That's the one...

I'm surprised it's still online actually!
John Y was very kindly hosting it for free, but apparently his hosting service finished at around August last year

Oh well, I have it all backed up locally if anyone wants the data out of it?

[EDIT] Oh, and it's horribly out of date - I think the last version it kept up with was 5.9

I easily supplied the link in answer to the question because I keep it as a reference link on a side-screen when I read the forums, and otherwise use it. If it is soon to vanish from the web then I would certainly like a way to get a copy. You obviously put plenty of work into it.

Another link that I frequently use when reading the forum is a London Slang dictionary, so that I can figure out what some members who believe they speak English actually mean when they say that something is "pants" or that they are "skint".

Can't TGC give you a smidgen of space on this site to stash it? Given that TGC claims to hold, in addition to its ads and the like, over ONE MILLION forum messages spread across over 91K threads? You are a Mod, so you must have at least a little pull, for that volunteer effort alone. The concept of users/customers having to build a help file to supplement what should be provided with the sale of the program is disconcerting enough. For a user/customer to bust chops to create/improve a help file and then wait for donated space elsewhere from others to stash it is deplorable.

If TGC won't, or if you are hesistant to ask TGC to do so, I'll be glad to buy a site & space and donate it to the cause. Give me a couple URL names you like and I'll do it this weekend.

Jeff,
It's not that they can't give me the space, it's the hastle of giving me database access via MySQL...
I've asked Rich a couple times, but always the same answer.
But, as you can see, I already have the domain registered and setup...
I have darkbasichelp.com and tgchelp.com (and I asked Rich before registering them if it was ok that I used their names in the URLs )

John Y was (and still is) hosting it for free for me, but if there's still interest in it, I can quite happily get some more hosting else-where (John's should have run out about 4 months ago! ) for pretty cheap, and re-enable the submissions.
All I have to do is uncomment a block of code

I disabled the submission a long time ago when I was still trying to figure out my CMS (I have quite a nice one done up now) since it wasn't working too well for my 'Moderation' purposes on the site.
However, I'd be willing to conver the site over to a new design (had one planned for a LONG time) and a more stable system, if anyone likes (after 20th Jan)?

Also, if anyone's interested, here's the most recent complete dump of the database:
dbHelp backup - full DB - 29-9-05.zip

El Goorf,
There isn't actually anywhere on the site to submit tutorials or snippets (except for 'comments' on commands), but if I am going to convert it all over to a new system, I can very easily add it

I used to love filling in command info. Put it back up . It's pretty obvious that TGC will never really do their own docs.

Nick,
The one I use for jt0.org - Nothing special, but more than enough to handle it all. (I know, I know, Drupal rules all )

John,
Hmm, That's great! But... I need an apache server for certain things (.htaccess mostly), I don't suppose you can put the account on an apache server rather than an IIS one?

Sorry, I can't help you there. Perhaps you could do it with IIS, by playing in the control panel. You can setup password protected directories without a problem.

I'm more after 301 redirecting, unfortunatly.

It's easier for a user to type in "dbp.tgchelp.com/sync_on" rather than "dbp.tgchelp.com/?id=1234", and besides, google will index it better

I can think of a way to hack that with 404's

Jess - thats not 301's... That should be URL Rewriting. Surely IIS can do that!

Nick,
Sure it is - if someone tries to access /?id=sync_on, then the .htaccess would pick it up, throw a HTTP 301, and redirect to /sync_on which would then use a simple re-write rule to tell my php script that /sync_on means /?id=sync_on

That way, there's not a possibility of anyone actually getting the address /?id=sync_on to do anything other than point them at /sync_on

riiighhhtt... so you're using rewrites to "alias" things like /sync_on with /?id=sync_on... but you're also using redirects to send /?id=sync_on to /sync_on just in case someone puts in the wrong URL? Suppose that covers against Duplicate content!

That's exactly what it's for

But even if I didn't want to do the 301's, IIS doesn't support Re-writes from standard, it needs a new module installed. So without having access to the actual server myself, I can't have any sort of rewriting with IIS servers

Hence the need for an apache server
