I've noticed something very simple that could stop a lot of spam.
I don't know about other services, but Hotmail certainly doesn't do this. The majority of spam that still shows up in my inbox never has my actual email address in the "To" field. It's either something similar to mine or just completely random. Would it really be all that difficult to check that field and just dismiss the email if it doesn't match the REAL email address it was sent to?

That's the first message filter I make... if it's not to me it's deleted. The second message filter looks for "Fw" and "Fwd". I really dislike those "Hey this is funny I'll forward it to everybody I know!" people. I really hate family that never send a real message and just forward everything... "Sorry... I really don't care about you enough to talk to you like a human. fwd... fwd... fwd."

a couple of my friends think they are keeping contact by fowarding chain letters and lame jokes to me, well its sad and pathetic. Its nice to get handtyped emails or msn messages from your pals instead of the above.

Chain letters, lame jokes, and Spam, are three good reasons to have one biz email, one private, and one spam/lame jokes/chain letter receiving email account!

btw, have anyone heard of the new spam mails?

It tells you that you are the target of a proffesional assasin, and that you most pay $7500 not to get killed... Just pathetic!

On my e-mail i just have keyword filters and i keep adding to it. Each time a new e-mail makes it though the keyword filter i just add the most used word in that e-mail to my keyword filter...it cuts down about 95% of my spam.

When I teach people new to computers about email I always tell them. "Never run an .exe attachment... especially if its from family.". Its always those that you trust the most that mess up your computer.

It would certainly cut out a lot of spam to have the filter you suggest. The only problem is that most mailing lists just have the list name as the 'To' address to prevent people on the list harvesting every members email address. This includes mailing lists from legitimate sources such as ISP bulletins (e.g. notices of downtime), general notices from eBay or other online systems you are a member of, and any groups you subscribe to (e.g. any YahooGroups).
Of course, you could set up filters which allow these particular messages before the filter which deletes them but its extra work for you. You'll have to weigh up whether its worth it depending upon the amount of spam you receive. Personally, my bayesian filters do a fine job now I have trained them.

P.S. I am having a sale on assassinations at the moment and my rate has dropped to $5000.00 USD

It seems every day I get an e-mail saying "eSSEXUALY-EXXPLLICIT: breakingg newws" or something similar. What pisses me off is that the sender is "unknown", yet Hotmail has started putting it in my inbox.

I absolutely love the e-mails where some young girl from South Africa has just inherited millions of dollars from her father's death. However, she needs a 'trusted representative' from the US in order to get her money tax free and she'll give you a couple million in the process. All you have to do is give her all of your information on an "Identity Theft Questionnaire" form. Classic.

Come see the WIP!

I ignore spam emails and almost all of the titles that start with "fw".

I received this from "Mercado Livre", which is something like eBay here:

"Luiz Fernando,

Didn't you like your Christmas gift?

Sell it on Mercado Livre and buy what you want!!"

Scary..

easy way to avoid spam and scams is just to delete any email that is to long to be bothered reading with do i get a cookie?

btw, just upgrade to windows mail live, it has a better spam filter than hotmail and you can just report stuff and you'll never get it again, but seriously, do i get a cookie?!

@Zappo, yea that didn't occur to me. But the filter could be configured as you said.
