So I was thinking today about how although I'm a geek, I don't have a very geekish job. I wanted to see who else had a non-geekish job around here, so please post your job info

I'm a bouncer at a nightclub in Ontario, Canada called Revolution Nightclub. My job is to make sure you aren't too drunk, fighting, harassing people, doing drugs, puking etc...

Not very geekish eh? :p

Student studying a course in writing...geeky? Probably not, though you could call me a swat.

Actual jobs I've had, well Kitchen Assistant and Cashier aren't geeky. I do student radio DJing, but am not paid, so it don't count as a job - but I use a computer, CD Drives, a mixer and a microphone - sort of geeky stuff.

As for being a geek? Come on I'd rather be called socially challenged.

I push trolleys at a shopping centre, drive a tractor, and my last proper job was as a Service Operator for a Bank (open accounts, transfer funds, do loans, etc etc.)

They aren't really geeky. That said, I have worked as a 3D animator for an engineering firm. That was fun, but admittedly, a little geeky.

I work the floor/stock at a Pet Food Store. I did work at a Hardware store until recently. The place kept shafting me though, so I left. With my new job, it's the same BS, only different. I guess you just can't escape that in retail. How I can't wait to get a real job...

I am a barman!

Not really. I worked as barman for one month - I enjoyed few things in that job. My current work is "geekish". But it is fun most of the time. I am a designer and developer of games and other educative systems in Flash.

I think about the PHP/Java/.NET developers of my company. It might be so lifeless to work with brute programming for eight or more hours per day.. o__O"

I want to lay claim to being one of the most geeky (what a title!).

I am currently debugging and translating Adobe CS4 but I plan to give up my job in September to become a mature student studying for a degree in Computer Game Programming

Lol, I worked on a dairy farm for 8 years....that's not geeky. Of course, growing up on a farm necessitates working on it...but I did get paid a few years ago to go back and milk the cows for a few weeks lol.

Now there is a non geeky job.

So far I know I have the least geeky of jobs. I work in HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) and it sucks! I can't wait to get an IT position or something.

I'm a web designer- free lance.

I don't care if it's geeky. I enjoy it.

The only thing you should be worried about your job is that it's not your favorite hobby. When play becomes work, your gonna wish you never lived.

Free lance is fine though. Just saying.

Next month I have my degree finals and will finish my 5-year course to graduate as an ... (drum rolls) ... Accountant/Auditor.

I'm a warehouse packer. It's a lot better than sitting at a computer all day, doing nothing.

I now look at all IT/computer jobs as not being real jobs, because you don't put any real effort into it, no use of muscles, just sit there all day playing flash games.

These comments always make me laugh, as if anyone can sit around doing nothing and keep their job!. I used to get it a lot working as a project engineer, from people who couldn't zip their fly without a detailed schematic. Truth is that a lot of people in offices actually work, and unless you've worked in an office you shouldn't make assumptions.

From someone who has done some real cruddy packing jobs, I can honestly say that working with computers is infinitely better. You get back what you put into any job, personally I concentrate on saving people time and the company money, and people appreciate how much easier I can make their jobs. I'm actually first in line for any spare cakes, and that's not to be sniffed at.

Of course it's not like a real job in a warehouse with half the pay and twice the idiots, and I don't go home knackered every day, and I can't be replaced by a trolley jack, but it does me fine! .

This is a strange place to make a post like this, because everyone here must be a bit geeky. When you have a geeky job, you get to use your brain, drink coffee, earn more. I think 95% of people who say they wouldn't like office work would absolutely jump at the chance to work in an office.

No I dont get to use a computer, There are no cool buttons I get to press. I just get to pick up rods and stack them all day lol. Sucks, but pays the bills.

Right now I'm an application developer, my last job was games developer, and before that I worked in a supermarket stacking shelves, worked in a bar, and worked as a sales assistant in a garden center. Kind of balances each other out I think...

Well some people work, but I've seen others in the warehouse office playing solitaire and being paid far more than I am and I'm the one breaking my back each day, so I guess its fact and opinion plus a little annoyance

I'm just saying proper work is where you get knackered and you use your hands everyday so they end up being cut to bits and dry as sand

Higgins is just mad at the world.

Sure I don't get *physically* sore from work, but when I'm working 12+ hour days, bleary eyed into the night with stress and tight deadlines, trying to debug a large hunk of software, my body is just as tired when I go home.

May not use physical prowess, but some IT (more the real hardware/software design) jobs make you use your noggin. Think of this, a typical brain supposedly consumes 1/5 of the food you eat....for a single organ! Plus these types probably work more hours than those in the blue collar sector, taking work home with them.
I don't push boxes around all day, and I'm still get tired after I come home. In fact I'm about to head to bed because I just got back from a 6 hour flight.

Quote: "I think 95% of people who say they wouldn't like office work would absolutely jump at the chance to work in an office."

I definately wouldn't. Overall, I enjoyed ranch work on my grandparents ranches much more than I enjoy my current job, which is basically a glorified office job.

In any case stress, whether physical like in non-office jobs, or metal stress like in office jobs that make you use your brain, will make you tired at the end of the day. Mentally tired is just as bad as physically tired.

Haha. Get back to packing products in a warehouse I end up buying with my higher salary.

Honestly, I've done unskilled jobs, and just recently got into a job where you use a computer and sit in a cubicle. I can tell you that anyone can do the latter.
