http://upload.verongames.com

VeronUpload is a file uploading service, created to give game developers without their own hosting packages or server a place to store and share their files.

There's no need to have to create an account to upload files, you simply click the upload button at the top of the page, select your file, and hit the upload button!

Each file you upload has unlimited bandwidth, and there's no file size limit on the files you upload - upload a 10GB file for all I care. Files are also never deleted, unless you specifically request them to be, or they fail to comply with the T.O.S (in other words, illegal files will be removed.)

Redesigned, as of 1/6/08

VeronUpload has been totally changed, design and features wise, you can create a free account to track all the files you've uploaded, and you can still upload without an account as well.

A multiple file uploader, so you can finally upload more than one file at once.

The actual website design is a lot cleaner, and a lot simpler, and I did that because for something like a file upload site, you just want the site to look decent, and load fast, you don't want/need really flashy designs or graphics.

There's also a backend which i've created, to allow for easy insertion of paid upgrades, once I come up with some ideas for decent package upgrades.

You can leave a description for files, and you can also password-protect files.

A progess bar when uploading files, so you can finally see the progress on uploading your files, instead of being left in the dark, watching a little bar flash past.

Written with security in mind this time... i'm not letting myself get hacked again.

And i'm open to any suggestions about what you would pay a dollar or two a month for, in the way of extra features.

Anyway, give VeronUpload a go, and let me know if you find any bugs/problems with it, and also what you think should be improved/added.

VeronVideo has been created as well - think of it as a mini YouTube... but not. Anyway, it's hosted on a subdomain until beta testing of it gets done - then i'll be ordering a 4TB server for VeronVideo, assuming there's no bugs, and assuming it would help some people out.

So take a loot at VeronVideo as well, sign up (free), and post some videos! The link is http://veronvideo.meektube.com

Thanks for taking a look.

Heh, yeah the video streaming is coming along pretty nicely, it'll have pretty much the same features as YouTube will (rating videos, commenting videos) and i'm thinking of adding community discussions for videos as well.

But a few weeks down the track and we should see it nearing completion.

Yeah, you can upload anything, provided it's not against the Terms of Service, so basically, anything legal.

If this wasn't so useful i'd class this post as spam.

Question;
Whats to stop people uploading dodgy stuff, you manually checking every single file or just browsing filenames?

EDIT: much like those Half Life II songs, thats surely illegal to post game content up on there...

@LT Tatters - If you're sane you'll remove those songs you uploaded, unless you fancy Veron getting his site shut down because of the illegal music

Veron, this is great. I've been looking for a site like this for a long time. Thanks.

Although, I fear since this may get very popular, abuse may happen more and more. I suggest you make a system that creates a User ID and stores it as a cookie.

That's pretty cool. I think you should remove that waiting for 7 seconds thing though - and post a disclaimer at the top (or bottom) of every download page saying "anyone can upload something here without it being checked, be safe when downloading files as they may contain virus or spyware" for files that haven't been manually checked.

Good job.

Cheers,

Maybe you could make it so when people upload, they choose a password for the file and can use the password to delete/modify it in the future. I could see that some people would try to abuse the manual deletion thing be contacting you to delete something someone else uploaded.

Thanks for the comments guys, i'll try to get to you all.

That's what I thought before I posted the thread, so I checked with Batvink, and he said it would be ok to post it.

Quote: "Maybe you could make it so when people upload, they choose a password for the file and can use the password to delete/modify it in the future. I could see that some people would try to abuse the manual deletion thing be contacting you to delete something someone else uploaded."

That's sort of what i'm doing now. What i'm trying to get done is when the user visits the "files" page, if the I.P address of the person who uploaded the file matches the I.P address of the person browsing, the delete option appears, and they can delete from there.

On second thoughts, your idea is probably better, my idea wouldn't work for those with a dynamic IP.

Quote: "@LT Tatters - If you're sane you'll remove those songs you uploaded, unless you fancy Veron getting his site shut down because of the illegal music"

Removed. Thanks for the heads-up Jeku.

And also, who ever the heck is reporting all the files as being illegal, even if they're not - stop it. I've got your I.P for a reason.

Quote: "Looking at the site, amazing. Good job, and thanks!"
No probs, glad you like it.

Quote: "Thanks ive been looking for something like this."

Glad it's helped you out.

Quote: "You are one hip cat, veron."

Bah, I hate cats. How about a hip dog?

@All mentioning security - I'm not sure how i'll go about patrolling whether the files uploaded are illegal or not, and there's no real way to police it, but i've got to come up with something - fast.

Quote: "I think you should remove that waiting for 7 seconds thing though - and post a disclaimer at the top (or bottom) of every download page saying "anyone can upload something here without it being checked, be safe when downloading files as they may contain virus or spyware" for files that haven't been manually checked."

The 10-second timer has been removed, and i'll add the disclaimer in ASAP, as soon as I get the illegal stuff sorted.

Thanks for all the comments again, my main problem is security, which i've got to get sorted.

I think any registered user have the ability to click on a button that flags content as illegal. That way you can just check those. Also, in case someone abuses this function you should store the user ID of everyone who uses it so you can ban them if necessary.

Neat service BTW. I think registration for uploading will be required in the long run. Also, in case you haven't already, you should forbid anime and manga licensed or not as that is sort of a gray area; if you are running a strict legal service that is.

Yep, there is already a button to report files, which has been abused. What i'm adding now is a quick thing which will record the I.P of someone using the report button, and the ID of the file they reported, so it'll be easy to tell if someone is just spamming me with fake reports.

Yeah, eventually registration will probably be needed, but in the long run i'll end up re-doing a lot of things in it, but for now, i'm focusing on adding a fair few more features, so it can compete with other file sharing services.

And a question to everyone - should there be some sort of "paid" version? For example, multiple files uploaded, FTP access, a user account so you have a list of what you've uploaded, that sort of stuff, for something like $2 a month? It'd be cool to make some sort of a profit out of the service, without reducing the main features for free users like unlimited bandwidth/storage.

Good site Veron. One thing though, I don't want to be picky, but if you click on the xhtml button at the bottom, it shows the validation is broken, it also doesn't render properly in Firefox 3 Beta 4 (which might just be a problem with this version)

The reason i wouldn't do something like this is because I looked at what Wikipedia spends on lawyers

That does say $182,000 don't it!?!

@veron - Set up a paypal donation page linked to your bank account, and put it up on the site on every page with some text like "If you think my efforts are worth it, please donate!".
I've seen many indie developers link it from their games (I might soon too) and have gotten decent money from it.

EDIT: Also, install Norton or another AV and then of course spybot S+D and auto scedule scans every night, so you can say that files are virus scanned. I dont usually donwload something unless it's auto scanned by the server.

I should point out IP address recording won't stop people abusing your service they'll just use hidemyass.com and other such proxys.

Thanks - yeah, the XHTML validation was alright, until I added that darn ad, i'll have to take it out. I'm using Firefox 3 Beta 5, and it seems to render alright for me, what exactly isn't rendering properly in B4?

Quote: "I should point out I.P address recording won't stop people abusing your service they'll just use hidemyass.com and other such proxys."

Hmm, good point. I've got to think of a decent way to permanently keep people out who are banned, but i'll deal with that issue when it comes, i'm hoping I won't need to ban anyone.

Done, scans scheduled at midnight every night with SpyBot S&D, and Kaspersky 7.0, and i'll probably make it a weekly routine to create a HJT log as well.

Quote: "Veron - You also should have a little file description adder and a file browser."

The features i'm working on now is adding file descriptions, and file rating. After that, i'll consider adding the file browser for .ZIP and .RAR files, so you can see the exact contents of each file before you download it.

If the service requires an email to sign up then you can always ban the address, and if needed a whole domain.

I don't think you should make it mandatory to have user accounts, I'd much rather just have to type a simple password for these things. Maybe you could make it list all the files uploaded with that password. User accounts and email addresses make it sound like... every other file hosting service.

Yeah, that's very true, and that's why i'm not going to make it mandatory, and probably not even an option.

And also, when it comes to the user deleting their own file, the person uploading is given a delete link (as well as the link to the download, obviously), so they can just go to that link if they want to delete their file at any time.

I think you should have a process whereby people leave their email addresses, you look at the files, and send them the link if they pass copyright laws.

Hmm, that would work, but then the problem is the uploading isn't instant - they have to wait for me to approve it and send them the link, which isn't something I want to do.
