Will Wright strikes me as the type of guy that would implement a game stopping bug to get the time he needed to fix all the issues with it =P. Of course i don't think Will is the type of person to release a unfinished product =)

Spore looks addictive... Buy Spore.. goodbye world.. I'm too busy to do anything else. I can see a whole year of my life spent playing this game... and I was totally bored with all the other games that have been coming out.

To say GTA isn't a landmark is ridiculous - it started a genre all it's own, and gave us massive free roaming worlds to explore. Hell I'd say GTA was a bigger landmark than the Sims - the Sims is a damn old idea - anyone who remembers Little Computer People on the C64 can tell you that.

Didn't Driver come out before GTA? They are basically the same game.

I agree with VanB, GTA is a landmark because I know the Sims was a big landmark but GTA was even bigger, bigger places, funny easter eggs, and you get new things all the time the game makes another game comes whereas the sims was good you got over 50 new objects over 100 different interactions but the sims 2 don't get me started! Its the sims 1 spurced up in graphics, the expansions are a waste of money like £30 pounds for a expansion with over 15 new objects! Woohoo makes me want to buy it,(Sarcasm mark) And GTA came out way before driver!

Nah, GTA started back in 1998, Driver was released in 1999.

Kinda different games though, Driver was much more of a pure driving game, you never got to get out of the car or do any of the cool stuff you could do in GTA. Driver was out before GTA became 3rd person though, but the actual gameplay in GTA didn't change too much.

Just in case it haven't been mentioned, the new Spore videos from the Leipzig Game Conference 2007 has been released

Video 1(Interview):
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23832.html

Video 2(Gameplay footage):
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23833.html

Images:
http://spore.4players.de/screenshots.php

A new gamespot article(pretty interesting read) Mentions that you'll also be able to make cloths for your creatures!:
http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/spore/news.html?sid=6177159&tag=topslot;action;1

And here's also some other Spore videos from this year:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2665884846240541669 About how they create the worlds/planets in the game. Also includes a demo.

A video about player driven textures:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2330201030389333354

Player deformable objects:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8791258027656488911

Fast object distribution:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6932469206805009461

The last four videos is really just the team discussing the more technical side of Spore, and how they do different things. So it's just technical talk, although it is pretty interesting(well, atleast for some of us) and they also show some pretty cool demos some of the time

It seems to me like this is the game has been wanting to make from day 1. I love the way he has taken things from all his favourite games (including Sim City ) and put them in this one.
Spore looks like the kind of game you could pick up and have a great experience in 30mins or spend weeks on it.

Watching those makes me appreciate how good Will Wright is at presentations
The planets one was soooo boring
The texturing and object distribution were the best
Thanks Nerd

Maxis should make something like DB, how good would that be

By good if you mean commercialized crap then I agree (Though I don't think spore will be crap, it looks pretty amazing so far)

However, if it's anything like sim city 4, I'll be bored after seeing everything there is to see in a couple hours

heh, that's what I thought. The videos were still good though, the presenters just needs some speech lessons . "Hi, umm...I'm going to, well I'm going to show you umm...the creature editor. Let's see...just a second...umm...okay."
Not really a quote, but the general idea of most of the speakers .

Yeah, that humming and hawing kinda annoyed me. I've had to give a presentation in front of the management team at work, and I had to actually concentrate on not going 'ummmmmm' all the time - it's pretty tricky!.

I think it'll be a very interesting game, but it's longevity will depend on how they handle the user created content. Primarily I think we'll see a lot of penis shaped buildings and creatures made purely of eyes, but once people get creative with the editors we'll see some really nice content. Imagine stumbling on another players planet that has your creature on it, or your buildings, that would be pretty cool I think. I'm looking forward to it, but does anyone else have that sinking feeling, like we got when we bought Lionheads 'The Movies' and found out how limited our movies actually were and how much Molyneux lied to us.

The movies was fun but you need the enhancement pack to really give it that movie feel..otherwise prepare for some really sub-par movies.

Microsoft made a movie maker that was more adaptable, but the 3D graphics were totally lo-poly. I just hoped that someone would take the Microsoft version, and update the 3D models to something that look good, and then add lighting. I really enjoyed the Microsoft version.

Yeah, the original The Movies was very limiting, but the expansion is definitely worth the money. More sets, better effects, free camera, more scenes, more props.

Hopefully these would be wiped out
Or maybe the eyeball race will take over the universe!! They're watching you

The unique thing about Spore is that, as they said in the video, the deformations add to each other, so instead of adjusting 4 sliders and getting maybe 400 variations, you are getting something like 100^4 variations! Don't quote me on the math, but it sounds large

I hope there are enough videos to keep me going till the release

I heard there's only about 5-6 hours of gameplay before you advance into the space age. Then conquering planets and space is what you do for the rest of the entire game. Interesting?

yes but that can vary alot depending on how the user plays the game, for example it in the creature stage the user never upgrades the brain , you have to have a certain brain size to go up to the tribe game so one could play for like 20 hrs in just creature stage if they so choose. Now me personally would try to get to the space stage as quick as possible because that sounds most fun to me.

Can your creature be aquatic through out the game, as in live on land but also be able to breath under water? I haven't see any flying creatures either. If it's no to both those types, then I might avoid the game; why leave those out?

That's probably the minimum. You could stay in one stage as long as you like I bet .

For the underwater I've heard no (and assume flying too), but that it's possible for an expansion. They had it planned originally, but I think that it would take a whole lot more time to do properly, so they don't have time to do it.

Good point. We don't want them to be delayed another year, lol. They better make it an expansion, because other wise the point of the game is lost; my imagination can only go as far as land based creatures. Ah well, I'm sure Mr. Wright has about a billion other things to worry about, not to mention work on.

Imagine how difficult it must be to make a procedural animation for flight!
I hope they do have expansion packs, and pretty sure there will be.

I was thinking that the controls look simple enough for a console version, is there going to be one?

Flying creature?

No, it's just a flying vehicle shooting on a creature I have seen pictures of flying creatures. But those were from back in 2005, so I don't think they tell anything. The game has changed a lot since then. You can actually also see flying creatures in the 35 min demonstration from 2005. But I really think that for now you'll only be able to make land-based creatures. I think they would've shown that you could make flying or underwater based creatures by now if it were to be in the game from start.

My guess would be that it would be something for them to add in a expansion pack.

The long 1hr video mentions that underwater buildings have a dome over them. So I presume that this means that you can live underwater throughout the game.

Well if it's anything compared to The Sims 1 and 2, you'll have about 3 every year after it's released .

Although you have to remember that they said that in 2005. And they have never ever actually shown anything like that.
