Greetings

So after spending a bunch of time trying to figure out a project to invest some time in, I decided to pull Doom3 out for inspiration.

Then I thought, why not just start putting together a Doom3 themed game in FPSC which has led me to this thread.

Partially inspired of course by Airslide's classic Doom 1 and 2 fan game threads which I thought were pretty cool.

Anyways not much to showcase yet but hopefully these screenshots will give an idea.

Also I've put together a short video to show this in action:

If your going to use shaders, at least remove the glitched ones, then you will have an awesome looking game, even though its actually looking pretty spot right now. The level design is pretty nice, keep it up.

I like it but i would make a little bit darker because in doom 3 the game was really dark, just my opinion though

Wow, that looks almost exactly like the beginning of Doom 3! Excellent work! It's only the helicopter that concerns me.

Upcoming computer: Vista Home Premium, AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual-Core 5600+ 2.8ghz, Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 640 MB, and 2 gigs of RAM all at $1600... WOW

Nah just remove the baldes and retexture it to look like a hover/space copter. I'de redo the quality of the hand texture for the flashlight to fit the surroundings if I were you as well. But all in all looking good!

Looking great!
The TGC gallery showed these, and it immediately stood out of the others.
So i decided to look at the screenie...and here is what i think!

Level design is very very good!
Very similiar to Doom3.
Nice cave textures...they really blend well with the
industrial envirenmont!
Nice use of lighting!
Just like Doom3, the lighting wasnt all just 1 color in 1 room.
No...you used more colors that fitted perfectly with each other!

But it also had some downsizes...

The helicopter, it didnt matched with the level itself..
Maybe use a bit more advanced vehicle...with a bit grunged up texture.
Also as for the cave segments...they look good! but!
It was mirrored, if you could edit the texture a bit to make it look better seamingless.

Also, some entities looked all messed up cause of the lighting...
Which is easy to fix.

So it deserves a total rating of:
8! (of 10)

Good luck on this project!
And would love to see more.

Cheers,
Cheese Cake.

except for the helicopter i thhink this looks cool! 2 things, 1) people say make it darker, do this but not as dark as the original Doom 3, b cus that was too dark and really anoying. but... 2) if you do make it darker, try to find a way to let you hold a flashlight and ad LEAST a pistol at the same time. i hate always dying because of trying to switch from flashlight to gun, shooting and missing, switching the flashlight to see where it went, and find out its right in front of me taring me apart.

Oh,yeah...the "flashlight to weapon to flashlight" bit was fun...

Hope that gets left out of this game...

This actually looks great. I am going to keep one of my eyes on this project. Please don't give it up.

You might be able to make that flashlight into a weapon by adding an attack animation and setting the range to 15. However, you won't be able to make the actual "light" crosshair move.

The video is impressive, enough so to wonder why you're recreating Doom 3 when it's obvious you could be creating something new and better.

Very nice work. Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

very nice have you thought of plot? perhaps a spin off from doom another marines perspective you could have voice recordings left around the base just use the pda model that came with fpsc place it in a sound marker or are you going to make this a more action title

All

Thanks for the positive feedback and advice which is really useful

I've taken this onboard and currently making some tweaks to the level such as

- Pistol with flashlight
- Level ambience controlled with scripts so some areas darker and some lighter to give a nice balance.
- Amending helicopter model to suit world more appropriately
- Finishing security checkpoint corridor (incomplete in movie)
- Starting work on UAC reception interior

I like the idea of PDA's lying around with voice recordings from other inhabitants (thanks small fish). Also there will be items in storage which you'll need to find PDA / use computer / speak to someone etc to get the code for.

I'll upload more screehshots as things progress and a playable demo when theres enough content to justify this.

NS, dude this game is looking fantastic, keep it up, the screenies are great, the video was awesome, it was like watching somebody play a FPSC version of DOOM3, but I agree with everyone else with the helicopter, that's kindof weird. I have a good idea to replace it with. Make something that hangs from the wall, or just make some normal entity and make it float, make it have for sides that have a "screen" with the UAC logo. That would suit the game more.
Keep it up.

P.S. How can I do voice acting in my games, what equipment would I need and what not.

This is def looking nice and can see this being a good project, i would try not to copy it to much but keep it to the doom feel.

The only thing like many have said is the helicopter it would be better to use it just on a H pad with a gap in the ceiling like you just landed instead off it moving around inside.

Nice work look forward to seeing more

Thanks all

Here's a quick update / answers to some questions.

Quote: "How can I do voice acting in my games, what equipment would I need and what not."

A PC microphone, recording software e.g. Audacity (freeware) and some voice changing software e.g. MorphVOX.

Quote: "Has This been scrapped?"

No. Development slowed down a little over the last few weeks due to the day job and some PC maintenance issues.

I've now made the following changes, based on everyone's feedback:

- Replaced helicopter with more appropriate futuristic craft
- Reduced ambient lighting slightly and improved shadow quality
- Removed torch and replaced with pistol + flashlight crosshair
- Finished security checkpoint corridor
- Currently working on UAC reception interior

Attached is an updated screenshot showing the helicopter replacement craft and improved shadows.

Here is a screenshot of the finished security checkpoint corridor.

Once I've completed the UAC reception interior I'll post a screenshot and pistol with flashlight crosshair.

I'm ensuring advice from the community is incorporated into the game so thanks to everyone supporting this project.

I think you should have the flashlight and the pistol seperate.

Also, the level design in the second pic is a bit messed. The fan and that spotlight don't really fit in.

I agree with Inspire, I too was wondering what a ceiling fan and spotlight were doing in a corridor or security checkpoint. I would get rid of them both and put in a security camera, seeing as it's a security checkpoint, that would fit in with that better.

Keep it up.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't checked this out yet. I saw the video (and now the new improvments) and I like it! The new shadows definately give it that "Doom" feel. I'll be watching this ones development as well...for the "you-know-what" award.

doing good! i like that thing you replaced the helicopter with. and you should get rid of th spotlight and ceiling fan, especially since that wasnt even in the original doom3 anyway. i am watching this game's development it hs great potential.

I don't want to go through the switching between my flashlight and a weapon like I did in Doom 3.If the flashlight and weapon are separate then I hope there is the ability to use both at the same time.If you've ever had to kill monsters from Doom 3 with your flashlight because you didn't have time to switch weapons then you understand.
Looking forward to playing this...

haha some good times had with that game! im not sure whether you should stay true to the flashlight pistol thing or not? i think it made the game alot harder when you had to keep switching but also more fun because, as fred said you end up having to batter them away with your flashlight. hmmmmmmm having said that i don't think the flashlight has an attack in this does it? o well does not matter! i wouldn't mind it either way you do it.

If you were to make a Quake 4 fan game in FPSC then you could add the flashlight on the machinegun and the pistol. But since it is Doom 3 I personally would stick with ity being seperate. Anyway the came is lookin' really good. I can't wait to se what you do when you get the the area when you start fighting. Good luck!

yea, i have to agree with Vorg1. even thoug it was my idea, i still have to agreee with him. keep em seperate. is it just me or did Doom 3 look like fpsc in the first place? near the beggining of the game.

I've now removed the ceiling fan and spotlight from the security checkpoint corridor. In retrospect, I agree it looks better without

It seems there's some debate over the flashlight / weapon situation so am going with pistol + flashlight combo as switching from flashlight to gun can be frustrating during combat. If I get time to make the flashlight into a working close range weapon it'll go back in.

By way of an update, attached is a screenshot of the UAC reception area interior which is nearing completion.

And another pic of the UAC reception area.

Once this area is complete, I'll be attempting to create / edit a couple of ingame cutscenes so thought i'd provide an update before I get stuck into that which may take a little time.

Thanks to those commented since I last posted.
