Assuming your older and not stuck working at a hardware store (*sigh*), where do you work? Do you work for someplace based around your talents that were listed in your portfolio? Just wondering.

Actually, I'm working at a electronics/hardware/computer store and doing freelance stuff as it comes by. The portfolio is hopefully being extended with 3D stuff and some cool stuff soon.

I have been told by more than one person that I am known for writing puzzle games ... which is odd because I have only written two.

If anything, I guess for the uncompleted RTS tutorial.

Well, depends on how you define success lol. "Critically acclaimed," that can't be contested, but as for sales? eh, not that great lol. Better than some I suppose, about equal to Dumbo & Cool to my knowledge.

Many of the people who sell their games on here end up writing a thread complaining about lack of sales and in turn end up giving them away for free. It's a cycle.

Woohoo, I made tha_rami's list! I don't even care that my "medical degree" was questioned.

Now my list:
tha_rami: frequent poster, always has his opinion
agent dink: lowly worker at MISoft, works long long hours
Cash curtis II: geisha house, lives in germany, has an eye patch
Gil Gilvanti: PoPR, and for his criticisms
Matt Rock: Humongous Sony fanboy, ridiculously long posts, and MISoft
Aikicat: Used to be Megaton Cat, hilarious posts
Scraggle: He's a cat
Ben: He's also a cat, and apparently good in bed... and I guess for Multisync and Tempest
Jeku: The watch dog of the boards, locking the hordes of bad threads
Bizar Guy: Dream

See, I'm completely different. We released a really great game that got soaring reviews across the board but couldn't find an audience. It's my own fault for thinking an over-simplified text adventure could produce magnificient sales, and also, I don't know much about marketing, and that plagues most others as well.

Still, that so many people were positive about Eternal Equinox, that so many people said stuff like "it's the deepest story I've seen in a game" and all that, and that JPP gave our game a higher review score than Sam & Max or Mobile Suit Gundam... it put a chip on my shoulder that won't come off until MISoft has ten consecutive games that get crap reviews, lol. So EE won't go freeware any time soon... although we'll still be giving away tons of free copies in contests and all that .

Once we're a nice big company I'll be sitting in my office eating doritos and getting paid to play video games with Matt Rock

EDIT: ok, so we'll do a bit of designing and brainstorming on the side, but still. Suck on that Rami

Well, Jeku, you're right there, but you haven't taken into consideration how HORRIBLE everyone on these forums are with marketing

The might be great games, but if no one knows about 'em, they won't ever be bought.

My cousin in canada gave me about four 3-inch-thick books on internet marketing.

What? Go away! I'm looking for the cliche market, danm you, I'm LOOKING!

@Matt - Congrats on the review. I also read their Sam and Max review too, and am wondering how they gave it 6.8 when their broken-down scores are all 6.9 and above

I'm known for my various Block Puzzle games.

I'm only on two lists though. Clearly I have to work harder!

Eventually I plan to to be known for completing all my projects, and for the Old School Project game.

Thanks . Yeah, there was some inconsistency in the review of Eternal Equinox, too. "This game has the worst writing ever," followed by "You won't find another game with writing this perfect" lol, not exact quotes but yeah, they seemed to fluctuate in their opinions constantly. Still, I get to say I've produced a game that one media source scored equally with Assassin's Creed, hehe.

Because that's how it works if you're going to have a numerical rating (a whole other offtopic rant of mine).

You can't give a game 7.0 for this, 6.0 for that, and 8.0 for the last point then overall give it a 4.0. It just doesn't work that way.

Actually, it does. The game can look beautiful, play nicely and have a great concept and still feel or be sucky. The other way around, a game can have horrible graphics, pant-on-heads stupid AI and a cliche concept and still be a great experience.

The total is not an average of the subcategories - usually it's close, but not necessarily.

Gameplay isn't the game. Gameplay is a subcategorie, how do the controls feel? Is it 'fun' to play, tedious, hard to learn, easy?

Besides the subcategories, usually three of them, there's endless variables that can make you like or dislike a game.

I know this is offtopic, but I really don't see what you mean. How can a reviewer give a game values for graphics, sound, gameplay, and then rate is lower or higher than the average on "feel"? That doesn't make sense.

Can you give me an example of a game that looks great, sounds great, and has great controls, but doesn't "feel" good?

The reason it's not an average for me is that some elements are more important than others. Say you get a game with crap 2/10 graphics, 10/10 gameplay, and 7/10 sound. Does that mean the game is worth a 6.3/10? No, because gameplay generally adds more to the game or is more important than graphics, and graphics generally than sound.

I am afraid, possibly for the first time ever, I have to agree with tha_rami on this point (don't faint ). As an example, there are some awesome puzzle games around which might just have adequate graphics (e.g. 4/10), average sound (e.g. 4/10) but such amazing gameplay (e.g. 9/10) that you would class the game as having an overall rating of 9/10 purely because graphics and sound in that particular instance aren't that important.

But that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is something that would have, for example:

4 for graphics, 4 for sound, 4 for gameplay, and 9 for overall.

Or inversely:

9 for graphics, 9 for sound, 9 for gameplay, and 4 for overall.

Do those two make any sense?

In my opinionated opinion, that doesn't make sense. However, I think I agree with Rami to some extent. On the other hand, the "feel", "flow" and "level design" and all those sub-categories would fit into gameplay. So if a game got 2/10 on gameplay because the AI and pace were great but the player movement was terrible, then the rating would be justified. But that game getting a 9/10 overall may seem like some weird anomaly, but there must be justification for it. The player movement doesn't have to affect the overall score.

Did ANY of that make sense or have ANY relevance WHATSOEVER to this debate!?!

Feigning interest since 2005!

Ah, now I see what you mean Jeku. In which case I agree. If the final mark is waaaay off any of the other marks then they probably haven't thought out their marking categories well enough and must be missing something important. Or the game has a feature so unique it doesn't fall into regular categories - but I have yet to see that happen.

*Faints*

If you're talking about three 9's and a 4, that's odd indeed. Sam and Max, however, received:

9 / Gameplay, 6.9 / Replay, 8.9 / Graphics, 7.5 / Sound

Under the remark that the game was good but nothing like its prequel. The opinion of the writer, thus the feel of the game, is important in that final 6.8 grade.

None of us have even considered the possibility that perhaps it's a typo or something, not that it's likely, but even Gamepro has had typoes in the past (well, I assume they have anyway).

Not that any of the Eternal Equinox scores were typoes . Although I'd be quite content learning that our actual overall score was more like, I dunno, 9.5 or so
