i was copying a DVD last night, when all of a sudden, all the fans and lights went off in my pc, there was no picture sent to the screen but the power led and the leds on the keyboard were still on (the psu fan also stopped)

i tried resetting the pc but it did nothing so i switched it off at the back and waited for a while and then switched it back on, all the lights and fans lit up and span for about half a second and then stopped, and again the power led and keyboard lights remained switched on. it just kept doing this constantly so i decided to open it up.

i tried the PSU in another computer and it works perfectly. i tried the motherboard with a different PSU and it did the same thing, fan spins for half a second then dies. power LED stays on.

all my drives and stuff work okay. so i presume this is a problem with my CPU, motherboard (i took the graphics card and ram out and it all still happens). i haven't had a chance to test the CPU in another board yet as i don't have a spare 478 board.

there is no visable burns or scorching on the board anywhere, but i can't see the problem being with the CPU... so do you think it would be time for a new motherboard? its only a cheapy ASRock one, it cost me about 25 quid, but the only socket 478 boards i can find reasonably priced with AGP support are also very cheap ASRocks...

i'm gutted to have my pc out of action, as i'm using a crappy old AMD Duron and my NVidea compo game was almost ready for demo!

what i want to know is if it is safe to assume its the motherboard and buy a new one.

PS. there are no beep codes from the speaker and the PSU fan does not spin.

Sounds like the mother board or power supply to me, but like you said, you already tested the power supply in another PC. I think it's safe to say you need a new motherboard.

If the PSU was not tested in another pc with the same set of internal components with the same electricity draw on the psu, you havent ruled out the psu at all. The only valid test is to get another PSU and slap it into the current pc that keeps stopping, and see if it works. The symptom you described has "power supply problem" written all over it. I would investigate that road first before exploring possible mobo issues. Also has a component gone south, like a mem stick or something else?

Have you tried different ram? Or tested the ram you currently have?

i've tried the board without ram totally, and the problem still occurs. i'm taking it all to a shop today so he can test things properly hopefully

thanks =)

did you get back the old board?
did they say/show you what exactly went dead?

the shop told me that the RAM, CPU, GPU and board were all blown

but the guy looked dodgy

so i bought a new motherboard.
worked like new.

i'm not sure what was wrong with the old board, i cannot find any scorch marks or anything on it, but a friend of mine who owns a computer shop says that it was probably the ACPI power managment by the way that the fans spinned for a second and then died but the power light remained on.

bring the old board to your friend and ask him to test.
why wouldnt you have done that first, before visiting "dodgy" shop?
