Indeed i do, however the old cable is only like this

and i only have one ide port so i want to kill 2 birds with one stone and get the hard drive and disc drive sorted with one cable, well i dont have a choice seeing as i have one ide port.

Is it possible to buy cables like this:

so for example i can plug them into:
************======] DVD re-writer
Mobo=====/\=] hard drive
*************======] Cd drive

? So like a 4 jointed ribbon wire?

Right, i had a look in the box of cables from my old pc and found a blue connector thing, it looks like a cheap version of a ribbon cable. It has a black and grey connector thing much like the small ribbon i was using above. It fits into my cd drive and the hard drive and into the ide slot easily. However there was a ribbon cable connecting my old mobo to the hard drive in the old pc and the bluish cables connecting the cd drive to the mobo as there were 3 ide slots on the old one, will it work running a cd and hd or is the blue cable specifically for cd rom drives or something of the sort. You can see the ide slots from the old mobo at the top of this thread, on the last picture of the first picture post, far left. (blue slot)

Sorry if that was a little confusing, its hard to explain. I personally dont see why the blue cables cant run the hd and cd but i said that about the thermal paste and the stock heatsink and fan. i dont want to risk anything :/

As for the pci graphics card, i was thinking of getting this cheap 8400 as a temporary untill i can buy an 8800 /9 series when it comes out, is there any reason why it shouldent work ?: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/129802

that gfx card would work in your computer. Keep in mind tho that it'll be slow^.^

And keep in mind that all ide cables will work in any ide drive, so you're good on that.

Just make sure you set your cd drive to slave and your hdd to master. There should be charts on your drive telling you how to set the jumper appropriately. If you don't do it right, your computer won't boot, but otherwise no damage will be done

sorted, its now all ready however the motherboard does not have a port for the monitor so i will have to go out and buy a graphics card with one. =/

went out today and got a £50 graphics card which got a 4.1 on the vista rating, along with a 250g sata hard drive which got a 5.9. I managed to put it all together and its sitting there, as it does, and it works ^__^. Vista is a bit pathetic its basically windows but the folders have different names to confuse you. :/ only problem now is i cant get the sound to work :/

I installed drivers from a disk, i fixed the sound but i dont know how.

Well, its all working and yesh its very pretty :/

250gig segate sata hdd
1gig 667mhz ddr2 ram
something x1550 gpu (will probs replace, but the 4.1 vista rating wasnt too bad)
Asus pk5 mobo
vista home premium

Some guy at the pc store said dont bother with raid, it slows it down because of the amount of data trying to get through at one time. Instead use one hdd to run the oporating system and the other to store stuff. i wouldent know how to put my oporating system on one and remove it from the other though :/

Something else came up, when i check the hdd/program files i found:

Program files
program files (x86) -or something similar

When i installed a game it saved it to the (x86), they are almost identical, whats going on there, shouldent there just be one?

You usually want to download them from the website, as the website should have the most up to date drivers. You should not install your video card from the cd, ever. You want to grab that from ati/nvidia's site.

I haven't checked up on what this is for, I did a quick search but no luck. I assume it just designates 32bit programs and 64 bit programs. I don't really quite know without looking into it further. This is normal in vista and you shouldnt worry about it tho.

That's not necessarily true. But I don't raid my drives, as I want to use all the storage space, and I don't want to combine the space into one large partition, because if one fails you loose all the data on the good drive.

So if you want windows on your sata drive, you'll need to reinstall windows.

Harms allready done, but the computer scared me a little, all the parts were sitting in different boxes, yet it still knew the timezone i was in and what the time was when it was fully assembled. And that agp card i was on about, the old one, the ati raideon x1300 was no where near the pc but on system specs said it was the card i was using (untill i installed the drivers of the new one)

I thourght that was a little strange considoring every part was new.

Yep, you can install it on the same machine as many times as you like. It just won't activate on new machines. If activation fails, you'll have to call ms. But they'll activate you as long as you're not trying to install it on a new compy.

As for your gfx card, you should just download and install the new driver, it'll take care of the current driver installed. You'll avoid a lot of hassle with games that way. And as for the funky stuff it was doing... wierd:S

Then you bought a really short cable. I have a full tower antec case, and my ide cables reach from top to bottom.
