It's really sad that there are so few female programmers, I have seen less on all DB forums (that I have visited) then then I can count on my left hand. I know 3 girls that are interested in programming but not even near to be called programmers, only one of them actually code a little.

I programmed in TP once myself the last year of the gymnasium. No, not a gym, it's where you sped 3 years after groundschool. If your browser is set to accept all cookies you can visit my old site and download 3 ASCII games I made in TP (one with a friend). http://dg.rules.it

i've met about 40-50 women who code
most get into art thou ... so the industry is actually full of them (even if they're never given the limelight) just not really coders.

Yeah, I bet there are lots of female aritsts in the industry. But nothing compares to female programmers, that means that they are smart and smart girls are sexy =)

Apparantly, Millipede was programmed by a woman, really for women - and it was the first game that women showed any interest in. It's certainly among the great classics that were the foundation of the industry as we see it today. I say the game companies should forget about female orientated games, cos they suck - they should concentrate on making the games that women play already, like Monkey Ball for example.

Girls tend to play platform and sim/caretaking games, though there are girls that like FPS games and other genres. Many also like strong female heroes like Laura and Konoko.

BTW, Bungie got a female 2D artist that made a lot of the printed Oni artwork, the cover among others. The cover actually started as a wallpaper with some of Konoko's clothes ripped of, it's now removed. Here are all the other walpapers she made: http://oni.godgames.com/downloads/themes.html

Whoah that's some nice artwork.

I think most people would agree that art is something both men and women can excel at - in fact women have a more creative and emotional way of thinking, so given the chance I'm sure they'll slowly take over the artwork side of the industry.

To tell the truth, I think when women draw attractive girls, they put a lot more thought into facial expression and poise, whereas men usually just draw the boobs bigger and it borders on cartoon porn. It's the sexist content in some anime cartoons that puts me off, I just find it creepy how the girls all look so young (please don't think I'm calling all anime fans perverts!).

lol héhéhé

For some reason.

1:My girlfriend draws at least as good as those awesome drawings

2:She makes ultra-sexy girls

And yeah there also too much reason to have 14 years old heroin in Japan just have a look at Saikano and other stuff like that.

lol They went too far in imposing school wears and this up until the end of the University lmao

Need a scanner...I had an old Agfa SCSI but it broke...Hey it cost 65$.

My mother's getting one of those 3 in 1 devices for christmas...I'll just go then and scan some.

But I think you'd be more interested in my upstairs neighbour's works who worked for marvels. My girlfriend's drawing are good but she never colors them lol

I may show work from both soon.

< VanB > given the chance I'm sure they'll slowly take over the artwork side of the industry.

Look around Van... the Art side is majoritory taken over by women. My skinner and 3 of my team are women, one of which is a coder (and pretty damn'd good too).

Perhaps if they were given more credit, more interveiws then perhaps it'd be a different story.
Although you really can't generalise this, the women I work with are far more hard working than us guys.
I mean me and dave give it our all, because we're very much industry kiddies - we eat, sleep and *ahem work.
But we can't outlast the girls in time we can stay awake, I need my 8hours sleep a nite even then its hard for me. The girls are always full of energy!

As for being more creative, can't really agree even slightly on that ... emotional sometimes, but more creative no way. They have alot of good ideas here, but the ideas are never developed upon because they can never get past the basics without being explained what to do.

Say they'll suggest a Steath Tank with a futuristic theme, oki so far ... then what? well they don't know hahaa
So it's usually upto me, dave and monique (the coder) to sit there and think. Well if its futuristic why not make it look spider like, and if we make it spider like perhaps we can have lasers from its mouth. The abdomin is kinda larger than the driver section so it can house a few troops which have two hair like antenni on the back.

You'd kinda sketch what your meaning as you say it ... everyone adds something - then we do leave it to the girls to actually make the final sketchs because that is what they're better at. The actual work.

I say Monique isn't really one of the girls because well she doesn't act much like them, more or a guy than some of us hehee well she has a knack for being able to unwravel things quite quickly which no doubt comes from the coding but also helps when we're designing.

Oh and on the point of guys just drawing Hentai style... well you guys have seen my work from me - and also my girls work from me ... and ALOT fo you said that the first one she ever did was practically porn hehee.
I also have a cute playboy bunny one she did - trust me they have worse minds than us cause they know whats sexy as hell

As for Girls like to play the Care taker games ... Hmm - I think what is the most popular amongst girls right now is Diablo. Infact to think about it women prefer the games with NO THOUGHT REQUIRED practically printed on the box.
Any RPG, FPS Sim, RTS, where you have to use more than 2brain cells they seems to steer clear like the plauge.

Don't ask me why its odd as everyone raves on how much more intelligent they are, yet at the end of the day the more blood, guts and thoughless killing that goes on the happier they are

Even in TheSimsOnline, if you get pile driven, slapped, had your foot stood on or something odds on bet is its a women who does it! And you don't have to do anything either they'll just come upto you and BOOM! you've got a face full of dirt.
Seen it happen to so many guys (^_^)
Happened once to me ... but I was like in the Love Bed twice in a row with two girls, i came out and tried to make a hat-trick so really wasn't uncalled for

Hmmm, when I said creative, I meant they often put more flair into their work, like little touches a man would never think off. Men are better at logical things and inventing, which sorta covers your stealth tank point, it's like they're in full swing when they know exactly what's happening, it's the bit before that letting them down . There's always exceptions to the rule, and unfortunately I think female coders are the exception. I'd personally like to see more interviews with female artists etc, In all my time coding (about 19 years), I've never met a woman who could code (other than in college, and then only very badly!) - I don't even know a woman who's into computers very much.

My experience of what girls like is definatly not strategy that's for sure =) But Sim City and The Sims are cartaking games and very popular among girls and so is Lemmings. I never seen/heard about girls playing Diablo but almost every guy over here plays or have played both 1 and 2. Most girls aslo stay away from FPS. RPGs seems to be prety popular even fighing games are played by many girls. With exeption for strategy girls tend to play smarter games then guys.

Girls likes to create with emotion while guys prefer technology. So in the future when there are more girls in game industry there will prbably be more female artists and more male programmers. Girls usually doesn't work well as leaders nor do many of them like a dominent leader but guys want leaders that tells them what to do. My favourite writer is Robin Hobb (don't remember her real name) because her Farseer Trilogy has so much feelings it makes the reading far richer then other books.

There was an interview with Bungie's artist before Oni was released. I think it was a fan interview though. BTW her name is Loraine something, long time ago =)

I find less feminine gilrls to be more interesting, though they should still be girls =) Short hair, smart, calm, less childish etc.

My girl ONLY likes strategic games they're the only type on which she expresses appreciation and comments...the rest just gets a 'bah!'

She loved the pokemon RPG's(go ahead laugh,I had my share),SailorMoon but she also plays alot with Soul Caliber and Street Fighter series...note that she only pics girl character.

Well firstly most girls on diablo don't say they're girls... why?
Because all of the guy diablo players are horney teens, you do the math!

lol gotta say i have a kinda affinty with those stupid pocket monsters

It's true thou, what kinda RTS does she play - Command & Conqure or Dark Reigon? Odds on is she won't touch Dark Reigon, i wouldn't blame any one not cause there should be a LIMIT to how much stragety you have to put into a game lol

I've found TheSims is actually popular with girls 18-40 and guys 20+ ... dunno what the attraction with pissing about with people lives in an almost godlike way is
Even more fun with the Online version because your pissing about with real peoples online lives - I trapped this poor sod in bed for almost an hour, hehee thank god death isn't in it yet eh (^_^)

I think you guys are kinda underestimating the calibre of the female games developer.
I can assure you it'll be a cold day in hell when art is a girls job and coding is a guys job,!
It's quite alot of crap to be hearing it from the younger gen like that ... there are women i know that are greater tech buffs than you could hope to be, perhaps not as great as puffy (hehee that guy needs a 12step i swear) but still they know so much that most people would be like :: jaw drop ::

As far as i'm conserned it is the male coders that have to watch out, because it might not seem like it now because there are only one or two - but in a few years, there is likely to be more because the coders who are making it through into this mostly male dominated area are actually bringing with them far more raw want to make outstanding titles, and prove that they're ever bit as good as the men.
It is a rare find when you come across a coder who is probably just as dedicated and talented as John Carmack ... the future certain does look bright if only there can be more spotlight to show that it is possible.

Gotta say one thing i don't miss at all on the team is some jerk with an ego bigger than mine, which is most guys within the industry hehee
My team are all older than me, quite a few years, and noones ever experessed they're unhappy with me being incharge ... or being in the "dominant" role - why i've got no clue, but you get more of a friendly atmosphere around women.
I mean ya there are somethings you can't do... like no shirt tuesdays - i find they don't join in
(i'm sorry but i've gone from a 20°c to a 35-40°c city... its bloody hot even with AC!)
But i dunno you can joke about with them just as much,
and they talk about anything. I swear last Thursday, there was a new temp in to cover someone who i haven't a clue who - but it started by dave askin' me if I'd checked out the ass on the temp. This was wilst everyone was down starbucks with me and him finishing up some new terrain, and I was like "Hell yeah you can't miss something like that!" ... so the girls all come back about ready to work and so obviously we shut up ... before you know it they're talkin' about the new temp to - and lol we had the weirdest chat about this girl who was there for like 3days.
We still finished all of our work, which trust me if it was just me and dave woulda been. Screw this lets just talk about the temp hehee ... but i dunno she got rated and everything

I don't understand the big fuss about like these so called barriers of men|women and I don't mean just in the industry but any industry.
You do the job you love to do, if not you do a job you hate for bugger all
But we're all doing the same dang job.

Saying to me that Programming is only really a guys job is like Stripping is only a Womens job...
I think the funniest has to be Cookin' being a womans job, yet what is the majority of the most famous cheifs?
Hahaa (^_^) sorry but we can all do the same jobs so why all the big deal?

Well take the DB community for example, There's probably 10,000 DB'ers out there - How little a margin do you think are female?, probably less than 1%. It's nothing to do with sexism, the majority of women have no interest in a career in game programming - in fact business programming is probably a bigger draw because it's more career based. The industry is a good 20-odd years old, games are usually male orientated, nothing has changed really - technology has gotten better and games are more uniform, it's too old to change.

WOW, I had no idea a post titled Female Programmers could be so popular,

You must all be soo lucky to have such lovely wives/ gf at home. awwwww!

Personally I love the rivalary that can happen when I date programmers, - because hes male he assumes hes better, then I just have to go outta my way to get better. I think it pushs me to work harder!!
But the male ego is a dangerious thing!!!! That could be why we broke up!

The very last thing you want is to share hobbies with your other half, that's when things get spooky, with the matching tracksuits and finishing each others sentences (Van shudders).

Thanx Raven,
but seeing as nobody has even found my pic on the web, I think I'm safe enough!

Also I'm blonde this week, I figured it might be fun for a while, hope my IQ doesn't drop too much though!
My wee bro has been very inventive with Blonde Joke this week.
One of the better ones was:

Why was the Blonde's belly button sore?
Her boyfriend was blonde too!

I could just make all you guys so jealous, I'm nearly 6ft tall, good figure and I'm now blonde!!!

Another clue to my identity, my 18 year old brother is studying physics at Queens!

The only reason my last bf's haven't lasted is because I'm a workaholic. If I don't succeed - I don't take it very well.
Only thing I ever failed was my driving test, so I made sure to wear a tight pair of jeans and a low top the next time I sat the test(I passed). lol, He never even noticed that I nearly drove into a lorry on the roundabout!

Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over!

Rose:
These kinds of threads have always turned into some really long ones during the 1½ year I've been using DB =)

I don't understand why most guys can't accept that a girl can be better. If I knew a girl that programmed better then me I would only be impressed and interested =)

Well, you're not making me much jealous. You're about my height, personally I prefer a shorter girls since that makes them cute. A good figure can turn me on, a cute face can make me melt =) I don't mind the hair color much, I like it prety short. How long is yours?

I remember my driving test. I passed the first time even though I was so nervous that the engine sopped 3 times =)

Hehee, keywords safe enough
I've always wonder'd about women and the colour of thier hair, i swear they always wanna match what they wear

DG's right thou 6ft's a lil too tall, well for my likes -i'm 5'9" so ya know i always end up accidentally catchin alot of assets which can be troublesome

think workaholics are cool
ahh ... coffee being the best friend you have sitting up nites swearing at the computer cause nothin' is going right - wondering what this RealLife thing you friends keep wanting you to experience is (^_^)

its only when you look up at the clock at like 7am that you think "great googly moogly i'm late for work!" hehee
as the fact that i'm still up at what almost 5am here proves

Keep having fun and remember sleep is for the weak - hehee

I'm not a workaholic, I'm more of a thinkaholic =) I usually don't work well when I get tired anymore, I could do that once but not after uni. But once I got a good idea it can keep me awake for hours =) I think I'm more of a gamedesigner then programmer or modeler.

Making programs work the way I want is prety fun, revriting entire programs because I got a much better idea of how to do things then I started with isn't...

Raven Vegeta, you mentioned messing with real peoples lives - I love it!

Ultima Online is a haven for me.

Newbies enter all the time, and I put on some incredible act that they believe.

An example:
I was crossing the Gung Farmer's Bridge once, and a guy on horseback passed by. He commented on the helmet I wore, a spiffy full helm, you can't see the player's face.

newbie:"cool helmet. Where'd you get it?"
me:"In the depths of Abyss." - Abyss is a dungeon in one of the prime games, Ultima Underworld.
newbie:"sweet, how can I find one?"
me:"you must promise me you shall never venture into that deathtrap!"
newbie:"why? what's so wrong about that place?"
me:"it was there that I became horribly disfigured."
newbie:"Cool! Let me see."
me:"NO! I must begone."

I ran for it. The secret is to coax them into believing, and then leaving them without a clue!

Another time I said to a newbie that I was Satan. I even polymorphed into a daemon to 'prove' it!

Ah, memories.

Who wants cake? I've got a little slice of hell for everyone.

BTW, talking driving. I just started playing NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and I can't stop playing. I'm undefeated with my black Mercedes Benz. It got slow acceleration but with it's 250km/h top speed and great grip it's really awesome. And it's heavy weight comes really handy tackling the cops =) My last race was the Mercedes challenge and 2 laps took me 5:44 with the 2nd car comming in at 6:22. 32sec, not bad =) My top speed was 217km/h. Love that game...

Well, I had a feeling you meant it that way but since so many are younger around here I went for the other way =) It both looks and plays really good. I just with I had a better GFcard so I could max the feeling. My 260W speakers and 300W sub really gives the game an extra edge cause it has some really nice heavy driving music =)

path:
I want a girl that likes what I do, would be really boring otherwise as I live for what I do. AoM is great though, I love the wikings, so flexible =)

My wife is great at programming (in basic at least) but has no real desire to create games. The only type of games she likes are RTS, Puzzle and Dancing ones (The dance mat keeps her fit, callerie count is a godsend! lol)

I always thought she was just humoring me when she says she likes my work, but the other day I heard her on the phone telling her mum my new project looked "actually really amazing" (Her words not mine :p )

Guess I'm lucky Rose does sound damn cute tho j/k
