I got a new computer from Dell a while ago and at first it was really annoying, but a nice program called the Dell De-Crapifier helped with that. The only thing that's really annoying me is that it comes setup to hide the file extensions. This makes working incredibly annoying since I can't just make a new text document and give it my own custom extension (i.e. .fpf) without Windows thinking that I really meant file.fpf.txt. In other words, ugh. I know that you can turn extensions back on, I'm just not sure how, could someone please assist me before I gouge my eyes out?

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > "Hide Extensions for known file types" - is this what you mean?

And btw, if you're using notepad to create that text document, you might need to set it to "All Files" as the type or enclose the name in ""s.

That's exactly what I meant thank you. Oh and I don't use notepad, I just right-click and then select new -> text document and then rename it. When the extensions were hidden I couldn't do that I had to use notepad and save as etc... But thanks it all works now.

MS defaulting to extensions hidden is really quite a bad idea and I find it really irrating when I use other peoples PC's.

Even just playing with darkbasic .dba and .dbpro files must be a nightmare if you can't see the extenstion as it will appear you have two files called the same.

Boo!

I'd agree with you there mostly. It's one of the first things I disable when I install Windows however when I was looking at my Grandad's PC he got so confused when I enabled them. Kept on wondering what this extra part to his files was and why they wouldn't open properly when he renamed them. Even after explaining them to him, he questioned why they were there and the way that he didn't put it there.

Indeed, but I learned that they're still in alphabetical order so I just clicked on the second one. Still I'm happy to have my extensions back.
