I remember the Ataris had pairs of "paddles" so the two ports of a 2600 could support 4 players. (WARLORDS - VIDEO OLYMPICS)

And this hone computer system could support 4 joysticks (BASKETBALL) or 8 paddles.

Console version:

Are there any modern consoles that have standard hardware which supports more than 2 identical controllers?

I'm unique, just like everybody else.

Nearly all modern consoles support at least 4 players, XBox360 and Wii support 4 wireless controllers, not sure about PS3. The Wii can support more than 4 if you plug in gamecube controllers aswell

I'm glad it took off - like multi-tap's for the PSX, but really remember the N64, Dreamcast, and Gamecube all had 4 ports as standard. I think at the time, the Dreamcast had it good, because right then Quake3 and Unreal:Tournament came out, and 4 player console deathmatches never played so well (yes I'm including Goldeneye in that statement).

It's probably my favourite aspect of the XBox these days, the fact that you can play arcade classics like Gauntlet with 4 players, play Halo with 4 players online, or play co-op Doom with 4 players split screen, now that is fun.

The SNES also had a multi-tap, used to use it for Super Bomberman and Micro-Machines.

Currently DirectX9/10, Xbox360, and Wii all support up to 4 controllers. The Playstation 3 supports upto 7, but god knows how crazy that would be on a single screen.

The pioneer of Co-operative play was Perfect Dark on the N64 where you could play as 2 people playing through the game in a number of modes. This said it was the Xbox that really made this feature popular to the point where it now plays a heavy part in most FPS/TPS games.

Rainbow Six Vegas is the first I've seen where you can have up to 4 players playing co-op story/missions on any form of connection.
Here we have a splitter, so two of us play on one console; then a friend brought round her 360 we connected it to the network which is also connected online. So we had her as the 3rd and some yank on Live as our 4th. You just can't really describe the experience you get from playing through specialised missions with that many players and across such a diverse setup.

What surprises me is despite the PC having such capabilities for going on a decade now, it's never been taken advantage of. I find that a huge shame personally. Split-screen on PC games is almost unheard of.. I doubt many here being able to name more than a handful of games capable of it.

Dumbo and Cool

I remember that multitap thing for the SNES, got mine at a car boot sale and even then it was expensive. But, all worth it for 4-player Bomberman .

Personally I always find games that allow co-op a lot more satisfying, it seems to keep you playing, and makes the game much more interesting when you have a buddy to play with. I never played Perfect Dark, but I played plenty like it, even completed Armourines on the PSX - but for me the turning point was Halo, the 2-player co-op mode made the game for me.

Good.

I'll make my decision on which console to buy for my kids based on other factors.

The Wii supports more depending on the game. It can support up to 4 wiimotes and 4 gamecube controllers. Bomberman 93 on the virtual console can be played by up to 5 players

I seem to remember the Micro Machines cartridge (Codemasters) for the Sega Megadrive having extra joypad sockets actually built into the cartridge so you didn't need a multi player adapter. Very clever idea, until Sega tried to sue them by saying they must have reverse engineering a Sega cartridge to design it

Yeah, I built built my own 4 way joystick adapter to go in the back of the Amiga/Atari ST about 10 years ago.

I used it to play Dyna Blasters (Which later got the name Bomberman!)
