OK, now I got your attention

First off this is not a console vs console thread so only talk Wii here.

I had the chance to try some Wii at a friends house, we played Wii Sports. First off, trying to navigate menus by pointing with the remote was horrible; not only do you have to be in front of the TV where they had a table (like a lot of people do) but it's so shaky, couldn't they have done something to smooth out the targeting?

Now on to the game. Wii Sports doesn't use the targeting system, only the motion sensors. Both the tennis and boxing games were horrible to play, nothing natural about it. Especially the boxing was impossible to figure out exactly how to pull off all the moves. Bowling was a far better experience but then you used the buttons most of the time. The downside of the bowling was that it took a lot of time to adjust the bowler each time and not everybody can grasp the not so natural way of doing so.

Then we played some Guitar Hero 3 and I must say that the guitar was extremely crappy. The fret buttons where so hard to press in that it was very difficult to pull off HOPOs, they were also very loud. I've tried pretty much every guitar on both PS2 and 360 so I speak with a lot of experience when I say it's the worst guitar of them all. The horrible shape of the Explorer makes it annoying to play but the Wii LP fret buttons exceeds that. It's also quite annoying to put in and pull out the remote from the back of the guitar but I could live with that.

personally i don't see what the fuss is over the wii, whenever ive got a go on one its been pretty disappointing and boring once the novelty wears off.

all the motion sensing i need is flicking my controller back to reload in GTA, its become totally natural now.
the bowling in GTA is better than wii sports!

nintendo just make mini-games now lol
anyone watch the Kevin Bishop show?
"Kebab Shop Seller Man" and "Male Prostitute" look like good games lol

It is far better to complete a 10 line program than to start a 10,000 line program.

I agree that 95% of the games on Wii are shovelware crap--- one look at Metacritic will tell you that.

However, the "shaky cursor" you experience is not typical. I have worked on dozens of Wii dev kits and I have a Wii at home and have never had a shaky cursor. Perhaps you were just shaky? Or if the batteries were low I can maybe see that being an issue.

But yes, the Wii has a few gem games that make up about 5% of its library. The rest of the games are just evil.

The thing about the motion controls is the developers can't get the current position of the player's Wii-mote. They can *only* read differences in velocity along the X, Y, and Z axis. This makes it incredibly challenging to do a boxing game or a sword fighting game. That being said, if you combine the direction with using the IR reader, you can get a general direction of the Wii-mote. It's far from perfect, but you get the idea.

@Jeku
do you mean calibrate the start position of the controller then any movement is recorded to keep track of where it is?
Would that work?
I'm thinking of it like Mousemove() in db

It is far better to complete a 10 line program than to start a 10,000 line program.

I like the Wii to be honest.
Yes I rarley play on it but when I do I like it. Also some games are not bad.
Bowling (Wii Sports) is actually quite fun
Also
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games is good

My sister got Sonic and the secret rings which on party mode is fun

But I had never owned a console before that!
What I like doing is connecting the Wiimote to my PC!

That 'statistic' of 90% of the games being crap... Is this not true for ALL consoles/PCs?!

Bear in mind that the Wii is about 18 months old now... Saying that, the PS3 is slightly older, in fact. However it has less software available for it (AFAIK) as its harder to write software to work on 6 CPU's compared to on an older PPC-like chip...

Personally, I think you should take the Wii as it comes - a fun and cheap little gaming system where ANYONE can play the games... You're MUM can play it (I know mine can). How many games are there for the PS3 or XBox which are 'family compatible'?

Point taken.......

I have a Wii and a 360, and although I spend most of my time cuddling up to the Orange box on my 360, I still sometimes have a big family tournament on Wii Sports Tennis, and it's fun. Despite the messy controls and the fact all you have to do is flick your arm to hit, which is nothing like real tennis, we have fun.

When you buy a 360, you want Xbox Live, chats on it's MSN and a wealth of pretty good games, when you buy a PS3, you want cutting-edge graphics and games, but aren't all that fussed if they're slow in releasing PS3 only games, but you buy a Wii to have fun, get a bunch of mates together, get some drinks, and try not to smash your ceiling light when you take a swing in Wii Tennis or something....

Coffee Grunt - you've got it. Its about your target demographic. Wii = Family Fun and, as you say, the others are for gamers or those who want uber graphics.

The Wii comes into its own after a few drinks

I enjoy playing on the Wii to be frank - not a huge number of good games as Jeku rightly put, but Nicolas is also right, I went down Cambridge yesterday to do some shopping on my birthday and I found very few games interested me - they were either something I already owned or something too high of a spec for my computer. They probably took up about 5-10% of the games in all of the computer game stores I went into. I was tempted by Resi Evil 4 as I haven't bought it yet, but I've played most of the others and didn't see the point.

I think Jeku's figure is probably becoming true about the gaming industry in general.

On the Wii, the wii-mote is a bit of a novelty - I just see it like the old arcarde controls, except it's a bit more advanced in the point that it can emulate more than 1 thing due to its technology - it may not be special, but it's a selling point that can be good to use. Plus it's a way of gaming that can help people lose weight (I'm sure people have heard the story of the guy who lost 6 stone).

I think as far as simulating things like tennis rackets and all of that, the Wii doesn't do a bad job - the aiming is difficult at first, but playing with it I did find myself swinging the wii mote like a tennis racket, baseball bat or moving it in a similar motion to a bowling ball - so the illusion is there. Of course it's not for everyone and is really a machine for casual gamers.

Odd, I'm perfect with it. Were you playing on a really tiny tv, or do you just have shaky hands?

Boxing isn't that great, but tennis was sweet once I got the hand of it. It's all in the wrist!

GH3... Well, I didn't play it on the wii so I can't argue.

Digital Awakening, you do realise that you can use the D-Pad buttons to navigate menus, that's what I use, as I also find that it's a bit shaky, (that's probably me though).....

I think the only Wii game that truly uses the Wiimote and chums to their full ability is WiiSports, other games sort of throw it in their, kinda like those random button combos that you got in old games, that only get used one time, and had pretty much othing to add to gameplay or the story...

I'm not sure if it's me who is shaky or if the bateries where bad or they had configured the sensing bar badly, it's not a solid experience. Using and setting up the remote seems to require some geek skills which I think doesn't go with their family friendly approach. And yeah, I know you can use the D-pad to navigate, that's what we used. I also think they made a poor job with the Wii Sports controlls.

I'm looking forward to see what they can come up with the new EyeToy. The problem with the old one was the horrible recognition system. You should be able to pack some toys (like a sword and a shield) with games that the camera can track propperly, that would be somuch fun.

If you want a workout when playing then try a dance game, gets you sweating in minutes.

The pointer is shaky. It is also confused by any open windows anywhere in the room, power LEDs and desk lights. My desk is fake pine, and is reflective of IR so the Wiimote sees twice as many dots as it should. If my screen gets hot, it mixes that up with the sensor bar. It quite often thinks that the controller is upside down, too, when it's not. Whose stupid idea was it to use two IR lights? Why not sonar like the power glove which I would imagine is far more effective? You could get an absolute 3D position with 4x sonar speakers!

Also, I don't think that developers are experimenting with the controller enough to get the games spot on. I spent ages getting my wheel script spot on (with multiple turns, etc) and it works like a dream. Just enough smoothing to reduce shake, not enough to cause lag. Most Wii games are one extreme or the other. Many lag too much.

Hehe, well I'd probably rather do that, especially as I've really let my fitness going in the last couple of years - plus real bowling and tennis is more fun, but my point was that the Wii-mote is a good thing and is capable of emulating certain movements (Not with 100% accuracy though) regardless Wii sports can still provide a bit of fun in the comfort of your own home.

I loooove me Wii. Sure, most of the games are crap, but the ones the aren't are really good IMHO. I mean you've got Super Smash Bros Brawl, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Bloom Blox, and several others, plus there are a ton of great games coming out for the Wii like Animal Crossing Wii and the new Dragonquest game.

EDIT: Oh yeah, about the shaky cursor, I've never experienced that unless I was like way to the left or right of the TV.

90% of statistics are completely inaccurate.

No, just go to Metacritic, click Wii and see all the games that are red scored (below 50). There are more on Wii than 360, which is a year older.

Developers are guilty of doing bad quality ports from PS2 to Wii--- it's a fact. Shovelware like Jenga Wii and Balls of Fury is tarnishing the platform. Go to any games website and you'll see the same kinds of reactions.

Myself, I have all 3 "new" systems and I'll turn on the Wii specifically for Wii-ware, virtual console, and some of the Nintendo first-party games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid. If there's a game that appears on all 3 systems, there's no way in hell I'll get it on Wii (I'm looking at you, Guitar Hero 3 in mono sound )

Also, the Wii has a measly 512 megs of internal memory. With the Wii-ware games coming out I've already had to erase some of the channels because I'm running out of room. Here's hoping that at E3 Nintendo announces some kind of hard drive attachment.

Alter the sensitivity on the Wii menu, and it will show you which IR sources it is picking up (so you can adjust it accordingly)

The only problem I've had with my Wii is that they have barely any NES/SNES/N64 games for download. And the lack of money to buy Zelda and a few other games.

I love my Wii. It's awesome. I don't really like Wii Sports. I think it's fine for a demo game. But to judge the Wii off Wii Sports is just lame lame lame.

Mario Galaxies: one of the best games ever. It's a LOT of fun, and very well done.
Paper Mario: I love it, it's a lot of fun. I could do without the stupid story line, and a few of the RPG style stuff in it. But I live.
Boom Blox: haven't played, but I want to. I've only heard great things about it.

There's so many good games. There's a lot of potential for that system. It's just up to the developers to stop putting out that crud previously mentioned.

But I did not experience any of the other problems you mentioned.

At which point it thinks the power LEDs on my screen and speakers are the sensor bar because they give out more IR being no name brand cheap junk.

I just got the Wii last week for a gift, and I like it a lot. Sure it has a lot of crap games out there, but there are a few really good games too.

The Wii to me is more of a party console than a serious gaming console. I think the ability to enjoy most of the games on the Wii comes hand in hand with how well you can laugh and have a good time with friends. Super Smash Bros Brawl is out of this world for things like that! Mario Kart as well. From playing those two games already, I can tell you that I enjoy those controls a lot more than I did the N64's. The joystick on those controls failed me many a time.

You have to give Nintendo some credit too. They are going out on a limb with this one, pushing the boundaries you could say. It takes a few years to perfect a technology, and I think they are doing mighty fine with where they are at now. It's the most fun I've had with a console in years, probably since the days I duked it out with my friends playing the original super smash brothers.

I HATE when people judge the console just off wii sports. TBH I just purchased a new XBOX 360 for GTA4-only, and honestly, super mario galaxy is a better game.

Agreed, perhaps some people are too busy playing with toy guitars to try out different games.

I haven't played many games on the Wii, but I really like Mario Kart even if it is based on a certain amount of luck. The wheel's quite hard to use, but using the wiimote & nunchuck feels more comfortable than a single rigid control.

You think the Wii sucks? Then you have a lot to learn.
If you go over to a friend's house, having never played a Wii before, and you're saying it's bad by judging on two games that you're just not good at? The Wii does not suck, the point-on-the-button menu screens are quite easy to navigate (you can use the D-Pad if you're really frustrated), and the pointer might be shaky because the batteries are low. I have Guitar Hero myself, and I do not have any difficulty in pressing the fret buttons. It may be true, that about 95% of the Wii games are total crap, however, that 5% are the Mario games that got phenomenal scores on IGN, considering that those reviewers are VERY tough. And if you're favoring PS3 or Xbox 360 over the Wii, then why are you complaining that the buttons are being used too much? Seriously, if you're going to do any constructive criticism, at least make sure that it makes sense.
Quote: "he wheel's quite hard to use"

Just like in Guitar Hero, I don't have any difficulty in using the wheel. Maybe you're covering the top of the Wii remote as you steer?

Agreed as well.

No, but then this wouldn't affect it anyway.

It's hard to use because when you play like I do (constantly powersliding and changing direction a lot) you need to be able to change from left to right and vice versa fast, and this is harder with the wheel.

Um, it's not pressing the buttons that's the problem. Come back when you can play on Expert and you have actually played any of the other guitars (preferably one of the SGs).

The Wii is definitely different. It is not a PS3 or XBox 360. It was not designed to be those high priced systems equals. We all know that. It is not focused at hard core gamers, which I would assume would encompass almost everyone here, but to be an easy to access system for the whole family.
I needed a console that my wife could also play if she wanted to. She struggles with button pushing because of a combination of conditions. So the Wii was the right fit for us. That and I really wanted one. I bought her a DS for Christmas when I could not get A Wii. That is the type of system she loves because of the easy to manipulate controls for games such as animal crossing and Diner Dash, but will not play a game where she must use the buttons.
As for the Wii; to bad the games have not come out to complement the Wii in decent numbers. Of course when I looked at the PS3 and XBox 360 games last time for titles that would make me spend that much money. I don't find enough hook me games to say "I got to have that."
Its all subjective of course, and I know that others see them as Triple A title loaded. I don't.

Pros
* Unique and easy control for non gamers.
* Priced right for people with tighter budgets (if you can find one)
* Bargin titles are affordable.
* Comes with Wii sports when most game consoles come without any game. What was the last console to ship with a game included that was not built into the system?

Cons
* Good games that make the most of the system are slow to come out.
* Expensive add on peripherals seem to be the norm. GH3 Was $90 and Wii fit looks to be about the same.
* Most bargain titles are horrendous, so you have to shop carefully.
* Most true gamers are turned off by the systems lack of cutting edge design. (memory, graphics, storage)
* I need more room to play multiplayer games, because I keep hitting people. (oops)

Making nothing for the forth straight year; or is it five years now?

Guitar Hero 3 on Wii? How are you enjoying your downloadable content? Oh wait, there is none. How about the great downloadable content for Rock Band? Hmmmm none either.

Well clearly you don't like the Wii. It's not about downlodable content. So you are enjoying it? Good as it costs £35 for Xbox Live Gold (The price of another game) to get it.

Clearly you don't understand how Xbox Live works. You don't need to get a paid Gold account to download any downloadable content.

No but it's dirt cheap.

I really don't give a crud about downloadable content, just online play which the Wii is currently behind in. It would be a much better system to get if they wouldn't churn out these specialty games like Wii Fit. I don't care how innovative a mat is, I want something thats fun to play, like Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy! It seems like few people care about adventure games these days .

I have a wii and love it's simple games that my sisters 6 year old can play (and mostly she wins). I like that you can download old games which I use it for. I'm going though that I remember that from my childhood stage.

The wii remote problems are cause by low power or that you set the sensor bar to under your screen when its above.

Yes the wii is more aimed at families and parties. Its alot of fun playing house of the dead 2 or rayman rabbits at a party.

@Jeku
Have they sorted the three rings of dead out in the Xboxes yet? Now that HD dvd is a dieing format has the value dropped a bit?

I'll add something later on.

Not sure--- I've already had mine sent in 3 times

The unit's value hasn't dropped, because it doesn't natively play HD DVDs. The HD DVD player was an add-on, so the 360 itself is unaffected when Blu-Ray won the format war.

I'm not an idiot. I have it above the screen and set to above. None of the sensitivity settings are without their faults.

Maybe I'm missing something...
Do you have to have downloadable content to have fun? Clearly I'm showing my age... I remember the days when you could have fun when you could comfortable fit a game on a floppy disk and have space for save games on the SAME disk... screw that, you could fit a game on a cassette tape!

Dont get me wrong - I do understand how playing online can be fun, but it is NOT the be all and end all of gaming! I personally still have fun playing board games!

Why cant people take the Wii for what it is?! Nobody here is criticizing Monopoly (the board version) for not being a MMORPG and nobody is mocking any other great games which are still enjoyed by thousands for not having the option to download new maps (etc)...

The Wii is appreciated and enjoyed by a demographic separate to the XBox/PS3, etc. As soon as the Wii-people start targeting the XBox/PS3 demographic then they will lose the people who are buying it and playing it because they dont want to button mash or play online with people who haven't seen daylight in weeks.

Its purely a business model.

Its probably the same reason that I enjoyed Half Life 1 more than Half Life 2 that I feel motivated to argue this point. The game industry has forgotten how to make fun games. The Wii-concept has taken a step closer to making fun games. Whats a fun game? Personally - I think its a game that anybody can pick-up-and-play (hence Monopoly and other classic games lasting dozens of years).

So - does the Wii suck? Only if you look at it from an XBox/PS3 perspective. Just like a (modern) Skoda sucks if you look at it from a Jaguar perspective... But you don't see many cab drivers using Jags... (point being 'fit for purpose' for those who don't get metaphores ).

wii games are fun, and the ones that I've played so far are not exactly that bad graphics wise, I found that when games take full advantage of the system the graphics can be very pleasant. Resident evil 4 for example was in my opinion graphically good enough.

Hell I thought it was better than some xbox360 and ps3 games because they don't abuse shaders imo, especially bloom Some ps2 games still look fantastic, especially god of war 2, that was a work of art, I thought I was playing an xbox game for a while hehe.
