Hey, thought it would be fun to see who has the fastest connection. Goto http://www.speedtest.net and click chicago to see who has the fastest timing there.

Here's my first result. This one is from my work using a T1 or T3 connection (not sure which one). I'll post my home one later tonight. But for now, try and beat this one!

I'll sort out my SkySurf connection later (the consoles use that for net connection mind), see what that gets.
As you can see this connection is fairly poor for overall bandwidth, surfing and such but ping times are awesome for gaming.

Like 802.11b/a/g/n?

I think the fastest one there was like 65000, must have been a fiber optic connection. Either that or it was the guys AT the server building being funny lmao

I have SBC as my service provider. We recently just switched from brighthouse because they thought they were the only people on the block after their monopoly rights in our city ended. As far as service goes, SBC wins hands down, but connection wise, so far it's brighthouse. I could download at 800kbs from my home computer steadily and now I hardly get 250kbs. I'm not sure what thats all about but we have the tech people coming out tonight to take a look at it. I'm being patient about it though because it's one heck of a deal that they have. We also get our cable through them and the Uverse stuff is amazing (it's the program they offer). Sometime in the near future we will be able to actually switch the camera angle at football games from our TV! How cool is that I'm also being patient because they are farely new to the area and they are still having problems with their servers and lines. I think once that gets fixed up nicely I'll have a great connection. Especially since the fiber optic box for my block is right outside my house haha

My connection started about a year ago at 6.5mbps. Been on the same package with my ISP but the line quality has gradually degraded over the past year or so. Even the BT speedtests which bypass the ISP confirm this

I did it again just to see how accurate it was.

Then I tried a different server.

Then I tried the New York server since most of the stuff I download comes from the U.S.

Can't say I am happy considering I'm paying for 1500 kb/s. Stupid Australian internet.

Since BT were released from their price controls they have been slowly incresing the wholesale costs and putting small ISPs out of business.

Not much if you're using it for internet, but for gaming it can be the difference between life and death

Well, not really. I mean, electromagnetic waves move at the speed of light, right? Will transmitting data through the air as opposed to sending it down a cable as electrical impulses really make that much difference?

Would have expected more when paying for 12mbps broadband. Though my download tends to top 300kbps.

I have an uncle who worked for pacific bell and he was mentioning one day about cable companies messing with the speeds. He said that when you first get it you are getting what you payed for, but then, during the same time it takes for a normal person to get used to something (they do studies on this I suppose) they lower teh speeds just a little bit. Their are ways to 'uncap' your modems but it's illegal and it's very hard to do without getting caught as it's fairly easy for them to tell.

I'm not sure if I believe that they do that, but that's just the ncie guy side of me I guess. I mean I would love to give them the benefit of doubt but I'm not sure it today's world... Companies are like that.

I live in the country so I wonder if things might be slower because of that...but still, a little bit more speed would be nice...

I know we'll get some 56k-ers nagging us as we're complaining about our connection speeds...I remember 56k...not a road I want to go down again...

Man! Smokin'! Are you located right next to the server or something? Tell me this is just from your work!

I'm going to try the speed test at home tonight and post that one and I'm also going to redo the speedtest here at work tomorrow morning when no one is here. The network activity should be low and I think I can make it to at least 12000.

Heh, I think some of the servers are weak. Tried a few other random servers around the US, and was getting same as local results. (My connection says Comcast, btw, but its only routed through comcast for some odd reason. I've actually got a private connection as of a few days ago)

I think the pain of living around here is that we're just out of the decent broadband area.

Aparently the best we can get is 2Mb, but that said my SkySurf (BSkyB Broadband) is a damn sight quicker. Gets pings of <10ms (usually between 2-8ms) which is why it's connected to my consoles via WiFi.

Vista is being a pain atm though and refusing to find the ICS through the WiFi and don't have a cable long enough to hardwire.
