Hey,

This is gonna sound really nooby, but trust, it isn't!

I know for a fact that .PNG image transparencies are much smoother than .DDS alphas. I also know that .PNG is compatible with FPSC as the trees in the free tree pack use .PNG textures.

Here's the thing, when I save an image with transparencies out of photoshop, into .PNG they appear totally transparent in FPSC (the entity is invisible. Now, when I look at the file extension, it doesn't read .PNG but ".mayaPNGimage"

Is it supposed to?! I did a search for .PNG plugins for Photoshop, but all I got was the plugin I already have.

So my question is, how do I get a .PNG texture into FPSC? Do I have to bake it to my model in Maya, then leave the texture field blank? Or is there another way, I could really do with help, as I'm working on foliage, and the leaves look too pixelated with a DDS alpha, if you can give me the solution you can have some free stuff.

If you are using Photoshop to save as a png, it should save as .png (mine does!). (I guess its a problem with Maya being your default png editor?? )
And then use it just as you would use any other texture on a model (with the texture=pathname/texturename.png)

In case you are having problems with the alphas, try changing the transparent=X field to 1,2,3,4 etc.

Good luck!

edit : leave the texture field blank only if you want to use more than 1 texture for the same entity.

Butter fingers,

Greetings. Natively, I'm not experiencing any problems saving to the .png format, from within Photoshop. WYSIWYG

I do not have any version of Maya installed on my computer. filya?

This is a big clue, that points to Maya as being the culprit. Have you tried replacing the .png plugin with a fresh DL from Adobe?

Did you do a search at Adobe.com for "Maya"? Anything?

Perhaps the plugin you now have was a default overwrite by Maya, when you installed the program? I'd research my file associations, within Maya.

I hope that this helps you in solving this setback.

Thanks,

Seth Black

Nope. No maya plain ole' (and cheap) milkshape for me.

Do you actually need plugins for png?? I dont recall using any plugins for it. I am sure Photoshop uses (opens, edits, saves) png files on its own!

You shouldn't need a plug in to save .png files.

no, it's part of a tree.

The leaf part needs to have a transparency, So I wanted to use a PNG, have smooth transparency on the leaves and solid bark. THing is, no matter what I do, whether I apply the texture through the FPE, or through the model, it is invisible in game (it appears fine in the editor), as a note, this happens to me in V1, Emptys and V1.04. What are the settings I need? Interlaced or not?!

And AAron G

As a point, making foliage decals is a killer for FPS. If you use a suspended (through script) active entity, you can get about 200-300 plant entities and still run 33fps (thats on a 1.8G with 256MB graphics card and 1G ram)

Targa does have transparency Butters, save it to 32bit.
Photoshop does have native png export so it's your maya exporter, export from the help menu (stupid place to put it) export transparent image.

@FredP,

Greetings. Actually, Photoshop does use a plugin file for the .png file format:

Quote: "Adobe\Photoshop 5.5\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats\png.8bi"

Thanks,
