I don't think 24 is meant to be realistic, but rather to be dramatic and keep the viewers on edge as opposed to anything, if it was realistic Jack Bauer would be long dead, if they approached realism, I don't think they could hold the suspense as well as they do, which is the whole idea of it, that's why often or not they'll leave you on a cliff hanger at the end of an episode. Also remembering that if 24 were really realistic, then it would be boring "12:30, Jack Bauer takes a wizz, picks up a donut, sits down and reads Art of War whilst eating the donut, Edgar plays computer games looking behind her just in case Tony notices she isn't doing her work, and the dun dun dun! The coffee machine stops working, all this being done whilst George Mason is on a 3 hour journey to where the police found a nuclear lab"
The suspense would just fall.
