To clear things up:
Level Design goes without saying, your levels should be appealing and enjoyable to play. They should not be confusing to the player and the player shouldn't become easily lost. Also included in this section is how well the level is designed to help reduce lag. The performance of your game will be judged in this section of the score board.
"Extraordinary" Gameplay Mechanics is referring to anything unique to how the game is played that is out of the ordinary. Flashlights are out of the "ordinary" but have been done at least 5 different ways by now, so they won't net you a lot of points. Incorporating an entirely new system of gameplay, such as having super powers that can be swapped out (like super speed or super strength), would be extraordinary.
Unique Graphical Media refers to any type of model, texture or HUD that has not been used and abused into it's grave. Stock media will recieve 0 points in this area UNLESS it is used effectively with the target environment in a way that makes it stand out and appealing. This area will recieve points for custom entities, segments, skyboxes, HUDs, etc. Anything graphically unique.
Unique Sound and Music is a no brainer. Believe it or not, sound and ambient music add a lot to a game. Do some voice acting for your characters, put some random crickets chirping out in a field at night, have some static radio music playing in a deserted office, if it's coming out of the speakers and it's unique then you get extra points! Points in this category will increase further if the custom sounds add more to the game than simply being tossed in.
Visual Enhancements refers to anything visually enhancing. If you've made some custom shaders to make the walls look better, you'll be getting some points in this area. If you've added Bloom, DoF, Motion Blur, better shadows, etc. this is the area you'll be recieving points in. The points recieved in here will also reflect the subtlety and usage of these enhancements. If the player is blinded by Bloom for no apparent reason, chances are you won't be getting very many points. However, if the sun is shining and there's a fine mist in the air, that would provide a good reason to increase the Bloom a little more. Just find a reason to show it off! Incorporating these effects into gameplay will also increase points received.

I've heard it before that many people felt a contest posed an unfair advantage over another field of expertise. This contest (hopefully) provides ample leverage in each field to bring out everyone.
It IS NOT required for you to make your own Mod. You are more than welcome to use any publicly available Mod in this contest as well. If you made your own, more power to you!
If you use a Mod that is NOT of your own creation, you must have permission from the creator to use it in the contest. Ply's Mod, AirMod, and S4Mod are examples of Mods that are (to my knowledge) freely available to use for competitions. I would like to point out that any version of efxMod (unless proven to be a purchased copy for commercial use) has been stated in the past to be restricted for personal/freeware use only and cannot be used for entry into a competition.

Let the games begin!

I would like to donate to the first and second prize lists:

1st Prize - 2 Core Additions of your choice to AirMod (or 5-7 script commands)
2nd Prize - 1 Core Addition of your choice to AirMod (or 3-5 script commands)

Additions must be negotiated, based on the difficulty to implement and how broad it is (it cannot be game specific, as it will be integrated into AirMod itself). A "Core" addition to AirMod would be something somewhat large, like the blood system. A script command would be something simpler, such as modifying the FOV.

Also, I'll judge if you'd like Ply. Hopefully we'll get some contestants, but there are two other competitions going on right now

EDIT: Updated Prizes

Hello, Apple Slicer! There is no restriction to where your levels come from. As far as I'm concerned, if you made the level then that's all that matters. Just remember that level design plays a rather small role in this competition. We're mainly looking for game enhancements, such as gameplay mechanics, media, etc.

@Airslide:

Thanks! I'll add it to the list

Maybe you can extend the deadline a month or two so that people have time to get a mod working and experiment a but prior to making an entry.

Assuming this compo goes forward, I'll be making some nice contributions to the prize list though I need to ponder it a little bit

I'd like to have a go at this one...

My only comment would be that I'll have to use an existing mod as I don't own a copy of DBP, but I reckon I can come up with some new media etc...

I've updated the lists.

@Errant AI:

Very true, I've extended the deadline to June, so hopefully people will have more time to settle into a Mod and become comfortable enough with it to make an entry.

I'm sure everyone will be looking forward to your contributions.

@Jesper:

Just let me know if you are going to contribute and to what positions and I'll put it in the list. Perhaps an email.

@meteorite:

Additions could include core additions or scripting commands. These will need to be negotiated with the modder so that they can be sure they'll have time to get your additions in.

scriptable weapons Nao! lol jk

I'm working on writing a pretty sick feature myself, although it's pissing me off, I can't seem to get my gun to hide, it activates the target before the conditions tell it to, and the item I bind to the camera, I can't get it to rotate with the camera

Haha I could really do with winning first place, there's a couple of FPI conditions/actions missing which I need for my project

They are:

Conditions:

targetdistwithin=X
targetdistfurther=X

Actions:

Respawn - Respawns the entity

Maybe this could get added anyway?

I think it depends. If you have something chasing the player, running around corners, breathing heavily, etc, I would think it is rather clear that you should probably be fighting or running.

If it is something like a war game with an open battlefield, you need to say where the player needs to go and what he needs to do, in the form of a hud or something. Ply's Mod makes this very easy to do. With a little work I bet you can even make a compass (easiest if there is a hudrotate function, don't remember if he managed to make one though).

Ply-

Door prize contribution for you...

Please put me down for choice of one (1) of my GCS weapons for each entrant who submits a valid* contest entry. And as a bonus, any entry with a score of 50 or higher can choose two.

*must meet all of the entry requirements.

Entrants should submit/include their #1 and #2 weapon choices with their completed entries along with a valid email. This info should be forwarded to me (as a bulk list) by Ply upon completion of contest judgment. I will then email the entrants their door prizes. The exact procedure is up to you, Ply but I ant to avoid delivery delays.

I'll wait for more entry pledges or a thread sticky before committing to a special prize(s) for the top submissions

Best,
E

Damn, I really wanted to enter this, but I can't. Whenever I revert back to v1.09, I get a memblock error. Any insight on this would be great.

The best method is to create a 2nd install of FPSC so that you have one for official and one for mod use. This is really simple if you have two drives or partitions. I keep official on C and my mod version on D.

AFIK, Memblock errors are generally because of post-1.09 editors so you must have some residual files left over. I'm assuming you've run the bin/dbo cleaner and whatnot. If you only have one drive/partition, you can make a backup of all your custom media then completely uninstall FPSC. Install fresh from the disc and update to 1.07-1.09 and then rename the directory and install again from the disc so you have two copies upgrade the copy with the unaltered directory name to 1.1X and then copy back the custom media. FPSC is really good about being self-contained, so you could probably even run a 2nd copy off of a large flash drive depending on the amount of custom media you have.

I agree with Errant AI the best option is to have more than one version off fpsc.

I have three copys on my computer X10,x9updated and x9 for mods.

The best way is to install fpsc then rename the folder its in to something like Fpsc mod then unstall everything,then install fpsc again and keep that version as your updated one.
