Something which I always like to challenge myself with is modelling environments in 3D. making an object in 3D takes a mixture of the right approach with the right methods, but environments and atmospheres are much more experimental and exciting. What a mean when i say environments and atmospheres is creating a scene which provides an emotion or feeling, these scenes can often be very simple, but the choice of camera and lighting can drastically alter how we perceive the image.

This forum is full of talented folk who's models have really inspired me, so i would like to take this opportunity to ( hopefully ) return some inspiration with a few examples of what I'm talking about

With the above image I wanted to do an underwater scene but I needed something to be the star of the show. The sea mines provided a great sense of danger, i buried the camera low to absorb the dreaded imagery of the mines. The air which we need to survive is being guarded by our own creations, the viewer is imprisoned within a vast ocean and time is running out!

The ocean is actually just a plain with a heavy bumpmap, see what i mean with simple things ?

Finally I wanted to play with temptation, i wanted to make the viewer hot and thirsty. The surroundings of the above image feature bleach white rocks and crumbling surfaces, we presume the sun is beating down and intensifying the bright white rock. The old rusting bucket holds the secrets of the well, all what you have to do is reach it!

I love doing images like this. The bucket is straightforward, just a simple Lathe/Revolve, most of the effort went into texturing.

I hope I've provided you with some ideas, and i would love to see some of your environmental images !

Those are both fantastic images, I love a good "immersive" picture.

Of the 2, I would say the first has far more atmosphere. But then the ocean is an easier subject for the viewer to "imagine" the atmosphere. You've still done a good job on the second one too, which is a toughie given the restrictive view you have.

Thats very impressive work! I haven't done any rendered scenes for years as all of my 3D stuff now is low poly count :-(
There are lots of people who can create 3D objects and place them together but getting the lighting, camera angles, lense and atmosphere right to create a lifelike environment is very difficult. Excellent stuff.

Cool

The second image kinda reminds me of an old wallpaper I had, this rendered black widow hiding on a shovel, kinda straightforward picture, but the little details and the care involved in making it made it special.

You should keep it up, maybe try something with more refraction, like coloured glass - can't go wrong with coloured glass for CG eyecandy. One of my fave recent images is this, I just appreciate how retro yet realistic it looks ... http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/38852/GelatoDOF.jpg

Hi folks, glad you like the images

@ CattleRustler, I'm using Cinema 4D and Photoshop. I usually like to add a few subtle effects after the final render, usually to adjust the contrast.
