Maybe I'm just getting used to the process, but I don't think you've got enough to convince people to test. Really, you need to get some bits together and a functioning game. At the moment there is movement, but you need to expand on this.

Again, this all me rehashing the same stuff I've told you before.

Try having a timer based hunger like if you feed the dog it'll count down after that and then you'll need to feed the dog.

yeah that's what I would advise.

What are you going to do apart from keep the dog fed and suchlike? Is there going to be a purpose, or do you just look after the dog...

Will you have more than one dog? Or just the one.

That earns you a nice noob slap. Have fun with that

Funny how most people who post things along the lines of "Wow, finally a game from you" etc. don't have games to show for themselves. Hmmm.

Anyways, good luck with this

Well, I must say CGJ, I am impressed. I must admit though, when I first saw this thread, I was like, uh oh, whats going on this time. But having read through it all, it seems like you're actually getting somewhere. So as a prize for your efforts, I am willing to offer you some of my (most amazingly professional) advice.

First off, instead of applying for beta testers, just post latest updates of the game, so we can all continue to test it. I mean, I downloaded the 1 posted right at the start, and thought: "Meh, its ok, I guess." But seeing some of your images, I want to see what it is like now.

Second of all, in the version I downloaded, I noticed that only part of your house was actually showing, but the background image was somewhat larger. This leads me to believe you have the resolution set wrong for that background. (E.G. you probably have it set to 640x480 and the background size is 800x600.) My advice on this, would be to look for some way to change the resolution. (I know how to do it in Dark BASIC Pro, but not Dark BASIC Classic.)

Third of all, if this is going to be anything like having a real dog, you will need first of all, a series of psuedo-random actions for the dog, such as it randomly peeing on the floor because it isn't house-trained. Then once you have this, you need what most AI based games have, the "good doggie gosub" and the "bad doggie gosub". So you'll need some way to let the dog know, and keep stored, what is good, and what is bad, so it either, continues doing something, or stops doing something. (Examples of this are in Black and White (& 2), Creatures (2 & 3D) & the Neichize 3D pets series.

Fourth of all, you need some collisions, to make the game a bit more interesting than simply some sprites on a background image. I personally choose 3D above 2D, so I'm not the most experienced in sprites, but ask/search around for methods of sprite collisions and how to get complex sprite collisions (for things like walls, curves etc...)

I hope some of this was of help, I also hope to play a newer version of this game, and finally I hope that this does become a finalized release on your behalf.

Well done.

Wow, thanks man. You do not know how much this will help me. I do need more collision. And maybe using a file-based system, such as,

doggytricks.txt
HouseTrained=NO

Well when you teach it to use the pee-pad,
doggytrick.txt
HouseTrained=YES

Cool I like the way this is starting to shape up

hope it keeps going

and cheers Jeku for the noob slap on The Grim Reaper. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to see CGJ starting to actually make something properly, even if he's still posting loads of rubbish elsewhere. Well done CGJ. You're getting house-trained too.

Sounds like the game is actually coming on nicely - I think it's good you finally found your focus and know what you're doing, it has been a bumpy road for you in this forum, but hey you're beginning to produce more than some of us around here.

Keep at it...oh and don't mind putting up a video or some new screenies? I would ask to beta test, but I'm not going to risk it on this comp as it would probably crash. Yes even a 2D DBC project.

I love Nancy DrewG, but not insert brain here

Alright.

Not much of an improvement from the last demo, but its getting there. You supplied the wrong .exe, so I had to recompile it. The leash button doesn't actually work, its just there, you have to press enter to use it. Honestly though, it needs some work, no collision, all you can do is walk around, hunger needs to work and there just isn't much to it. A big improvement graphically since last demo though.

Keep working, you'll get there eventually.

Man, if it's not ready for a demo then it's not ready. Give him some time to get it more finished and then he'll upload a demo.
