Got my new computer, installed XP x64 edition. I installed the drivers for the mobo and my usb stopped working. After I did the updates (which took hours for sp2 to download and never gave a status of update) I still have 8 of 16 usb ports state "windows cannot load the driver" in device manager. And an unknown device I have yet to figure out what it's for. During the .NET update, computer BSOD and rebooted before I could even read it. I finally have all the updates installed. This isn't why I hate XP, most of this doesn't have anything to do with it probably.

I'm still trying to turn off all the stupid notifications on every friggin thing that happens. Security alerts keep popping up to tell me updates are ready or that im at risk becase the firewall is off. Which service is this so I can remove it?

And a very annoying "feature" of the file explorer, clicking a folder auto-expands and collapses the other folders. Anyway to turn that off?

And a fresh install of XP uses 1/2gb of ram right from the start, twice what I had to use for 2kpro.

I'm basically asking for a shortcut way to take everything that makes XP separate from 2k and just remove it.

Haha... For some reason I find this thread extremely amusing and ironic. I think you can shut down those warnings in the security center in XP SP2.

The features are off, but they notify you constantly that they're off.

Blah, I think I found it. Was in the stupid little bubble that normally just contains useless help info. The XP GUIs waste so much space.

Yeah, I think there's a checkbox at each of the functions (possibly in their advanced settings) to turn that off.

finally got stupid usb to work. apparently it wouldn't work until I installed Abit's overclocking utility, who would've guessed.

Still looking for a way to disable the auto-expand on folders in the file explorer.

I concede. I used to be a Windows 2000 fanatic, but once I got XP on a computer that could handle it I decided it was definitely worth the switch. XP is the most stable Windows OS that I have seen. I haven't experience Vista yet though but I hear bad things about it left and right so

I've changed my mind a little bit, XP is not stupid, just its 64-bit cousin! I can't find a friggin thing that'll install properly. iTunes only partially, just can't rip or burn CDs. My Symantec is useless and ZoneAlarm won't install either.

I might just say screw the 4gb of ram and put a 32-bit version on. What good is all that ram anyway if I can't install anything to use it?

You can send me the spare 2GB... I mean, it's useless anyway. I'll just throw it away when you send it to me, honestly, but it'll save you the work of doing so!

I must be one of the few users here to prefer 2000 to XP - It just seems to do everything faster than XP does.

We did have XP x64 here and tried it on two machines...
First one we tried it on NEVER got past "Applying your personal settings", So we downgraded it back to its original 2000.
Second one got in and worked for about 3 months before encountering similar problems, so we downgraded that one back to its original XP.

So er, no... We don't use XP x64 here, not anymore

I don't know how to turn that thing off, but I usually press the little + sign to the left of the folder name.
Also, if you are interested in a (better) alternative for file browsing, you can try out Total Commander.
It have an optional tree view, but the functions for that is the same as in XP.

I allways afraided from a clowns. aww..

One of the cool things about attending an IT college, MS deals! About once a year or every 18 months I think, a new software bundle is released for students. This bundle often includes the current Windows version, sometimes a server add-on is included, Office, and Visual Studio. Best of all, I get it all for free. So I do have legitmate copies of most MS OS's out there.

I found out how to turn off the auto-expand folders in the File Explorer. Edit the following reg key, "FriendlyTree", to a 0 instead of 1.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

I reinstalled XP 32-bit tonight. I've been having much less compatibility issues. Oddly, I had to activate Windows before it would let me check for updates. x64 didn't make me activate, and I thought Microsoft did away with the activation requirement for updates.

The only problem now is the 4GB ram issue. Windows shows 3.25GB, even after I added the 'PAE' switch in the boot.ini file. Any ideas?

Non 64-bit XP is limited to about 3 gigs of ram, no way around it. And please, do not get Vista, it will burn in flames just like Windows ME did.

True, but only Linux has been able to provide any usable form of 64-bit OS (IMO).

With such comments I wonder if you even used Vista. ME was a disaster, Vista is more like XP in it's infant stages, but better. If you ask me, Microsoft has outdone itself again, and I forsee (and have found) a very stable OS in Vista.

Windows 98 was awesome! none of this fancy modern rubbish... something much more solid-looking about it. All the plain grey toolbars instead of like the shiny blue or chrome ones.

Why does everyone prefer 98 over 2000. 2000 was hugely more stable and all around better.
