pie when you know the C++ structure and how to make a game.

So am I right in thinking Omega Basic is no more?

Correct, it's been sold to another development company.

Get the new DarkBasic Professional IDE for only $19.99/~£9.85

I tried Omega Basic a while ago, it honestly wasn't worth the effort. Most of the promised features weren't included, and it wasn't exactly great to use as the resulting code was often fairly slow.

That aside.. might check out Miirlict.
I've not been able to successfully run a SymbianOS (I'm running v9) .sis on my phone yet. Not sure why, so for the moment I'm stuck with the slower Java2 Mobile Edition and Mobile 3D Graphics.
Mine also supports Mascot v3, but still trying to find out information about that.

I know the implimentation of M3G I have (v1.0) uses OpenGL ES 1.0 so have some fairly useful functions available to me.

Been running SPMark Java 2006 Edition on my phone to find out what it's capable of.
Anyone else who can run it here's my ORB result so you can compare, need to get some credit to upload it.

I'm trying to put together a Whetstone and Dhrystone test suite for my mobile phone to test the performance properly. Not sure if coding in native will provide better performance, given I can't seem to run native executables atm.
