If a model is for non-commercial products only, then is it ok to use it in a game that will be distributed as freeware or for homeuse only

You got it. They just want you passing it on, like they did. Usually theres a whole slew of conditions so just make sure your following the authors wishes.

As long as people are not asked money for the game (the model is in) or as a model pack.

Although some people will ask for credit. Anyway read the licsense and unless it says you can don't upload it anywere else. Welcome the forums.

I'm also confused, so you can use a non commercial model in a game that will be distributed for download but not for purchase?

Yes.
Non-commercial/freeware models can be used in a game as long as you don't charge for it and,as Locrian posted earlier, you follow the terms of the license for the model.
