Newcomers DBPro Corner / CD Protection Error

I recently purchased DarkBasic Pro and am unable to get it to run. I have an IBM ThinkPad laptop with an external HP CD/RW drive connected via a USB port. I was able to install DarkBasic and DirectX from the CD. When I click on the desktop icon to start the program I get an error message - Unable to find CD. I took out the CD and put it back in and got the Dark Basic start screen and was able to launch the program. When I try any operation, though, such as executing a piece of code, I get an error message - CD Protection Error.
I sent mail to the support folks and have not received an answer. Help would be appreciated.
