O.K. looking for suggestions as my headphones seem to be on their last legs and are starting to slowly die. What are your favourite headphone brands and which ones should I buy if I'm looking to spend 100-150$ CDN at a small electronics store that sells everything under the sun. Just want to know what you guys think is the best because I know you all have at least one pair of headphones hanging around the house somewhere. Right now I'm running with some panasonic surround sound headphones and their quite nice but like I said I'm looking for something new.

Have a look at Canalphones, they fit right inside your ear (no, not earbuds, but actually inside your ear canal) and block out almost all other sounds, so all you can hear is your high quality music

That sounds like it'd completely destroy your hearing.

Not audiophile quality but for the top of the line consumer quality the ugly KOSS PortaPro can not be beat.

Read the consumer reviews.

Dave, the idea is that once you have them in, they're exactly like earplugs - If you get a good seal, you can hear next to nothing. This means that you can then listen to your music at a much lower volume since you don't have to drown out external noises

Great quality sound, no external interference, and very small headphones

That KOSS lifetime waranty is a good thing.
I actually used it once.

Another consideration with the very comfortable PortaPros.
These headphones sound louder at lower volumes so you WILL save battery life.

Enough.

they're also very comfortable.

I dont trust earbud earplug headphones, as the sound pressure wont be able to escape the ear canal and after a while it can cause damaged hearing. I would look for something which allows sound pressure to filter away from your ears, but still holds a good seal. True audiophile headphones wont have enhanced bass or anything like that, but if you're just looking to listen to music, not mix or anything, you wont need anything nearly as expensive as pro studio headphones.

Saikoro, your ears get rid of pressure on their own even when they're blocked via the connection to the nasal and oral passages.

And at any rate, the pressure doesn't "build up" or anything like that, it simply changes from high to low like all speakers do... They're quite safe.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I got a good idea of where to start. No earbuds for me though, I cannot stand them. Something about them just... Aggh. No earbudish things for me.

spinneker,
CanalPhones aren't earbuds, though.
You can get different sizes, or ones that have a foam 'plug' on them, which means you squeeze them down, put them in your ear, and they expand to the size of your ear canal. There's no hard plastic pushing against your ear, the only thing is it's exaclty like wearing earplugs but with music coming from them.

But, each to their own, I guess

Uh huh I have never seen these canal phones here in Canada man.. Sorry. I like my around ear headphones I like the warm fuzziness of the headphone and the complete and total cut off from the outside world. Realize that I wear these things when i'm working on sound editing and stuff so I really like my nice and warm and socially uninviting headphones. Trust me, no one talks to the guy with headphones, no one. Thats a very good thing
