I know that DX10 is the standard direct x thats going to be used on vista, but what about DX9 and lower games?

Is there going to be any sort of backwards compatibility because from what i gather DX10 wont support DX9 or lower games, which would make every game that i own (and every game currently on the market) unplayable on the new system, surely that isnt going to happen is it?

All your games will run fine, because they provide a version of DX9 as well as DX10.

hmm....some peaple really need to know how DirectX is build.....

DirectX is THE programm with backward-compability......

Example:

You code a prog that uses DirectX7 und so you use perhaps the function

example_function_dx7()

Then you start your programm on a PC that has DirectX 8.1

And your prog calls the "example_function_dx7()" , maybe there is a "example_function_dx81()" but Dierct X8.1 includes ALL the functions form the lower Versions,so that your program actually USES THE SAME FUNCTION as if this PC has installed DirectX7.....

i suppose it's the same thing in DirectX 10....

How could you even get that impression - it even says that Vista has DX9 and DX10 on the flipping MS site

DX10 comes bundled with Vista
DX9 works with vista
just like DX8 and below worked with XP.
Just imagine vista as an extended version of XP with some pretty things in it. And DX10
