You heard me! I'm creating a lab for a computer security class that's to demonstrate malware. We have a lab designated for screwing up machines just for this sort of thing. So I was thinking the best way to demonstrate the risks was to find a website that I know will infect a machine with either some popup advertiser or a hijacker and have several machines visit the website. I could also host a password-protected page on my server so I can ensure it will be there at the time of the lab and that noone will accidently view the page. After its installed and the affects become apparent, I'll have students run adaware or spysweeper or something.

So does anyone know of something I could use to infect the machines with (and where to get it)? Or if someone is handy with activeX or whatever I'd appreciate it.

You can get a list of websites distributing malware here:

http://stopbadware.org/home/reportsearch?searchtext=searchbadware

Or you could search for things that are likely to have malware like "free screensavers", "free [anything]", "warez, cracks, etc."

Hope it helps!

try and find "kernel88.exe" i had that, its a pain to get rid off cause it disables task manager and has to be killed using a program like process explorer, which can be found after a quick google search for "task manager replacments" i still havent found out how to turn task manager back on.

I went ahead and submitted a doc to my professor about the malware lab. Also, I made another suggestion about letting students use SubSeven trojan on each other. That would be a more controlled infection that's easily removable with current AV software or the SubSeven server program itself. It should show them the big difference between using AV and not having any at all. I remember prior to the Win2k launch, taking over my highschool lab with subseven. I owned the students! Once I figured out the IP assignment pattern for the room, picking a target was easy.(they all knew it was me, it was just all in good fun)

Tibialoader.exe has just been detected by AVG Free as a hackers back door. We think maybe its being used to DDOS attack Tibia game servers (if you have no firwall control) but who knows what it could be up to maybe it's taking people usernames/passwords too!

Downloading game cheats is a easy way to get infected....

Also try googling Netbus Pro you can take total control your friends PC with it There is a more stealthy hacker version and all you do is rename the .exe something interesting like OblivionCheat.exe and it's away. I was shocked when I learned this in my Internet Security lecture it's so easy to hack somone! (don't do it people it's illegal! Just use to test your security measures!)

I tried to be careful with this thread as to not get it locked. It is legitimate research for a computer security class. The worst I've ever done to someone through the use of a trojan whom I didn't know was leave them a text document on their desktop stating: "You've been hacked! haha, no not really, but you should fix your system's vulnerability, blah blah".

Hey Gator, email spoof yourself, its incredibly easy. (dunno if you can do it on gmail or hotmail due to some relay check thing)

Just as a side bit of information, a month or so ago my friend tracked down a virus on his systems to being IN his router. (I think it was a DLink) A firmware upgrade cleaned out the virus. After some internet research, he discovered that the virus was actually being sent out by WOW (his cable service). A similar issue happened to me when Time Warner was sending code red to customers. WOW won't say anything on the issue, but many ppl were pointing to a different DNS that would avoid receiving the virus.
