I'm not very patient, plus I've heard there's either no online gaming for the wii or the online play isn't that good. So I'm getting a graphics card so I need a suggestion. If it runs Direct X 10 that's a plus, but I need it to be able to run with good settings on F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty 2. Although I know those aren't very graphic intense compared to a lot of other games, those are the only ones I play at the moment and I'm playing with the lowest settings so I don't have extreme lag. I have $320, any suggestions?

normally i would say nVidia 8800 GTX hands down, but since you have a price, then i would say the 7900GT from newegg.com: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130034

but, im not sure if it is directx 10 compatible or not. i think it could run it even though it doesnt say...

Due to the completely different architechture of the dx10 pipeline an old dx9 card will not run a dx10 only game (at anything close to a playable framerate certainly), dx10 cards do play dx9 and older games at blazingly fast framerates though. The 7900 will not play dx10 games but is still a nice card, also anything in ATI's X1900 range will play the games you mentioned very capably.
If you want dx10 wait a little longer for the 8600 series from Nvidia or see what ATI comes up with.

AMD athlon 64 3000+, 1GB ddr400, 720GB total hdd, ati radeon X1900gt 256mb (pci-e) 17" tft(@1280x1024).

Thanks, I'd get that card, but it seems as though it's out of stock, I'll check into the ATI's X1900.

ATI X1900 is over $600 I advise getting something cheaper

for your price probably an NVIDIA lower than 7800GT or an ATI lower than X1600

Why does a gfx card have to be compatible with DX? I thought the whole point of the original creation of DX was to be software-based and therefore wouldn't require specific card to integrate its technology, like OGL or Glide.

phaelax what planet have you been on recently?

my x1900 (being the gt (ati's slightly lower end) although it's still bery powerful) was about $240 i think

edit: here's a nice card well in budget http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814103022

so long as you download the latest drivers and software from ATI's site that card should work like a dream

and here's my card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102034
only £200

and here's a "real" X1900 (the XT) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102067
$245
512mb version for $290:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102082

ps i'm assuming you're in the states, i'm not telepathic

well how else can you run DX on an old card that doesn't even mention DX? D3D doesn't need a specially compatible card (unless you want fancy pixel shaders), but it'll use the hardware acceleration if its there.

I remember when direct x was supposed to run with any video card, hence why it was partly created.
Now direct X is controlling what card you are supposed to have.
We have come back around full circle and lost the intended purpose of what the platform was trying to achieve in its infancy. Run on any card.
Funny how OpenGL still holds to a standard and Direct X isnt. One was spawned from military standards and the other is from a commerce driven company.

I've always liked OGL better in games anyway. Well, after Glide died anyway.
