is it possible to read and write data via a COM serial RS 232 port?

I want to make games interact with home-brewed hardware that uses a serial interface. I assume that there may be a way to treat a COM port rather like a file for sequential I/O. I am very new to DarkBASIC so any help greatly appreciated.

I think you would need a DLL written in C++. I'll post c++ code to handle this tomorrow, but I'm affraid i haven't tried including .dll's in DB, so I may have to play with it a little.
